Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm WR:

The plan was that I would be out exercising now, but putting on proper clothes to go in public and socks and shoes was just too high a bar for making it out. Instead gonna listen and sort music files.

Hi Gary. I'm here on time for once. I take a wide view of the topic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Franco Twinkie:

I'm awake and ready to fly into the sun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

TDK and Franco T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Last night per usual Jesse Jarnow played some songs that were beyond the pail when it comes to the topic at hand. I tried an experiment - could I go from zero to sixty if I smoked a hash joint quickly without pause and then put on the head phones?
Avatar 7:14pm tim abdellah:

This is cool - and, yeah, psychedelic :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

What happened then, Franco? Tim, I feel like the Brazilians can do no wrong when it comes to anything music-related
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Gary, I just sat hear thinking about housework.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

"Sat hear" ... I see what you did there
Avatar 7:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pardon if more for the Explorers' Room board...
How much was 'Psych' an inevitable technical media transition ? Like the Long Player itself...
Consider say - TheFlamingo's 'I Only Have Eyes For You' track in 1959 (ironically - an older Show Tune)...
Been noted that the earliest Psych trax proper leaned towards Novelty - they cite 'My Friend Jack' by TheSmoke for this... Roger McGuinn noted : 'Greenwich Village became The World'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Not intentionally!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Kids, in two weeks, Tim will join me, Peter Doolan (of Monrakplengthai) and our own Doug Schulkind for a celbration of music blogs past, present, and ... [echo-y voice] BEYOND
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Haha, RevRab, I wish Evan was here to join in with his thoughts!
Avatar 7:21pm tim abdellah:

I thought this sounded Kabyle. never heard this artist before. Never thought really about Berber psychedelia. That cover is something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

Oh, Tim! I should send you all I have of them ... they're pretty terrific
Avatar 7:22pm TDK60:

Revrab - "inevitable technical media transition" sounds like a psych title from '68, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

Or a lost Stereolab single
Avatar 7:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Brian Wilson in Los Angeles was steeped in Lounge & Exotica technique. TheBeatles' George Martin had worked in absurdist Comedy & was simpatico with the electronically avant Radiophonic Workshop... I love how Os Mutantes reportedly didn't know about recording cymbals backwards - so they sprayed aerosols near microphones instead...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Gary:

Haha, I didn't know that about Os Mutantes, RevRab
Avatar 7:27pm tim abdellah:

Good questions RevRab. Is a psychedelic record one that uses technical manipulation to achieve something not typically heard in the "normal" audioscape? And hence signifying something from another/altered reality?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Gary:

I would say yes, Tim, but I wonder if it's more often a more narrowly defined genre (or subgenre)
Avatar 7:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Robyn Hitchcock has said he identifies really as a Surrealistic. Which is perhaps distinct - but likewise implies a state more than a specific aesthetic. Altho' I'm making an argument for aesthetic prior to or distinct from the state. Tho' Joe Meek say was clearly whacked...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm PaulRobeson1920:

Hi Hi Hi all!

Well, you know baby, Baby!

Well, you can imitate everyone you know
Yes, you can imitate everyone you know
I told you so
Avatar 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

' People called themselves Prog because they didn't want to admit they still took drugs. '
- Mick Farren
Avatar 7:32pm tim abdellah:

@Gary - Yeah for sure. Like the Radiophonic Workshop or experimental things coming out of the European art/classical music traditions aren't really considered "Psychedelic", are they?
Avatar 7:35pm TDK60:

I have a an old pal like that, Gary. Ran a record shop. To him, it's music related to the psychedelic experience and in that '60s-'70s time period, or referencing it. I took a wider view, played him some Godspeed You Black Emperor that feels psych (tho not intended as such maybe.) He was unmoved. Hee...
Avatar 7:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Right. When the state became unfashionable - perhaps the techniques &/or aesthetics remained...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Gary:

PaulRobeson1920!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

TDK, and what about that King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard Blizzard Fizzers or whatever they are
Avatar 7:39pm TDK60:

Gary, That Lizard bunch are wild.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I just walked in the kitchen to get some juice and ask Chresti what she wanted to eat. She said she just ate part of a hash brownie and then told me about a drug dealer that show up at this party house with a briefcase full of drugs. Then she started eating a plum and laughing! Underneath, Gary was parsing the parameters of Psych. We point mirrors at mirrors over here.
Avatar 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Then there's the International aspect of it. The Drummer Stream has really opened my eyes to the reality of what was happening with Bollywood & Asia - while TheBeatles receive endless credit for blending Rawk~Pop & Eastern Musics even the smallest amount by 1965~6 !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm PaulRobeson1920:

Psychedelic music is not, is not…
Easier to say what it is not than what IT is

It’s Rock & Roll!!! “It’s been said before but it’s a never been told!”

To me psychedelic music is-
“You know, you must take a look at the new land
The swimming pool and the teeth of your friend
The dirt in my hand
You know, you must take a look at me…
Baby, baby, I love you! You do!”
Avatar 7:42pm TDK60:

Hi PaulR.'20. Franco T: I even get a psych feeling from the Righteous Bros.' Ebb Tide. But that's just me. Hoo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

I gotta hear me some of that Lizard bunch -- haven't yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

What album(s) should I start with?
Avatar 7:51pm TDK60:

Gary, I'm not close up enough to know their albums. They did do two with microtonal guitars. Many others. I just hear them on the Wake show a lot, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm PaulRobeson1920:

Hi TDK’60.
Woooo Hoo
Avatar 7:55pm tim abdellah:

Avatar 7:56pm tim abdellah:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Oh, shoot -- anyone else having stream issues? I seem to have a clear signal on my phone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Franco Twinkie:

My uncle hit a dear going over the Grapevine and killed it. He threw it in the back of his truck and continued on this way. He had a grocery store in the San Joaquin Valley that had a butcher department in the back, so they cut up the dear and cooked it. One day he was looking for the guy who was supposed to be working the register. He found him in a dark corner sitting on a stool eating a whole haunch of venison. When my uncle asked him why he wasn't minding the store he said "i No Me Molestes! with chunks of dear meat falling out of his mouth. I saw this happen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:

Haha
Avatar 8:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& then the 'worker' didn't know what truck hit him...
Maybe he was hungry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Franco Twinkie:

His name was Sport. He was real fat and one leg was shorter than the other, so he wore a Frankenstein shoe on one foot.

Avatar 8:47pm StringOFperils:

Yeah, it is really good; I'm happy my listening has extended out into the Arab world more in recent years, as more of it gets disseminated in the digital world.
  8:48pm rw:

You call this psychedelic??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Gary:

Haha, RW, I mentioned "psychedelic elements" throughout the cassette when I uploaded it to my blog, yes

There was what I thot a rather good doc about Boogaloo on PBS - covered the way various Artists in Latin Jazz / 'Salsa' felt about it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

"Salsa" was a marketing term that not all of the artists were behind, I was shocked to read in a book not too long ago

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm WR:

i heard The Lebron Brothers for the first time recently on the drummer stream. They strong and these other Latin tracks are good but Psychedelic?
Avatar 9:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

WR - watch that doc for how that played out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Gary:

They are NOT IN THE LEAST PSYCHEDELIC. However, the titles lyrics can trick one into believing they are/might be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Gary:

By the same token, what if we think of them as psychedelic, what if we give them that at the outset? What happens to our listening (if anything)?
Avatar 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bill Graham would've loved to mix them up, if he could.
Avatar 9:36pm tim abdellah:

Psychedelia is in the ear of the behearer :)
