	11:47am headcleaner: since we're on the subject: when Brazilians say 'Tim Maia', it's usually pretty close to the IPA given on his Wikipedia entry - [tʃĩ ˈmajɐ] - so at the end you do have that strongly nasalized "eehn" sound, almost as if you were saying 'team' but without fully pronouncing the 'm'. That's the [ĩ] part. And there's usually a connecting "sh"-like sound between /t/ and /ĩ/ - it could in fact be /ʃ/ but it's usually a bit softer, more like the /ɕ/ that is today's favorite phoneme. But at the end of the day, it's a connecting sound that doesn't neatly fit into the descriptions of the primary vowels + stops that most words are defined by. And again, there's lots of speaker variance - you usually hear it but sometimes you don't (even in Tim Maia songs). Same applies to the 'ti'/'te' and 'di'/'de' throughout most of Brazilian Portuguese, btw. Which is of course not to say the DJ that Trouble got her advice from is wrong of course - just that it takes time to get used to hearing these distinctions. So by saying "Teem" rather than "Tim" at least one is moving in the right direction...

	11:47am headcleaner: since we're on the subject: when Brazilians say 'Tim Maia', it's usually pretty close to the IPA given on his Wikipedia entry - [tʃĩ ˈmajɐ] - so at the end you do have that strongly nasalized "eehn" sound, almost as if you were saying 'team' but without fully pronouncing the 'm'. That's the [ĩ] part. And there's usually a connecting "sh"-like sound between /t/ and /ĩ/ - it could in fact be /ʃ/ but it's usually a bit softer, more like the /ɕ/ that is today's favorite phoneme. But at the end of the day, it's a connecting sound that doesn't neatly fit into the descriptions of the primary vowels + stops that most words are defined by. And again, there's lots of speaker variance - you usually hear it but sometimes you don't (even in Tim Maia songs). Same applies to the 'ti'/'te' and 'di'/'de' throughout most of Brazilian Portuguese, btw. Which is of course not to say the DJ that Trouble got her advice from is wrong of course - just that it takes time to get used to hearing these distinctions. So by saying "Teem" rather than "Tim" at least one is moving in the right direction...
