Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from August 6, 2021 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hey there, AJH fans! Bronwyn is stuck on the subway and will be a little late. Hang out a bit and she'll get here as soon as the travel gods allow.
Avatar 🎭 7:10pm
Listener Gregory:

Whew! I thought I was the late one.
Avatar 7:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

HI DARLINGS!!!!! So sorry for the delay. We will go into sweet sweet OT to make up for it

Hey, BB!

Bronwyn Bishop:

Could you all hear that mic break ok? I was getting a weird feedback thing in the headphones
Avatar 🎭 7:20pm
Listener Gregory:

I heard the mic break perfectly, but Randy is very soft compared to that and Dolly. Next song is fine.
Avatar 🎭 7:21pm
Listener Gregory:

Also, what is the musical that the Newman song is from??? Never heard of it. His "Faust" is truly wonderful, IMHO.
Avatar 🎭 7:33pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, can you say something about the Randy Newman musical? I really would like to know.
Excellent mic break, by the way.

everyone may be late but I’m the latest (so far). Ahoy!

Listener Gregory, from wikipedia Randy Newman page:
A revue of Newman's songs, titled Maybe I'm Doing It Wrong, was performed at the Astor Place Theatre in New York City in 1982, and later at other theaters around the country. The New York cast featured Mark Linn-Baker and Deborah Rush,[37] and at one point included Treat Williams.[38]

Thanks WR!! Sorry for the lack of context Gregory, I am very discombobulated this evening

Hi-far company, on the way to Tanglewood to hear some jazz, nice warm up!

Bronwyn, I heard Jerusalem Demsas on the Ezra Klein podcast recently, and she talks as fast as you do!

Hey diciassette and doctorjazz!!

WR:

I hadn't known about Newman doing a version of Faust. Thank you for mentioning it Listener Gregory, something else on my list.
Avatar 7:43pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey DL great to have you here!! And great to have more fast talking representation!
Avatar 🎭 7:46pm
Listener Gregory:

Thanks much, @WR. Newman's Faust is a real musical, with a distinguished cast, from Linda Ronstadt to James Taylor. Very witty, especially if you read his liner notes.
Avatar 🎭 7:47pm
Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, enjoy Branford et al.
Avatar 7:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I played something from RN's Faust during my Halloween show :)

WR:

You did and looking back I see I did listen to the program, getting forgetful in my dotage.
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm
Listener Gregory:

Fascinating story about Fats Waller and Sunny Side. It doesn't sound like a Waller song to me, but he certainly was an accomplished songwriter.
Avatar 🎭 7:58pm

This bad boy sounds truly bad. Completely egregious.

What have I stumbled upon? A gathering of people! 😃
Avatar 🎭 8:07pm
Listener Gregory:

Interesting to see a song where Ira Gershwin is the third listed lyricist. Maybe he added or updated lyrics? Usually he doesn't need much help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
melinda:

I thought of another great 70s movie: Car Wash! dynamite soundtrack too.

Hi HyperDose.

Billy Murray! i thought he sounded a lot like Billy Nurray! (have always loved his song "K-K-K-Katy") (then i looked at the playlist once your mic break was on)
thanks for playing that~

"Jaws" wasn't a flop. But clearly you have noticed this.

Lewis Black the comedian?
Avatar 🎭 8:35pm

If the Jaws musical has the shark singing (as it certainly should), you must have the horses sing in yours.

@Melinda: I will put that on my list! Next up on my list is Saturday Night Fever

Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I'm late but glad I tuned in. Learning about the Casper musical is why we listen!
Avatar 🎭 8:56pm
Listener Gregory:

My Casper memories are before the movie: the Saturday morning cartoon of the 60s. "Casper the friendliest ghost, the friendliest ghost I know," the theme song began. I think every plot was the same.
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

We are going into OT tonight to make up for starting late!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Listener Gregory I remember that show. I didn't like it, something was just too weird about it. Sad how everybody was afraid of Casper who just wanted to play, and I didn't like his round bald head.

This number is the opposite - they want Casper to come out and play with them!
Avatar 🎭 9:02pm
Listener Gregory:

I guess we're not supposed to think that Casper is a dead child. That might take some of the fun out of it. Yes, @Lizzie, there was something depressing about the show, though it always ended happily. But he would get so dejected... every single episode.
Avatar 🎭 9:03pm
Listener Gregory:

I'm fully in favor of overtime, but I hope the show doesn't go to penalty kicks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Exactly - weird and sad.
Avatar 🎭 9:12pm

Thanks, BB! I missed you while I was on vacation.

So envious, I'm not even the king of my closet.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:16pm

But nice to picture you singing this as walking along in Manhattan. Thanks for another stellar episode of AJH!
Avatar 9:16pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I just moved into a way better apartment on 90th & 2nd. IM THE KING OF NEW YORK
Avatar 9:16pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I missed you while I was busy moving last week!
Avatar 9:17pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: My other "walking around Manhattan" Newsies pick is the opening number, Carrying the Banner. This thing has a better score than it really should...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:18pm

thanks Bronwyn!
