Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

First time I saw Bob, it was at a sportsball game at the Metrodome. They were giving him an award for helping out the unemployed iron miners from the Mesabi Range. The other time was up at the SPAC venue in Saratoga.

Gud evenins to all bobheadz out there
  9:41pm rw:

Evening! Weirdly, I was just reading about Brood X.
Avatar 9:43pm TDK60:

I've never seen Bob. I could kick myself as when I was young Bob was playing every nook and cranny in the NJ/NY area; theaters, colleges, etc. almost all the time. I blew it.
Avatar 9:45pm hillzy:

Did not know bob dylan played the *checks notes* chabad telethon, what a mensch
  9:46pm yippie:

i think it was really topical of dylan to release a song about presidential assassination in 2020
  9:46pm Rando1:

Ooh Dylan + Petty, does this mean we may get Traveling Wilburys sometime tonight?
  9:47pm Roric:

These are some bops!
Avatar 9:47pm hillzy:

@rando1 I was wondering the same re traveling wilburys
  9:47pm david:

Chabbad Telethon? When? I know you mentioned but didn’t hear
  9:48pm numbers:

@david 1986
  9:48pm david:

Saw Dylan at Woodstock Arts Center
  9:48pm Rando1:

Orbison would have been 85 last month also
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm chresti:

I saw him in Hollywood, I think late 80s-early 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm chresti:

Love Outlaw Blues.
  9:52pm yippie:

i still never hang a picture frame
Avatar 9:52pm TDK60:

Me too Chresti. I still use the "Australian mountain range" line when I'm at a dull party or function.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Barney Grubbs:

saw him once at the Greek Theatre in hollywood with the Pogues (who I really wanted to see, but showed up MacGowan-less) in fall 1989. I don’t remember too well, but I recall a few interesting versions of old tunes (and being uncertain about GE Smith, who I only knew from his hammy saturday night live gig)
  9:59pm Rando1:

Yeah funny I also only really knew of GE Smith as the "SNL Guy" for a good while before learning he was part of the prime Hall & Oates era
Avatar 10:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Seen Bob a few times - fortunately never when he was 'off'. He's sure had a great band for a while now !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm chresti:

Oh that guy, GE Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm mariano:

hillzy (@9:45) -- Once while scrolling through the channels I happened upon the Chabad telethon, and of all people Fred Durst was performing. Didn't know about Dylan. Be interesting to see who all has performed there.
Avatar 10:07pm hillzy:

Yessss I was waiting for Neil 🥰🥰🥰
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm mariano:

Barney Grubbs: GE Smith and that Amish-beard bass player from the SNL band were also in Hall & Oates's band. You can see them in some of the videos, like "Maneater."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Steve from Dunwoody:

Saw him in the 80s in Louisville with a banged-up (as Jones would say) Steve Earle opening. Have seen him three times in ATL in last 20 years: at Ga Tech with a pissed-off Joni Mitchell opening, up in Gwinnett County with solo Elvis Costello opening, and at the Fabulous Fox Theater with just His Band. Guy on a darkened stage with an amazing band playing jump blues. Hoo yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm mariano:

Why was Joni Mitchell pissed off?
Avatar 10:11pm hillzy:

@mariano for real?? that’s hilarious visuals
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Steve from Dunwoody:

She gets no respect. She was lecturing the crowd between songs...not about their present-tense reaction but about accumulated circumstances. Liked her music but took a smoke break....
Avatar 10:12pm TDK60:

There's another Bob LP I didn't like at first, John Wesley Harding. Now I do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Steve from Dunwoody:

Oh this messenger is a piece!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm chresti:

  10:25pm Paula:

Top Jimmy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Steve from Dunwoody:

Jesse, your Bob-u-lating is right arm!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm mariano:

Ah, I see, SteveFD. I've never seen her live, unfortunately.
Avatar 10:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wasn't Bob in East Orange to visit the dying Woody Guthrie ?

vegetable men is a doom & gloom original! :) https://doomandgloomfromthetomb.tumblr.com/post/18386204222/soft-boys-vegetable-men-robyn-hitchcock-once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Barney Grubbs:

@mariano: Ahh! I will have to go back & take a look. I don’t think I had any idea who he was (or any idea about much else) the last time I saw the maneater video
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm chresti:

*the muppet, I thought it sounded fake when I first listened to JWH.
Swag For Life Member 10:30pm zzz:

pretty sure it is HDS and bob doing hava nagilah at the chabad telethon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm mariano:

OMG, zzz! Dylan and HD Stanton at the Chabad telethon! www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:35pm TDK60:

Rob W's last Transpacific show did Bob covers from around the world. Interesting. And Shrunken Planet did a fine segment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Steve from Dunwoody:

@mariano I think Joni must go through phases of being PO'd about her rep. She can't be that way all the time. At that time her angry objects were the young female hit-makers of the 80s who were not appropriately recognizing her trail-blazing amaze-a-tude that had benefitted all of 'em....I didn't like her lectures at the time but later reflection led me to conclude she had a point -- culturally she should loom larger.
  10:37pm Corey:

Very much digging this 80th bday celebration! Thanks for putting it together Jesse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Steve from Dunwoody:

I meant 90s -- that show at GT was maybe 1999...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Steve from Dunwoody:

Will this Alvarius B do the random lyrics of the original?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm ParUbi:

It was a solid editorial call- talking about Halliburton
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm jj.:

I'll give you a quarter to take the fuck outta Halliburton
  10:45pm Beep Boop:

Mr Show: It's The New F-C-C!!!!
  10:46pm yippie:

but alvarius b actuay censored that song himself. his original lyrics said something antijewish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Barney Grubbs:

once you mention orgone, the fcc stops listening
  10:47pm Beep Boop:

Doubt it
  10:48pm Slaboch:

This is nuts

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm jj.:

@tylerw vegetable men = a canonical doom & gloom classic then!
Avatar 10:54pm TDK60:

..yeah, Bruce L - guitar; but Les Grinage (aka Raphael) - bass.
Avatar 10:57pm TDK60:

Got to see Odetta once. Powerful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm jj.:

i wish i'd seen her! her whole dylan album is really quite ace.
Avatar 11:04pm TDK60:

JJ, I've not heard that full album!, yet..

That Dylan wrocked. I hadn't heard that before, here under my rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm chresti:

I'm enjoying this Bob thing, thanks Jesse!
  11:19pm Paula:

This Bob and Joan do Jimmy is weird.
Avatar 11:20pm TDK60:

Yes, gracias Jesse. Why not another Bob segment sometime soon? | I recall the bootleg days- mostly '70s. White cardboard LP covers with red stamped titles. There were bootleg freaks.

Appreciating these live vintage gems!

Avatar 11:28pm slugluv1313:

yes -- definitely going to listen again!
loving these selections so much, Jesse -- THANK YOU
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm WR:

Deportee is sadly still quite relevant....
Avatar 11:33pm northguineahills:

It' funny, I've listened to too many live recordings, I can almost pinpoint the date just on the type of cheering I can hear. (the type and quality of the recording helps too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Steve from Dunwoody:

I'll listen again too, but I'm not going to sleep tonight until jj stops spinning these gems -- with high fidelity to life, if not audio indices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm jj.:

@northguineahills - right there with you, the compression fingerprint is a big tip off, too.
Avatar 11:33pm northguineahills:

@WR: at least none have died in an airplane crash (that we know of).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm Steve from Dunwoody:

@DfC - No, that happens most weeks on Ken's Wednesday morning time slot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm pgalub:

Great show! Thank you!
  12:15am BobOnStatenIsland:

Barney Grubbs, that bass player was T Bone Wolk, who auditioned for Dylan, along with G.E. Smith and Chris Parker (the core SNL band at the time, 1987), and, yes, along with Smith, a longtime member of Hall & Oates backup band. T Bone, however, did not tour with Dylan, although Smith did, as well as Parker.
Dylan had no idea who they were when they auditioned for him, but, they were working well with him, which is difficult do.
I know this because I was the 5th guy in that room and informed Bob of who those musicians were when he finished my opinion of how they sounded that evening.
There's a video on YouTube of G.E. Smith talking about that night. Unfortunately, he makes a lot of stuff up, or maybe has a very bad memory, either way, he pissed me off no end.
Anyway, I convinced Bob to have them back again and give them a chance. The rest is, well, The Perpetual Tour.
I have some tapes from that night. Fun stuff.
