love the Laura Nyro love. i was working as music editor at Time Out NY in the 2000s when we (six music writers) were tasked with “come up with a list of the top 50 all-time NYC recording artists.” it was both fun and as torturous as you might imagine. cannot find it online because Time Out’s view as a company back then was that the internet was sort of a trend (and/or they couldn’t figure out how to profit off it), but when we got to No. 50 and dozens of world-shattering artists were still on the table, i was able to fight for Laura Nyro to take the last spot. She could’ve been way higher (as could many others).

conversations with our brilliant jazz writer about, say, the Velvet Underground vs Duke Ellington for the top spot, were glorious and bizarre and of course, ultimately super-meaningless...but Laura Nyro is undoubtedly one of the 50 best NYC recording artists of all time.

the Cameo/Parkway box set contains many delights and also some schlock (which I kinda like). some fabulous seeds of Gamble/Huff and a wide range of non-Philly stash - including Pete Best, early Kinks - and the Sounds Orchestral version of "Cast..."! and agreed, Bob - the Orlons made some killer sides, ditto The Dovells!

@Glistener MW, maybe it's a lost art, but I would sure love to see Andy Partridge vent his spleen at the Spotify people.

Bob: re singles: People not always the artists insisted on hearing different versions before release.
I've listened to varying Monkees and Stones mixes til they're coming out of my ears.

Fun fact, genius connection: Dave Mattacks drummed for both XTC and Nick Drake.

Bob, your coming back from “hiatus” is the best thing that’s happened in the past year. Still miss Frank O’Toole, tho’.
Thanks for the music, as always

@CalZone! - thanks for the Bobby R info. @Hughie Considine -some folks on the 'net are saying it might have been Dennis Elsas who used "Cast..." on WNEW-FM? we must get to the bottom of this!

Steveo, pretty good odds! The music of CM has really helped me get through some tough times...and my wife and I are huge fans of LN!

Hughie, that would be a sight to behold. (Or, a sound to behear?) I’m a huge fan of corporate-evisceration-through-prose, a la Todd Rundgren’s “I Hate My Frickin’ ISP”.

Dennis et al...I'm reading now that Cast Your Fate was indeed the theme of Dennis Elsas on WNEW.

Likewise, thanks for the great morning(s) Bob! Great to have you back on the schedule for these increasingly-sunny lazy Saturday mornings

Dennis Diken:

@Bob - yes indeed, '63 is one of the best years for pop music, methinks. @Hughie Considine - the reason I'm pretty sure it might have been one of the others (@Doug in JC - yeah, I just came across that too) is that I think Alison was on later ("The Night Bird") and I usually didn't catch her show. my memory has a male voice talking over "Cast..." earlier in the evening. @CalZone! - oh, ok - where did that appear?

Pagans is from Pau, France. Inspired by Alan Lomax style preservation and a response to a generation of Occitans whose mother tongue was slipping away ( though Pagans have recordings in other languages). Lots of drone folk and neo trad. Interesting political dimensions touched on in band camp article, like how far right nationalists want to co opt efforts to revive local languages. The people associated with Pagans are pretty eco left as far as I can tell.
