Hey Woo!

Dennis Diken:

hi LesleyK! @Woo - I had the pleasure of compiling and writing the notes for the Meek Razor & Tie CD. we put a band together and performed a few Meek-themed shows at the Fez in '95 & '96. great fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm
Woo:

That's great Dennis! I just got out my copy and I will read your notes again as well as give the disc a spin. After this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm

@Woo - yeah, a real labor of love! thanks!

Probably Christine Keeler, not Ruby Keeler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm

@Jesse - glad you're here! did I say 'Ruby Keeler'? ha ha!!

Spoooooooooky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
myron feld:

And coincidentally, yesterday a friend told me about the Ruby Keeler & Jimmy Cagney number "Shanghai Lil" from "Footlight Parade" -- well worth a youtube look. It's pre-code, so it's set in an opium den and bar, and features some doped-up ingenues. That's entertainment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Dennis Diken:

@myron feld - will check that out, to be sure!

@myron feld - well alright! thanks!!
  3:16pm
Dudski:

That's so close to the Spoonful original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Dennis Diken:

@Dudski - The Spoonful rocked it up a bunch - a totally unhinged cut!! Zal Yanovsky on vocals
  3:19pm
Dudski:

They were great. And Sebastian was very knowledgeable about folk music and jug bands and all that.
  3:20pm
Dudski:

Of course when you say Yanovsky the "unhinged" part is just implied. What a character and a great guitarist. Always loved his work on "Coconut Grove".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
Dennis Diken:

@Dudski - yes indeed, I learned so much from listening to The Spoonful when I was a kid - without realizing it! Zal, my favorite guitarist!! agreed re "Coconut Grove"!
  3:24pm
Dudski:

"Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful" is one of those essential albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Dennis Diken:

@Dudski - no argument here!! I can say the same thing for Daydream (I wrote liner notes for CD reishes of Hums and Daydream) as well as Do You Believe In Magic!
  3:31pm
Dudski:

I think it is easy to forget how important the Spoonful were. After the Beatles hit them and the Byrds were kind of the first great American bands.
Avatar 3:32pm
Eric R:

I need to check my copy of Hums!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Dennis Diken:

@Dudski - don't get me started! @Eric R - that was a total dream gig - I interviewed all four guys, including Zally!
Avatar 3:33pm
Eric R:

in NYC the "Gods" (according to me and my friends) were the Lovin' Spoonful and the Young Rascals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Dennis Diken:

@Eric R - did you get to see them live?
Avatar 3:35pm
Eric R:

no, never did. I saw Sebastian do a surprise set at the Troubadour open mic, much later (1979?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Dennis Diken:

@Eric R - man, I woulda loved to have seen the original band live - tho I hear their performances could be erratic. but still...
Avatar 3:40pm
Eric R:

would have loved to have seen them at the Night Owl
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Dennis Diken:

@EricR - me too!!!
Avatar 3:43pm
Kim Reynolds:

That's a great Vincent Price album.
Avatar 3:44pm
Patti K:

Always loved this song, dig hearing Vincent Price too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Dennis Diken:

@Kim Reynolds - indeed it is! I bought it at a street sale on St. Marks Place years ago! @Patti K - for sure!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm

Thanks Dennis! I will not set my clock back this weekend.
