Favoriting October 24, 2021: Crumb, Gubaidulina, Berio
A conglomeration of composer greats converge at The Stork Club to celebrate their birthdays today (Gubaidalina and Crumb are happily still with us, as she celebrates the big 9-0 - with a new recording just out - and he turns 92). Tatar-Russian Gubaidulina had to hide the Western music scores she was learning, as well as her spiritual leanings, from the Soviet authorities joins Italian experimental and electronic music pioneer Berio, and West-Virginia-born modern classical and avant-garde composer George Crumb.

Looks like Berio was one of the founding directors of my workplace. And it took WFMU to hear his music

@TDK60: the Swingles were on Vanguard for a while, where Peter Schickele (PDQ Bach) was one of the producers, and they did some great stuff together.

Stork - Yes, as a kid I heard some of the Swingles 1960s records which were fun pop mixed with Bach type vocals, if I recall correctly. (A Swingle did a backing vocal on a Procol Harum tune.)

TDK&=: yeah, my parents had a few of their albums - my dad was a Bach-Head, and dug the Swingles. They also did an interesting record with the Modern Jazz Quartet.

my first George Crumb was at a young age, my older sister having ancient voices of children. i doubt she liked it; it was probably given her by a bedmate. so i took it.
i didn't like it either, but it made me think. i knew it wasn't an out-and-out joke, so figured *somebody* likes this...listened again.
hmmm -nope!
but i did use it extensively in the first of many sound collages (what my friends called "trip tapes", even though some of them came a few years before i ever dropped acid)
a few decades later i listened to the album again and appreciated it.

@RevRab: That wikithing is out of date to say the least. The performance space has been closed for 7+ years (asbestos), but should reopen next year. Before probably closing again for 5+ years due to major renovation work at Centre Pompidou (IRCAM depends on it for power, water and AC, and most of it is underground)

That describes a bunch of stuff for me also, coel - i had similar input from older folks who knew better, but i was a hard-headed little bastard and didn't always listen. Later I learned that they were right, and I was an ignorant douchebag. But this is how we grow!

fred I reckoned you'd have something to say about the accuracy of the wikithing.
Yeah ...Have thot myself lucky that there's not much of anything Ive ever liked that I'm ashamed of
...but what I'm ashamed of is what I remember I couldn't get to yet.

... i had an older brother who played that role for me Stork (whether he wanted to or not) - though i wouldn't say he knew "better", he just knew *more*.
...but my older sister did not know better! she just had a very wide variety of guys she went out/slept with so was influenced by them.
...luckily. it was one or other of her boyfriends who nudged me to appreciate the blues, Bowie, t rex, and turned both my brother and i onto black sabbath

Herr, Stork, I am about to share a bunch of live recordings of Albert Ayler. Would you (or anyone else here today) like a copy? Just let me know to what email address I should send the links. Use the WFMU contact option on my WFMU profile if you don't want to put your email in the comments.

WR Thank you! i appreciate it truly but i feel i should tell you that i absolutely can't stand Albert Ayler! i can say i've listened to at least scores of Ayler tracks, only liking 1, and not hating one other.
but if it's easier for you to just send to all on the list i may download some of it and give it another shot.
