I didn’t know that was a film. Love the Weismann docs tho

Yeah, "In Jackson Heights." It came out in 2015 I think. A nice four hour tour through the neighborhood, if I remember correctly. I am sure there's a bureaucratic angle to it too. It's on my list.

hi all. have been listening. the building where the club the Dolphy performance was from is 8 short blocks from me, I'm on 74th. somehow that has more resonance for me than the famous Manhattan clubs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome, WR! I wonder what's at that address nowadays. I do love the thought of the Dolphy Quintet working a club gig in Queens in 1962.

gotta check in for the seltzer talk lol. la croix pamplemousse
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:58pm

Hi! I’ve been going the other way, switching from flavored store-bought seltzer to plain Sodastream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Sam Segal:

Hello, ZZZ! La Croix Pamplemousse was my main gateway into seltzer several years ago. And then somehow the flavors dropped out completely. Glad to be slowly reintegrating the flavor after all these years.

Some seltzer brands seem to have much better flavors than others. I like Poland Spring’s flavors a lot, but OTOH IIRC they are owned by some super evil corporation, so….
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Sam Segal:

Howdy, Ike! I should look into the Sodastream. Does that one require you to buy those CO2 cartridges?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Sam Segal:

I am drinking a Polar Black Cherry. Great flavor.

was with my young child in the museum of the city of ny over the weekend and in one of the historical exhibits they had one of the old style seltzer dispensers with the handle and had a good time explaining to her what that is, and that growing up we had those delivered to our house as late as the esrly/mid 90s! i’d do anything to get those again nowadays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

My main association with the old school soda bottles is the image of a clown using one as a prop.

Coel and RW! You're just in time for seltzer talk.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

haha yes. but truly the best seltzer you will ever have, if you can find it. going to look right now actually to see if it exists anymore.

In old movies, so much shpritzing in the face, at the bar and in the home, and at events and dinners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Sam Segal:

Those were the days, SBP. Enough bubbly water flowing, you could sphritz anybody and anything!

All this music and seltzer talk too?! Crazy.

so it’s called a soda siphon and there is a brooklyn based delivery service omg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
Sam Segal:

What's the delivery service called?

Ike, nestle (poland spring) is attempting right now, if they haven't already accomplished it, to buy yet another public water source - this one out west

...i'll drink shitty tap water before i'll drink nestle bottled water (which is the majority of bottle water in the stores)

Hi-been listening in the car, enjoying the show.
Never hada taste for seltzer, flavored or plain. The exception is plain seltzer from a shpritz bottle flavored with strawberry syrup (used to get this delivered when I was a kid in Brooklyn), or a well proportioned chocolate egg cream (it's so rare these days to get it properly proportioned). (Second Avenue Deli gives a small glass of it at the and of dinner, they get it right).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
zzz:

brooklyn seltzer boys. but looks like you can find for sale the siphon bottle and little co2 cartridges to make your own a la sodastream. gonna be shpritzing anew over in no time
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
I k e:

@Sam@11:00, yes. There is a cavernous, soulless chain store near me, Bed Bath & Blecccccch, that sells the CO2, or you can have it delivered. I think it’s the best-tasting plain seltzer I’ve ever had. The problem is that all the little flavor add-on thingies are terrible. But your idea of adding AC vinegar is a good one. Also TJoe’s now has raspberry vinegar — I’m going to try adding that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Sam Segal:

Welcome, Doc! I love the complimentary egg cream at Second Avenue Deli. I need to get back there ASAP. Used to go there too much when I worked in the area.

never knew 2nd ave deli have a complimentary egg cream. used to sit at the bar at eisenberg’s in flatiron with same seltzer-loving young child and get egg creams, sadly still not sure if they are coming back after covid shut down. egg creams with sodastream just don’t cut it
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:21pm

@coel, yeah, I’ve been trying to avoid Nestle products. The one Sam mentioned, Polar (not to be confused with Poland Spring), is a solid choice, and not owned by any giant corp. Plus they have a wide variety of flavors, though some are hard to find. Not all flavors are great, but they’re at least decent:

Thanks Ike. my sister buys that i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm

@Ike, good tip on the raspberry vinegar. Going to have to expand my vinegar pallet, now that I'm an ACV man.

As of March, Nestle "has completed the $4.3 billion sale of its bottled-water brands in North America, including Poland Spring, to a pair of private-equity firms."
So drink all the deliciousness and slake the thirst-for-return of worthy investors.
Poland Spring extracts over 900 million gallons of Maine groundwater a year. Doooon't worry about it, they say.

ryley walker is releasing lots of great stuff on husky pants
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

I like that having his own label allows him to do more of these low-key experimental releases. The pairing with David Grubbs makes a lot of sense.

speaking of museum of city of NY, in their New York New Music exhibit I was just at they had a program on display from premier of vermont counterpoint in ‘82 at BAM i think incredible series with glenn branca, laurie anderson, max roach and other also
