Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

Ha, ha! Too long for Discogs: When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Fight And He'll Win The Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 4:18pm Bas NL:

My niece of 16yrs is deep into Billie Eilish. Learned to play the piano to be able to play her songs. Seen her twice in concert....
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Julie:

Did you see all those grammys she got last year? Crazy!
  4:20pm Mr. Nobody:

Nice
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Rich in Bay Ridge:

Great, Bas, that your niece was inspired to play due to Billie. Whatever the road to music might be, it’s a great thing.
Avatar 🦇 4:24pm Bas NL:

The Smiths! That's more to my age!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Phillippe:

I think Grammys should be one per customer. Pick the one you want to keep and turn the others back in so someone else gets a chance. Maybe that way Taylor Swift will FINALLY get one...
Avatar 🦇 4:27pm Bas NL:

She won tickets to a concert on national radio. She was on radio and she was so over the moon. It was so much fun to hear her enthusiasm.

A legit question really.
I always have time for the Airplane
- but I couldn't tell you how all these trax are :

Handy is related to Jorma I believe !

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Airplane's albums from 1966-72 is not too formidably long a list :
en.wikipedia.org...
...I kind of take it for granted - as my older brother had these & their cover art around in my first years of life... but I'm less fluent here than I wanna believe...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Julie:

who wants to come load my dishwasher? That's gonna be a tricky one with this back tonight. UGH
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Julie:

It was really the records in the FMU library that got me exploring beyond the records I had (Bless his pointed, Crown of Creation & Worst of). There's also Volunteers not a huge known one, but we have the sleeve hanging on the volunteer room door (or did)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Time to switch to paper plates for a while?
Avatar 5:36pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

As a dumb 8-year-old I couldn't quite work it out how on earth a US band has a guitarist with a Finnish name (Jorma Kaukonen). I mean, it was understandable but very rare. Plus back then, I had not even heard Jefferson Airplane, but Hot Tuna of all things (Yellow Fever was in the local library, I actually bought the very same copy from them when they deleted it from their catalogue).
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Julie:

honestly most of the dishes are the birds', 12 little dishes every day and I think I have maybe 3 full sets of them.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always say - you wish you could just write a passable tune
...& Bowie wrote fucking SciFi short stories here for thuh love uv gawd...
Avatar 5:38pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@5:35 Julie: salt to my wounds - Worst Of Jefferson Airplane was my first record from them, one I never got to hear as someone borrowed it from me and purposefully never returned it.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm David (in London):

And did so whilst wearing a preposterous / brilliant 'man's dress' by Mr Fish of London. Sigh.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Julie:

booooo
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Julie:

it's really amazing we had Bowie as long as we did. He might have been a quick flash like Bolan was.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm chris in the redwoods:

Bowie was some kind of superhuman... bless him.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Aitch:

Lots of Ronson on this album
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...start with aspirins or analgesic of choice
...this ethyl alcohol is not too bad a muscle relaxant
...warm bath, dumb entertainments...
Yeah Townshend said Bowie was his Salvador Dali - which I parse as being Thee One for taking high concept stuff & making it work 101% as Rawk tunes & even Charting.
Avatar 5:40pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

This is my favorite Bowie album from the Mick Ronson era as it were.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:43pm David (in London):

I remember once reading a review of one of Bowie's Glass Spider era shows (admittedly not his, ahem, finest period), and the reviewer called him 'the dirt underneath Prince's fingernails', and I thought 'You fucking traitor. That will come back to haunt you one day.'

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm Stanley:

Too right, David. What a crass thing to say.

Same thing ! Where most of us would cling for dear life to a Band like the Spiders (Mick Ronson ?! C'mon) - for Boowie the early 70s Hard Rawk Band was just another costume change.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:45pm chris in the redwoods:

although Prince is probably another good example of superhuman. but well said, David, what nonsense.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Julie:

now Prince, he had very serious pain issues. Sigh, that's what did him in.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Prince. Anyone into Music was obliged to be on tenterhooks wondering why he would do with probly the broadest *range* of Talents as both Musician & Performer
...I still don't feel he did anything my heart considers indispensable.
With Bowie - it's more of his stuff than not...
Big Pharma killed Prince & Petty with f*cking fentanyl - when all they wanted to do was keep working !
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*what he would do...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:49pm chris in the redwoods:

the war on drugs killed Prince, most likely. the lack of access to appropriate medication... needed to buy crap off the street that was not as advertised. at least that's my limited understanding...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm Julie:

Yes, Chris, that's right. My familiarity with Prince's massive catalog is small, but Purple Rain is very special to me. I think there is a "new" release coming or just came.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Prince as Producer interested me especially - he had that understanding & got an interesting sound.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Julie:

it is very, very hard to get appropriate pain medication. This is why I mostly use (legal and illegal) weed and save what few pills I have for emergencies where I need to function mentally.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Julie:

I think there is a whole Prince produced Sheena album in the vault and I really want to hear it.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:53pm chris in the redwoods:

nobody compares 2 u is a masterpiece of song writing, in my view, and Prince never released his own version. but i can't compare Prince and Bowie. such different artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Scott67:

Sorry to hear about your back Julie. They're amazing things, when they're working properly.
✌😎🌷
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Stanley:

Most enjoyable music, Julie. Thanks.
I'm awa' to wa' bed, the noo.
Guid night all.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Julie:

oh Chris you need The Originals album, it is lovely. And yeah, very different we just lost them the same year
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Julie:

nite Stanley!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Night Stanley !
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:55pm chris in the redwoods:

big pharma is not without culpability in the horrors of the war on drugs.

night, Stanley!
Avatar 🦇 5:55pm Bas NL:

Sleep tight, Stanley!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:55pm chris in the redwoods:

thanks, Julie! will seek it out post haste.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Could swear I've hear Prince sing Nothing Compares (great writing you're right). But Sinead takes it all the way. & I like TheBangles' Monday better too...
chris - a gargantuan understatement...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Scott67:

G'night Stanley.✌😎
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Julie:

I've played some of the songs off Originals, probably Compares 2 U as well. I feel like Unwoman did it as well (of course)
Avatar 5:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

In spite of having some of his albums, I am not yet a huge fan of Prince's music. He was a genius alright, I jsut don't get it - yet. Will have to try The Originals. Thanks for the tip Julie.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm David (in London):

Right, time for me to hit the hay as well. Thanks Julie, and good night groovers.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:05pm chris in the redwoods:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 6:11pm Bas NL:

Good night David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Scott67:

Nighty night David.✌😎
Avatar 6:21pm Sylvia:

do you know pain means bread in French
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Julie:

yes! But pronounced differently. We have "Le Bon Pain" here
Avatar 6:24pm Sylvia:

right, le pain quotidien as well
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Julie:

now I want something warm and bread-y
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Julie:

when I lived in the village and my friend would visit she would bring croissant but harder to find good ones around here
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm woj:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Voice so much like my JulianCope...small world. :)
...I guess that's what chameleons do ?? :D
Avatar 6:28pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

The criminally underrated Chameleons.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah like Cope works for me...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Julie:

his biker look is NOT working for me
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:29pm woj:

the KaTemas show is queued up for tonight! was driving back from delaware last friday so just played all her records while sitting in traffic :)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Julie:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& 'hand' en Français c'est 'main'...
Yeah Cope going for I guess a solid Rawkist Individualism stance sartorially - whilst being about as intellectually & philosophically encompassing as Rawkers get...
Avatar 6:39pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Now then, this could be a 'guilty pleasure' but MAAAN I LOVE THIS SONG.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Julie:

yeah I get a little flak from WFMU folk about anything from Synchronicity but it's the only Police album I ever had
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - giving Sting a break here...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm chris in the redwoods:

this track bringing about wee teen chris' confused and frustrated angst
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

I feel about Sting like I do Morrissey, boring as hell without the band
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

and heck he was in Quadrophenia
Avatar 6:42pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:40 Julie: flak fromWFMU for playing Synchronicity? TO HELL WITH WFMU... now, wait, gotta think that one a bit more...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Julie:

hahaha
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Julie:

Post 70s Elton, Y'all, that doesn't happen much
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Julie:

What's your plan? My plan is pain...haha
Avatar 6:43pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:41 Julie: Solo Morrissey has his moments, actually many of them, at least late 80s/early 90s. Solo Sting then........
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Julie:

I believe it but I'm not about to pursue it
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My most serious conflict with an Artist's different periods (leaving aside the things he says & does for one second) is Clapton. Cause I play Gittar & stuff.
But Morrissey is on the list...well - actually more for his attitudes than his Solo work, in fact...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Julie:

I really only know the EC hits and I guess that's for the best. I would like to delve deeper into Cream though
Avatar 6:46pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:44 Julie: I respect your choice, but personally speaking I kinda regret I ignored his solo stuff for many years. His political stances are another matter.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Julie:

yeah it's one thing to already be into it and THEN learn that stuff, but now that I know, yeah...no. same goes for EC post-Cream
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Julie:

people give EJ guff about his extravagant lifestyle but he seems a good guy, now anyway, even if a bit shortfused
Avatar 6:48pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Then again, I really disliked Cream for a long time. And now it's like a "where were you all my life"sort of thing.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think Cream get overshadowed being precisely between TheWho & Hendrix. Even on my shortlists. But their records meant as much to me as anybody's. & when I turn on my amp - it shows.
Yeah always felt Elton was for real. Maybe a bit of a Royalist in the ReagenThatcher era - I dunno... A lot of people sucked then...
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Julie:

I suppose I could do a set of cancelled/repugnant artists LOL
Avatar 6:50pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@6:48 Julie: My favorite Elton soundbite re: spending is that audio interview clip: "well I don't get crazy you know", sure you didn't back then (70s?).
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm chris in the redwoods:

hahaha, Julie. that might be fun.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Julie:

good excuse to play Gary Glitter
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Julie:

even Kate replaced Rolf Harris on her reissue, which I didn't know till last week

Avatar 6:59pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

  6:59pm Sunny:

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Handy Haversack:

My "Aunt" Beatrice, my dad's cousin with whom he had lived as a kid, married a Finnish American in the diplomatic service and lived in Finland for quite some time before settling near SF, CA. She was Jorma's mother.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Julie:
