Favoriting July 18, 2021: Mthutuzeli Dudu Pukwana
A celebration of the life of Dudu Pukswana and the many musical forms he took. From bop and kwela to rock and elsewhere - a member of the racially integrated South African jazz band The Blue Notes - when such a thing was illegal, he went on to play in Blue Note pianist Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, formed his own bands (most notably Assagai, Spear and Zila), and recorded with ensembles combining the finest musicians in South Africa with the greatest and most adventuresome British musicians in the 60's through the 80's. He lived to perform at Nelson Mandela's tribute concert at Wembley Stadium in 1990. Heroic music to shake the Stork Club dance floor.

I mean, sure, a nice murky plotline by le Carré where nothing and no-one can be trusted in the fog of cold war is a thing of beauty; but permanent immersion in that fog is claustrophobic and crazymaking. It's also nice to enjoy a lovely space Western / fable. The first, original (chronological by release) Star Wars is a lovely thing, although you may have missed a lot by not seeing it as a kid when it came out.

Star Wars is very OK. Even very good. It’s just a fun, well-made pastiche of old serial adventures. But not better than, say, one of the best episodes of, let’s say Farscape, or Buffy, or whatever. I also think 2001 is overrated though, so take me w/a salt lick.

Stork:

Yeah, I know apples and passionfruit. COme to think of it, Alec Guiness is probably the only thing I'd like if I saw Star Wars (which would be at gunpoint).

Jeff Moore:

Yeah, @fred – I think the first two (4, 5) are the essential ones for enjoying the fable with a youthful openness of spirit and, yes, just being part of society with some shared cultural references.

Then there were some terrible ones and some awkwardly dorky cute-critter panderings.

I can watch Dr.Who & Stuporheroes 24/7 tho' - so I'm not some junk-free weirdo or anything I swear...

@Ike: I would never take you seriously, and anyway I'm totally ignorant when it comes to film

Blue Notes For Mongezi: this is so so beautiful.

Jeff, I dunno. I feel that our friends who haven't seen a lick of Star Wars are like members of elusive jungle tribes, or the holdouts who continue without cell phones. We should treasure and protect their innocence, if only for anthropological reasons.

@adamdoesit: your point does have a certain resonance.

So I'm a zoo exhibit now? Just to be clear I'm totally cool with that. Just keep throwing me fish.

Herring is believing, Stork.
Anyway, I'm sure I've heard Dudu before, but, never having listened to him knowingly, I find myself (not for the first time at the barkeep's place here) newly in love. If only he'd got to play with Dodo Marmarosa and Didi Bridgewater…

@adamdoesit: I don't have a cell phone. No high claim behind that. It's just expensive with no benefit to me. I may have to get one to prove I'm vaccinated. Not happy about it, but I guess I'll have to pay our overlords

I watched Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' ('72) recently. Russan sci-fi, so naturally heavy. hee..I dug it.

fred, keep on keeping on! If it's just the proof of vax app you need, maybe you can pick up an old one without a service plan, and download the chit over wifi.

TDK60, love that movie. Every now and again, I'll find myself in a corridor or endless onramp that puts me right back inside it.

I think the Brezhnevian secret thought cops didn't like it. Shades of spirituality in it. I see Cronenberg also did a Solaris, not seen it yet..

Thank you thank you and a thousand more like that...

It is with a heavy heart that I take my leave for so freakin long. September 5 is gonna be a great day - if only for me. Take care, be fun and have well - or something. Mwahs!!!!!

BTW, thanks so much for this show, Storque!

I've been a (completely un-knowledgeable) fan of Dudu P ever since I let our streamfather Doug loose to control the stereo when there was a conclave of Drummers at our house for dinner, and then I chased down some of the people he'd played... and I bought the few really readily available recordings with Pukwana's name on the band, but I wasn't aware of all the other groups he was in.

Like... I'm pretty sure that in my most recent show I played at least one Dudu Pukwana album and two Chris McGregor ones, without actually having a clue that DP was probably a tentpole member of the band in the latter records.

Always educational, this saloon.

Oh yeah @RRN63, I’d just as soon rewatch Dr. Who’s “Caves of Androzani” from 1984 or “The Empty Child” from 2005 as watch Star Wars.

@adamdoesit: your haughty demeanor isn't helping. I'm not adverse to tech, I just need to see what it does for me (I'm a software dev, so gimme a break calling me an ignorant idiot). I don't want a phone because it's useless to me. I may have to get one. If I do I'll probably get one that can stream WFMU.
