Hello Jan, the theory is that I will be listening while working an a report. The theory.

Hi WR!
Hi MHLee!

Just a quick pop-in between meetings to say, 'Hi Jan and assembled vintage groovers'.

Hi David!

Hi Jan and over/unders!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
MHLee:

A little bit off-topic for this show, but I acquired a three-CD comp of Nederfolk music that I'm looking forward to listening too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Jan Turkenburg:

Nederfolk? you are making me curious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am
chresti:

So this is where taking the high road and the low road is from, I often sing that part without having any idea where I got it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am
chresti:

Yo yo David.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am
chresti:

You escaped the flooding last week Jan and David iL, I hope?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am
Lizardner Dave !:

I think the twist in Loch Lomond is that the singer is already dead, therefore taking the "low road" and it's also why they'll never meet again by the lake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
MHLee:

@Dave I think you're right there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
Jan Turkenburg:

aha, thanks for that insight Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
chresti:

Glad you were safe, Jan.
Dave, now I like it even better,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Jan Turkenburg:

@MHLee, thanks for the link, I see a few familiar names but also a lot that I don't know. I'm not very deep into the folk scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
David (in London):

Chresti, yes thankfully. And now we're back into a heatwave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
MHLee:

The oddest arrangement I have found is one by a Larry Lewis on an album called African By-pass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am
MHLee:

@Jan I've been trying to get much deeper in the English and American experimental folk of the 60s and just happened to find that one as a diversion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
chresti:

Hope you can stay cool, David in London.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am

It's in the 90s here, too warm for me, especially when the overnight temps don't cool things down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am
MHLee:

Actually quite chill here. It's 70 now but when I left for work it was only 59.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am

59 is perfect.

hello Jan and listeners!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am

Had to look it up, because I was almost sure I had read this song is about the Jacobites. Bonnie Prince Charles being the claimant. Sure enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Ursula1000!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am

Henry Thomas with the quills... his song Bulldoze Blues was copied exactly to form Goin' Up Country by Canned Heat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jan Turkenburg:

yes, I came across that during preparation of this show :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
WR:

I've read the Wikipedia entry for the Loch Lomond song. Can't spend the time now to follow all the internet available info, but interesting that it has specific political history in it's development which gives is extra nationalistic twist beyond nostalgia for ye oulde country.

en.wikipedia.org...

traditioninaction.org...

And after reading the Wikipedia entry, I am wondering if you have included Maxine Sullivan's 1937 recording with the Anglo Claude Thornhill pianist/arranger and a stellar band of African American musicians accompanying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
Jan Turkenburg:

in just a minute, WR ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Jan Turkenburg:

I also didn't have time to investigate the origins of the song today, so I'm happy with all the links you find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
MHLee:

I sang a Jacobite song as a solo at 14. There's quite a few of them that seem to have been fostered by the Scottish people. I sang "The SKye Boat Song"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
MHLee:

Which I think I've actually mentioned before here looking back on it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I think you did, MHLee :-)

sorry to hear about your computer issues... mildly related commiseration: woke up to no internet here 😐 but it's back on now, after rebooting the modem and router a couple of times. minutes later a Comcast truck (our internet provider) rolled by (they were out yesterday too, and the internet was out briefly, and i had to reboot the modem then too.) anyway, hoping for smooth sailing the rest of the day. also that you get your stubborn machine sorted out

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am

Hi Mr Fab, no you haven't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm
WR:

My theory about working while listening turned out to be invalid very quickly. Got pulled into a support call during Hans Albers. Had to turn down the volume so low that I will be going back to hear the Maxine Sullivan, etc. Great episode. Interesting choices you made to contrast with the Loch Lomond thread. I was looking for a reason/pattern for the recordings you selected but think it was just your choices to make an interesting flow for the show. Thank you for all the care you take with this show. Laters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
WR:

Hi, listening for the Nth time. work or a google search keeps distracting me so I start over again. Many of the recordings offer entry into socio-cultural meditations.

It was quite entertaining to hear the speculation that you and your friend were were having about the reefer man.

One minor correction, Furry Lewis, two "R". Like furry haired animal. Not sure how he got that nick name. Fond memories of the couple of times I got to see him perform in the late 1970s.
