I remember Norm saying in an interview that his Bob Saget roast was actually edited after the fact to make it seem like he did better when in fact he actually bombed even harder. He was laughing his ass off when he said this...what a legend

@CC, I can definitely tell this has been edited...a lot of awkward silences shortened...maybe even additional laughs piped in.

@NGH, you still see the occasional vacant lot with overgrown weeds and broken down car in that part of Brooklyn these days.

I remember when I first moved to NYC in 2000, I would constantly see cars on fire on the main road shoulders and vacant lots, I don't think I've seen more then one since 2005.

man if anyone's kicking around Brooklyn there's an amazing painting show at Hauser Wirth of Philip Guston's work. I'm trying to get my passport rushed so I can come see it, you'd be wise to take advantage Sam/anyone who lives in New York

I needed some good house. I've been to many house raves, but my favorite was soulful house at Ft Greene Park, as it was free and people from all walks of life dancing. Junior Vazquez was there plus others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Sam Segal:

@CC: I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to visual art, so I wasn't really familiar with Guston until the controversy last year around the exhibition of his work with the Klan imagery. Seems like a positive step that his work is being shown again.

@Sam Yeah I believe the Hauser Wirth show is a response to the swath of Museum shows being delayed last year. It's having a huge impact in the painting world, people are really being affected by the exhibition. Really hoping I can get to it....

Speaking of attending events live, I got a ticket to see John Zorn/Masada (the latest version) in August in a Sunday Matinee performance at the Village Vanguard. Must be many folks going out-it was announced in the afternoon, I wanted to check at home for conflicts and went on the VV site that night, and there was 1 ticket left (sold out after I bought it). Psyched.
I'm OK with going out in the current "vaccine required" NY mandate (wouldn't be comfortable, say, in Florida or Texas, for that and obviously other reasons...)

zzz, glad to hear it, Lage is amazing (have great recordings of him with Nels Cline, in duo and in the Nels Cline 4. Have seen him live with the Nels Cline 4 and his own group. Psyched to get to see them (Pretty sure Zorn will play, though he does conduct many Masada units).
I got the last ticket to the 1st Sunday (couldn't get to the 2nd, conflict that day)

WR:

doc, what do you mean by the "original masada quartet"? yes I am being lazy...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

The original Masada was: John Zorn - alto sax, Dave Douglas - trumpet, Joey Baron - drums, Greg Cohen - bass)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
doctorjazz:

D'Angelo gets the most interesting groove on; it's sort of an "anti-groove", swings in still motion, if I'm making any sense.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
doctorjazz:

Feels much like Marvin Gaye sometimes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Sam Segal:

I know exactly what you mean, Doc.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:10pm
doctorjazz:

That quartet, Zorn, Douglas, Cohen, Baron, was crazy good, intense, quite a live show way back then (and put out 10 studio albums, labeled 1-10 in hebrew letters, a few live albums, then dissolved. Douglas has done quite a few fine things on his own, of course).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:11pm
zzz:

ever see electric masada? way intense,
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
doctorjazz:

Yup, I did see Electric Masada once, and they were indeed very intense, but I preferred the quartet.
  11:14pm
rw:

I didn't know there was a controversy over the Klan imagery in Guston's paintings. I guess I should get a subscription to the NYTimes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
zzz:

yeah totally different EM like a super heavy shredding jam band with an electric miles flavor, and as for the original, i think zorn supposedly didnt like the comparison but i think really was like ornette coleman’s early quartet meets klezmer/jewish music scales
Avatar 11:20pm
Constantly Choking:

RW, The performative fear of Guston's imagery was willfully misguided...the Museums greatly underestimated the public's capacity to understand complicated art and the backlash within the art world has been intense and ceaseless, hence the current show at Hauser & Wirth
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
WR:

Gotta cut out a bit early. Laters all.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
doctorjazz:

That's a pretty good description, zzz. I found the diffuse shredding and jamming of Electric Masada a bit unfocused, the quartet just were at peak constantly during the show.

I'm not sure Zorn would mind the comparison-around the same time as that Masada band (maybe a bit before) he had his Spy vs Spy band with Tim Berne, which I also saw, was also intense and tremendous, and was playing Ornette's music. He was obviously very influenced by Ornette)

I find it annoying when folks like Brotzmann make challenging work and then people experience the fact that they are being challenged as an experience of something bad or oblivious. People can be so smug while missing a point entirely
Avatar 🥁 11:48pm
northguineahills:

Sort of like how John Cage performed Water Walk on "I've got a secret" or Frank Zappa played a bicycle on the Steve Allen Show. Both performances garnered a lot of laughter from the audience, but both John and Frank liked to incorporate humor in their works...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:48pm

Mostly, I don't think most people want to work at music (or movies, or art...). They work all day-entertainment is how these things are perceived, not art for the most part, requiring you put some effort into it.

Jarrett is one I didn't get to see, now too late (I actually went to see him solo years back at the Village Vanguard. Noisy, tourist crowd that night. He started to play, stopped. Waited a few minutes, started again, stopped. Waited a few minutes, played a third time, stopped, got up, left, show over. I understood why he was upset with the noise, but I was really pissed at the show being cancelled from under me (they did refund, he wouldn't go back out), and I never went to see him again.
