Listener comments!

Jan Turkenburg:

Hi to all listeners younger and older than 64!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
chresti:

Morning Jan and over/unders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi chresti!
  10:01am
Listener Robert:

What about listeners who are exactly 64?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am
MHLee:

I wonder when it fell out of practice to induce yourself before you began the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am
Jan Turkenburg:

They are more than welcome.
  10:02am
Listener Robert:

Some bartenders are like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am
fred:

Greetings Jan and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am
chresti:

I'll be exactly 64 in August.

Morning exactlys!
  10:03am
Listener Robert:

No, I think MHLee was referring not to DJs, but to the performer on the record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
MHLee:

No that wasn't at you, lol. That was a comment on the Edison records and the old records "SUNG BY MISTER HARRY BURR"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Robert! (oh yes, of course..)
Hi MHLee! (lol)
Hi fred!
  10:05am
Listener Robert:

But the way things are going, I think some singers no longer INDUCE themselves either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am
MHLee:

oh good catch....
  10:07am
Listener Robert:

Just to amplify, a "cool", detached style of singing seems to have become popular, wherein the singer no longer gets into it emotionally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, lol! now I'm reading it right, I have been pre-occupied by technical anomalies just before the show :-)
  10:10am
Listener Robert:

Maybe that's Sinatra's influence. He got you to actually listen to the words and the sentiment in THEM, rather than saying, "Here I am, all worked up about something, pay attention to ME."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
MHLee:

Well, I wouldn't call the precursor crooners detached... Bing and Russ Columbo and even Rudy Vallee seem to be rather invested in the song.
  10:14am
Listener Robert:

Before Sinatra, you could imagine the prominent recording artists and live performers as if they were characters in an opera or musical play. Now take Sinatra and try to transpose that performance to someone playing a part; you can't. And he did act in movies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
David (in London):

Afternoon Jan and all vintage groovers.
  10:15am
Listener Robert:

Exactly, MHLee, that's the style that seems to have mostly changed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
chresti:

Afternoon from the morning David in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Jan Turkenburg:

MHLee, Robert, doesn't it also has a lot to do with the development of microphones and amplification. In the beginning of recording singers were used to be singing unamplified in such a way that people in the back of the theatre could hear them too. They also had to compete in volume with the accompanying orchestra. That changed with the introcution of the microphone. In the early years recording was done not with a microphone, but with a funnel of some sort.
  10:25am
Listener Robert:

True, I hadn't taken those developments into account. It took a while for them to adjust.
  Swag For Life Member 10:26am
WR:

hello Jan, forgot today is Thursday, will be listening but nut commenting. work work work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
chresti:

I'm looking forward to WR's nutty comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
spodiodi:

greetings, Jan!
hi, chresti \\//, Robert, MHLee, fred, David (iL), WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am
spodiodi:

haha chresti. i liked that too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am
chresti:

Hi spodi! \\//
  10:30am
Listener Robert:

It also had a lot to do with the lyrics that were presented to them. Much of the stuff that Sinatra chose to sing or was written for him was 3rd person, as opposed to more of the 1st and 2nd person lyrics others sang.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Spodiodi!
  10:32am
Listener Robert:

Come to think of it, a great deal of Beatles' originals are 3rd person lyrics, about he/she/it/they, while their early contemporaries were singing more about I/we/you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Jan Turkenburg:

Well, now I wasn't aware of that particular aspect. Thank you, Robert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, "She loves you" was revolutionary!
  10:35am
Listener Robert:

Of course, "She loves you" is partly 3rd and partly 2nd person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jan Turkenburg:

The funny thing is that in children songs there was an opposite development, which I now remember was pointed out during my training as a teacher. During the seventies songs in the 1st person became into fashion and actually never left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
Jan Turkenburg:

children were allowed to sing about themselves, or about being a kind of animal as opposed to the more moralistic school songs from the past
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
spodiodi:

old pcs ftw!
  10:45am
Listener Robert:

That's very interesting, Teacher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
spodiodi:

redundancy ftw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
chresti:

I like Chet's shirt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
chresti:

Haha spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am
Rich in Washington:

wow! That's very Kipper Kids sounding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jan Turkenburg:

Rich!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
chresti:

So, if there isn't a drop out, we'll breathe a sigh of relief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

Well, if there IS a drop out now, it will mean that my internet connection as a whole will have been cut off and not only the good ole streaming PC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
Jan Turkenburg:

Ah... that makes me remember.. I might be able to arrange a back-up for that as well...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am
Jan Turkenburg:

But the technical difficulties are also part of the fun here :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Jan Turkenburg:

But liking to solve practical problems is a Turkenburg-trade :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
spodiodi:

i can appreciate that, Jan... the two machines i use the most are from 2009(!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Lizardner Dave !:

Hi folks! Sorry I'm late to Sheena's Most Educational Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
spodiodi:

hi Dave! hi Rich in Washington!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
David (in London):

Chresti, Spod, WR, salutations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am

I think the desktop is from 2009 or 10, my laptop is from 2018 I think, my son sent it to me on Mother's day. He gave us the desktop after updating it to windows 10.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
spodiodi:

good day, Ursula1000!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
coelacanth∅:

hey spodiodi hey Ursula1000

. . . i'm confused and probably just ignorant; but why would a "black" man wear blackface?
- not black enough??
Avatar 11:27am
Ursula1000:

@coelacanth∅ I was just thinking of that too. Maybe it was something in the minstrel circuit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I've read that it was common practise in those days for black people to put on the same kind of make up as the white black faces, so they looked exactly the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
coelacanth∅:

...or maybe just a tactic to keep "white" folks from taking "black" folks too seriously
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am
coelacanth∅:

(as artists)
Avatar 11:31am
Ursula1000:

just read that Jan from your Wiki link---crazy times
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am
MHLee:

Ethnic comedy was also a big thing... over the top Yiddish accented songs were released such as "Under the Matzo Tree"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
spodiodi:

this song is funny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am
David (in London):

Oh blimey, it's our Gracie.
