"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Mike W.:

Alan Licked! All-time NYC guitar wizard. My three top memories of Alan all involve me as a DJ:

1. Tonic, c. 2000 - I’m playing a record in the basement middle early evening, for vibes. Alan walks up, says only, “You’re playing Charles’s record.” Charles Curtis dbl LP, great drones and similar via cello.

Mike W.:

2. Tonic, New Year’s Eve, I think 2002? Believe it was the same night that Derek Bailey came to our NYE party in the basement. Accidentally, but still. Anyway, around 10:30pm I was tenderizing the room with some hits, and played Bowie’s “Black Country Rock.” Alan walked up, said nothing. Just stood there, I believe approvingly. That’s how I took it, and I still appreciate the gesture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am
Anton:

Don Henley is still alive! it was a hoax!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am
Anton:

Dirty Don lives on
  9:41am
Mike W.:

3. The last show I went to is also the last show where I DJed. Union Pool, Feb 2020, Steve Gunn + William Tyler + Dump et al. Alan was in the closing ensemble cover of “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” with Gunn as Nico. Anyway, earlier, again, I’m just playin the hits. Meat Puppets “Up on the Sun.” Alan approaches me at the turntables and, correct me if I’m wrong please Alan, but I think you said, with characteristic understatement, “This is my favorite song.”

Several better memories involve watching/hearing Alan play in dozens of contexts. I can only think of Calvin Johnson in terms of him ruining rock for an entire generation.

Some things can be true at the same time. It may be that you feel Calvin Johnson rules *and* he ruined rock for an entire generation. Not necessarily mutually exclusive concepts. Maybe though.

The best cover i heard of "Mean Streets" was a super slowed down, Doom version of it. It was the Seabrook brothers and Joe Russo as Jazz Raygun. Pretty sure taper 'cleantones' was there and i may just hit him up to hear it again. Still blowing my mind.
