@The Oscar: " In the same year, two new optical disc storage formats were being developed. One was the Multimedia Compact Disc (MMCD), backed by Philips and Sony (developers of the CD and CD-i), and the other was the Super Density (SD) disc, supported by Toshiba, Time Warner, Matsushita Electric, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Thomson, and JVC. By the time of the press launches for both formats in January 1995, the MMCD nomenclature had been dropped, and Philips and Sony were referring to their format as Digital Video Disc (DVD).[14][15] The Super Density logo would later be reused in Secure Digital."

Ok, so that whole "turn the heat on" thing was for cars that were prone to overheating (back in the 70s). The hyopthesis was that you could help keep the engine cooler by running the interior heat, which would blow cooler air over the heater core.

@chresti, so the question would be: is it worse to fight your way out of L.A. traffic on the way to SF, or to fight your way through CT and Boston-area traffic on the way to Maine? Probably a tough call.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Handy Haversack:

Hmm, βrian, I got nothing, er, handy, but I'd just say to balance if possible: some sour (lemon? lime? dry vermouth?), some bitter if you have it (Campari, Suze?), and maybe some soda since peach juice is pretty viscous? Sounds like a nice thing to have in a Collins glass. 2 oz. rum, 1 oz. peach, .5 oz. lime, .5 oz Campari, ice, top with soda?

I actually prefer taking 99 over I-5. Much of it is 3 lanes so it is easier to pass all the trucks. But you go through cities so you risk getting stuck in traffic in somewhere like Fresno.

@Handy, I'm going to NH soon but will probably take the Merritt to I-91 instead. Going via the Taconic seems like it would add too much mileage, no? The Taconic *is* beautiful though, and there's so much less traffic. Plus good 90.1 reception last time I was there!

Can you imagine, ChukAmok? Rail to DC from NYC is a total joke, and I assume that obtains all they way north and east as well.

Regarding high speed rail, the central valley part is easy since it is all flat. The problem is trying to build it over the mountains at either end to LA and the Bay Area.

This sounds like 2000s dreamy indie pop vibes but more dream.

Thanks @C, I might take a look at that since I'm going to the NH/ME borderlands! How's the breakfast curry in Thailand? Are there still toothless old ladies making great papaya salad with tiny little shrimp using a mortar and pestle out on the sidewalks?

C in Thailand:

@I k e, food in Thailand is still good! Still the papaya salad vendors, although very few are the old toothless ladies anymore. At least in my area. Maybe in the busier areas of Bangkok and larger outdoor markets!
