Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from October 8, 2021 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

So many artists selling their catalogs these days. It's a bit dispiriting. I mean, they should absolutely get paid, but does it signal the further devaluing of their creativity? Are they getting out while the getting's still good?

On a rainy night in 1973 this girl and I were on the Sunset Strip. She pointed at a huge billboard for For the Roses and said "I saw her at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion."Whaa...when!?" I exclaimed. A year later she took me to see Joni at The Anaheim Convention Center right after Court and Spark came out. It was a high powered show - the energy was zinging around the room. At one point Joni asked the audience if anyone had a request. I yelled out Smoke On The Water which was in heavy rotation on the radio at the time. The guffawing and gasps of horror were audible. Joni said "What did he say!?" That night we drove home in silence. My companion(Pictured at right) was so pissed she was with such an asshole. I went home alone and though 'That's it, I really did it now.' I had plenty of other girls to drive crazy I thought, but no one like her. Fortunately for me she didn't stay mad and we stayed friend until she disappeared off the face of this Earth.

Warning---cleaned-up lyric in the Minnie Riperton song. Doesn't harm a fine interpretation at all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
melinda:

@UM you too, then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm

Gerry!

Yes, melinda...breaking the song away from the version the brain takes no trouble with has that effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
melinda:

the GTDS artists tributes have been very timely for me. My mom was a Silent Generation person who stopped paying attention to popular music some time in the early 60s, I think, and over the last ten years or so I liked introducing her to singer-songwriters she may have been somewhat aware of but didn't really know. Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot were two she really liked.

I'm loving this show, UM! I was one of those girls who always hauled a guitar around and played all of Joni's songs, but it's been a long time and I've forgotten so many of them. Thank you!

As per Webmaster Henry 2:23, if I remember, Joni is a self taught guitarist, and used many open and unusual tunings on her guitar.

Sorry, Uncle Mike. I have been listening to the entirety of this great show today, but have been unable to actively participate in the comments as my phone is playing catastrophic games with me. The device is all I have at the moment and is on its death bed. Nonetheless, you have done us all a great service with this program in tribute to one of the greatest pop artists of our lifetime. Thanks so much. I will be playing this one back again from the Archives, I'm sure.
