All 3 versions recorded in 1940? For this song I prefer the Bowlly rendition.

@Mx. Baba Bee: I took tomorrow off work. At worse I'll binge listen to the WFMU streams, at best I'll get out for a change
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am

WR: I liked the Bowlly version best, too!

Mx. Baba Bee (e/they):

fred: great planning!
  Swag For Life Member 11:24am
WR:

Since Bowlly died from German bombing of the UK in April of '41, I thought to look up the context of Bowlly recording that serenade: "From 7 September 1940, London was systematically bombed by the Luftwaffe for 56 of the following 57 days and nights."
  11:24am
wendy del formaggio:

Hi Jan! Great show. And maybe you already announced this, but that Spike Jones was a Liberace parody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Jan Turkenburg:

WR, thanks for providing that context.
Thanks, Wendy, I didn't know, but I could have guessed :-)
  Swag For Life Member 11:26am
WR:

Ah, Wendy, I didn't catch that about being a riff on Liberace, but of course.
  11:28am
wendy del formaggio:

You’re welcome. It’s kind of a sweet and silly homage. But we should expect no less from Mr. Jones and company. :-)
  Swag For Life Member 11:32am
WR:

"Maying" in 1902? Yes, first they let allowed waltzing, then the tango, what next? Jitterbugging?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Jan Turkenburg:

Jimmy Messene was of Greek descent himself, btw

I didn’t know how much I needed to hear Yma Sumac until you started playing this song. Thank you, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am
Jan Turkenburg:

:-)

David in London:

Bowlly played his last ever live show in my home town of High Wycombe, on the edge of London. As it was late, they tried to get him to stay over, but he decided to head back to town, and died in the air raid that night. Tragic. I always think of him when I pass the spot of the former Rex Theatre.
  11:40am
David in London:

Yma Sumac was truly amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Jan Turkenburg:

Wow, talking of placing things in context... thanks David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
MHLee:

I can't imagine being outside in an air raid.
  11:45am
David in London:

MHLee, my dad, as a kid, was evacuated from London during The Blitz. He told me once that he got off the train in Hertfordshire, about 35 miles away, and the skyline was orange from all the fire. He said he burst into tears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
Jan Turkenburg:

I probably would have too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am
Jan Turkenburg:

It must have looked like the apocalypse...
  Swag For Life Member 11:51am
WR:

When you mentioned you were going to play N blues I looked it up, had known about the song but didn't look it up before. A song that hits many of the cross roads of minstrel and all points forward of white cultural appropriation from black culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am
fred:

I don't remember hearing this Brel song before
