Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm WR:

you on bus? Sheila B was late, she said it took her 2 hours to get through the tunnel.
Avatar 7:12pm HyperDose:

Sheila B also had trouble getting into NJ earlier, glad you made it safely!
Avatar 7:24pm ARB:

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:05pm WR:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm chresti:

Hello!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm WR:

Hi ARB, doc, diciassette, HyperDose, Ken F H P, chresti, and where is webhamsterHenry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm chresti:

Hi WR.
Avatar 🎭 8:08pm Listener Gregory:

Just tuned in to hear the DJ speak. Seems like I missed a lot of fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm chresti:

Is the bed next to the fireplace?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm diciassette:

Ahoy everyone! *clink clink clink..*
Avatar 🎭 8:16pm Listener Gregory:

I thought I recognized this sample from Oliver, but I had to Google it. It's impressive how difficult it can be to recognize a sample when there's rapping and other music over it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm chresti:

*clinK* diciassette!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm chresti:

This is great!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:20pm doctorjazz:

I think I've heard Rich Man sampled, not this one though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Love that version of Rich Girl so much, Gwen Stefani had the really successful but not as good version in the 00s
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm doctorjazz:

My daughter tells is Gwen Stefani does it...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm doctorjazz:

The Jamaican version.
Avatar 8:22pm HyperDose:

Slick Rick never disappoints
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm chresti:

GoooWash, it's paint.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm WR:

Gouache is a real word.
Avatar 🎭 8:27pm Listener Gregory:

Maybe Oliver is popular because artists saw it as kids, and so it has stuck in their minds. My school put it on, and I memorized all the songs as a result.
Avatar 🎭 8:28pm Listener Gregory:

I believe Gouache (good pronunciation, Chresti) is oil paint in the form of a stick that you can draw with. It's like the oil version of a pastel stick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm chresti:

*like tempera
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm chresti:

Water base, opaque watercolor
Avatar 🎭 8:32pm Listener Gregory:

Son of a gun, I learned something! Thanks, @Chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm chresti:

Hey big spender!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm diciassette:

That really got my attention!
Avatar 8:33pm HyperDose:

My cat's too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm chresti:

A pleasure, LG.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm doctorjazz:

Ayyyyyyyeeee!
Avatar 8:34pm HyperDose:

This is in my top 10 greatest hip-hop songs of all time. Easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Thank u all for the gouache wisdom
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm WR:

better gouache than gauche
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Bronwyn Bishop:

we may go into slight OT tonight
Avatar 🎭 8:46pm Listener Gregory:

The GTDS email says you're on until 10 pm tonight, BB. So, settle in!
Avatar 8:48pm HyperDose:

2002 was definitely a simpler time
Avatar 8:51pm HyperDose:

Inspectah Deck is also a member of Czarface. Highly recommended sample-heavy trip hop. They did a few collaborative albums with recently-departed MF DOOM.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

OT!!!! (Just kidding)
Avatar 🎭 8:54pm Listener Gregory:

I wore out the JC Superstar record in high school, but I don't recognize this.
Avatar 🎭 8:54pm Listener Gregory:

Except for maybe the bass line?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm chresti:

Thanks Bronwyn! Enjoying!
Avatar 8:55pm HyperDose:

That is a pretty heavy bassline
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm doctorjazz:

No Jay Z, Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm doctorjazz:

Are you actually going to 10?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm doctorjazz:

(Says 7-9 on my FMU app)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm doctorjazz:

(Inquiring minds need to know)
Avatar 🎭 9:00pm Listener Gregory:

If we end before 10, I'm going to ask for a refund. I have the email for proof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Bronwyn Bishop:

going until 9pm- must be a typo in the email
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Bronwyn Bishop:

but more like 9:05 bc i was late
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:01pm doctorjazz:

OK, night is saved!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, BB!
Avatar 9:03pm HyperDose:

Thanks, Bronwyn! Super cool to see DJs take a chance doing something different, and maybe out of your comfort zone. Would love a part 2 in the future!
Avatar 🎭 9:07pm Listener Gregory:

Re: Googoosh, thanks for the explanation, BB. It reminds me of Phil Glass's Heroes Symphony (actually a trio of symphonies based on David Bowie's Berlin trilogy). It doesn't sound at all like the Bowie record, but each movement is based on some musical element of the song, which Glass based the composition on. If I were a musician, I might be able to hear it. (I did get the riff from "Heaven on Their Minds.")
Avatar 🎭 9:08pm Listener Gregory:

Great idea for a show. Thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:08pm diciassette:

This has been fun! Thank you Bronwyn B
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thank you darlings!!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

'Night!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm doctorjazz:

It depends on the part sampled, some are clearly stated (Ray Charles had a famous sample, I look cool when I tell my daughter what was sampled). Sometimesit's just a small instrumental snippet (as LG mentioned Glass did); I'm not sure the original performer can always recognize those. I suspect legal issues, royalties, etc, have to do work these choices.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 10:21pm WR:

thank you, got busy with work near the end. Will relisten. Fun show.
