@Mister Dobalina, The awning read CBGB & OMFUG so you're right about the name of the place. But people in New York seem to add an 's to club names, even when it made no sense at all (like "Hurrah's" or "Xenon's") and many people called it CBGB's.

Thanks, Corey! It was great to meet in person and to hang out. Our best to S and Cliff, too! He left a triceratops outside, but I rescued it and put it in the windowsill. We'll see if it survives till next year.

Guess I was slightly too old for the Replacements in their hey day (though I loved a lot of their peers) and never saw them live though I was very aware of their "legacy.' I heard Warren Zanes perfectly describe the The Replacements. To paraphrase: A potentially great band that always seemed to be scared to be great. Self sabotage to the extreme. I agree 100% with that. Could a, would a, should a. Still.. they were amazing. At times.

This is not a knock, but the drumming on Instant Karma has an over the top clumsiness that I would not associate with Ringo. Almost like the Bonham feel on Rock and Roll. Does have that deadened late Beatles drum sound though.
  12:48pm
DG:

Saw the 'Mats inadvertently 2x: once opening for Keith Richards in NJ, & a few years later opening for Costello at the Garden. I realize those weren't the best ways to experience them live, & don't remember them being that great. Their records ae mixed & Zanes is right---I don't understand those who think ACTING like a "rock band" (drunk, sloppy, sometimes violent) is more important than things like, I dunno, good songwriting or being able to play. I actually liked their punk stuff better (Sorry, Ma...) since at least then there was no attempt to be a melodic rock band. But I wish their fellow Minnesotans Husker Du and the Minutemen had gotten half the attention the Replacements did back then.
