We found common ground in the Ella-Louis records, which I now know every note of. I eventually came to appreciate musical theater; she eventually learned to tolerate or shut out my music

	2:00pm adamdoesit: My Ella Fitzgerald story: a few years ago today, I went to the hospital to visit an older gent I'd worked with. He had fallen on his head, gone into seizures, and slipped into a coma. It was the first time I saw someone on a ventilator and, I hoped, the last. He'd been an Ella fan from way back, and often talked about his life through connection to her music. Remembering that it was her birthday, I pulled up WKCR on my phone, and played her for him for half an hour -- it was a live date from Germany or Sweden, I think. A few days later, he was gone. I don't know if he heard, but at least Ella, who had been a part of his life for so long, was there close to the end.

	2:14pm Stork: Marilyn was cool as hell. Stuck up for Ella, getting her a job at the El Mocambo where few black performers had performed. She agreed to sit at the front table for a week if they booked her. The place was jammed every night.Ella was actually glad to get the boost from that gig so she never had to sing a small jazz club again.

	2:00pm adamdoesit: My Ella Fitzgerald story: a few years ago today, I went to the hospital to visit an older gent I'd worked with. He had fallen on his head, gone into seizures, and slipped into a coma. It was the first time I saw someone on a ventilator and, I hoped, the last. He'd been an Ella fan from way back, and often talked about his life through connection to her music. Remembering that it was her birthday, I pulled up WKCR on my phone, and played her for him for half an hour -- it was a live date from Germany or Sweden, I think. A few days later, he was gone. I don't know if he heard, but at least Ella, who had been a part of his life for so long, was there close to the end.

She agreed to sit at the front table for a week if they booked her. The place was jammed every night.Ella was actually glad to get the boost from that gig so she never had to sing a small jazz club again.
