I tend to prefer Linda Boemhard to Heili Helder as the band's singer but this song is just a classic.

This is something
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It's a classic indeed!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm

The band had two keysboards, a drummer and no bass, and used a bassoon on some tracks.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

Why is this the only show in which I often forget to turn off the mic?

my father has always said golden earring had a hit [in the US] in the 70s and 80s... he was waiting for a 90s hit from them
Avatar 1:18pm
Mr Fab:

that Ro-D-Ys was rather Bonzo-esque.
Avatar 1:20pm
drolletje:

I prefer Anna-Lisa Ingemansson's version of Kalinka...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
MHLee:

I'd agree Mr Fab... very equestrian statue
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I actually took that of an LP of the Radio Nederland World Service, white sleeve, playlist typed on a typewriter. I yet have to find out the story behind those LPs. I found a bunch of them years ago in a thrift store.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Anna-Lisa unfortunately wasn't Dutch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
MHLee:

I wish New Jersey Dutch was still a thing. Tiny dialects like that bring so much flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
MHLee:

I've met people with Amish Deitsch as a first language and can image something similar but Dutch.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Sometimes these dialects are rather German than Dutch. I happen to know that is the case with Pennsylvanian Dutch
Avatar 1:32pm
drolletje:

wouldn't it be easier to bury him first and then plant the willow, rather than uproot the tree, dump the corpse and then replant the poor tree?
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Jan Turkenburg:

LOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
MHLee:

Yes --- Deitsch/Pennsylvania Dutch are one and the same. I believe archaically instead of saying Dutch is Germanic it was said German is Dutch
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
Jan Turkenburg:

a pity I didn't leave the mic open this time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
MHLee:

But the New Jersey Dutch were new amsterdams holdouts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
MHLee:

Bury Me Beneath the willow was a song i used to play
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Dutch and Deutsch (German) are different languages with overlapping roots. German grammar is far more complex than Dutch, for one...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:40pm
Candy-O'67:

Shocking Blue time!!!!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Jan Turkenburg:

one of my favorite tracks of theirs!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Candy-O'67:

Same here, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm
MHLee:

"It might seem logical to think that this might be due to a simple mistranslation or a butchering of the word Deutsch (German) by the English-speaking Pennsylvanians. However, the real explanation apparently lies in the original use of the word "Dutch" in the English language.

In 18th and 19th century English, the word "Dutch" was used to refer to the broad Germanic region, encompassing modern-day Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland, and so could quite appropriately refer to these settlers in Pennsylvania."

- on the origin of the misnomer
Avatar 1:46pm
drolletje:

Yay! Beatlecover!
Avatar 1:48pm
Mr Fab:

Ah, that would explain the odd use of "Dutch" to mean German in expressions like "Dutch angles" (camera angles inspired by German Expressionist filmmaking) or "Dutch" records, early German comedy dialect records. i just figured 20th century America didn't know the difference between the Netherlands and Germany.

Hi Beany!
Avatar 1:50pm
drolletje:

BEANY!! I thought you were out for the night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
MHLee:

I read when I was child that expressions like going Dutch, Dutch snack, and Dutch oven had roots in so animosity between the Dutch and English as a result of the Anglo-Dutch wars

Beany:

I have the WFMU app!
