@fred - it's more a matter of willpower than nerve (language learning), I think - a willingness to stay the course, and do a lot of boring intellectual legwork with the knowledge that the dividends will come much, much later (and indeed they will). Lucy writes such beautiful songs. I love this tune! She did a nice session for Jeffrey Davison early in her career. (I engineered) BTW, she pronounces her name “DAY-cuss”

chresti @210 i had a friend who was chronically and sometimes acutely upset that she was, or imagined herself to be cast an outsider. she was a make-up artist in the model industry so surrounded herself with the beautiful illusion, and she *was* different; but attractive in a different way.
i tried but failed to get her to revel in her weird. couldn't convince her that reveling in one's weirdness, if that's what it's to be called, is the only way i survived.

Hi, Stork. A few years ago someone gave me a copy of Grisham's "The Broker", in which the title character has to learn Italian. As the book goes on with his lessons and experience, more and more of it is in Italian, so halfway thru I figured, "Aha! It's going to end up all Italian, with Grisham counting on the reader's learning it along with the character." But no. Would've been an interesting gimmick.

What a great concept, Listerner Robert! If the target language were German, I would love to read something like that!

@Stork: It's complicated. French is my native language, but English feels way more natural by now. I can't read a book in French, and subscribe to American literary journals.

Questo significa che, nella maggior parte dei casi, il sistema esercita un controllo maggiore ed un gran potere sugli individui, maggiore di quello che lo stesso individuo esercita su sé stesso. - This means that, in most cases, the system exercises greater control and great power over individuals, greater than that which the individual exercises over himself.

I can't write in French by now either, even in my private diary. English only. I dream in that language. French is legal/bureaucracy language to me by now, which is scary
