Noriko Awaya  Wakare no Burusu (Farewell Blues)   Favoriting 1937  Noriko Awaya, Japanese female soprano, Kayōkyoku singer, chansonneuse, actress, and author. Born in Aomori, August 12, 1907. Died September 22, 1999.

She was trained as a classical singer, but switched to popular music in order to be able to support herself. She made her debut in 1930, and scored several major hits later in the 1930s. Awaya went on to become a pioneer of the Japanese chanson scene, and was called "Burūsu no joō" (The Queen of Blues) because many of her songs had the word "Blues" in the title.

Although she gave many performances for military audiences during WWII, she was also an outspoken person who regularly ran afoul of the wartime authorities. She was criticized for performing in expensive dresses, make-up and perm hair (which was not allowed during the war), and several of her songs were banned. At one occasion she sang for British and American POW's in English, which was also prohibited during the war.

Hello Jan and all. Listening as much as I can until work demands pull me away.

One of the last recordings the stream played was Wynonnie Harris "Keep on Churnin'". I looked at a Harris compilation I recently bought and 81 recordings and that one isn't on it. Mr Fab, the stream is deep and wide.

Yes, that qualifies as yodeling.
  10:31am
Listener Robert:

With some electronic help, I'll translate:

From the other side of the Atlantic
In the fabulous America
Shines a fantastic eclat*:
The dollar!
It makes the bums in rags dream
And by the thousands, from old Europe
The merchants of soup and the crazies
Whose brains are subject to charms,
Leaving their farm or shop,
Or the low places in between,
They leave having sold everything up to their shirt,
They set down on the promised land,
To see the god in his church,
The god Dollar!

*"Eclat" is one of those words with no exact English equivalent. Literally it's a loud noise, but it's used to mean any burst of publicity, notoriety, etc., i.e. a "splash".
The dollar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
chresti:

well, you know, I know the guy, struggling to make a living, always pushed for time, underpayed, etc... So I open the door and take the package ...
  10:35am
Listener Robert:

Yes, but "hullaballoo" has too many syllables!
  Swag For Life Member 10:36am
WR:

Thanks Listener Robert.

Of course Jan, being a good neighbor is the way to be.
  10:37am
Listener Robert:

I'll just Google Translate the rest:

But already in the mist
Pale morning
This sun that lights up
It's a big dollar!
It lights up the world
With its screaming fire
And the men all around
Worship him without delay

We do not lose the north, you think,
Just enough time to take off
To settle down, to seed
It goes!
We play, we win, we lose, we cheat
Oil, socks, wasteland
Everything is bought, everything is sold, we get rich
Dollar!

We put old tires in a can
And even, so that nothing is lost,
We make alcohol with shit
Dollar!
Until the good Lord that we mobilize
And that we sell in every church
Up for auction like a commodity
With dollars!

But on the fiery city
In the pale sky
This demented figure
It's the god Dollar!
No need to advertise
No need for effort
He wins all souls
Because it is gold

Cars, phonos, radios, machines,
Chemicals for cooking
Every house is a factory
Standard
At dawn in a production Ford
We're going to sell our groceries
And the evening we find his darling
Standard
So we spin records
We get stupefied without danger since
We are insured against all risks
Lucky!
Life that turns like a wheel
Splash you and shake you
He likes to roll you in the mud
The god Dollar

When the night over the city
Put down her black coat
In the still sky
Watch the god dollar
He haunts all dreams
Crazy people from here below
And when the day breaks
He's still here!

We come hammer, in their madness
Men have only one desire left
A supreme desire in life:
Gold !
If they listened to each other, by everyone
We would sow it all around
Deep in the deep earth
Again !
We would feed them relentlessly
Goats, sheep, even cows
So that instead of milk they spit
Gold !
Gold everywhere, liquid gold
Gold in gas, solid gold
Full brains and full stomachs
Again ! Again !

But under a sky of ash
You will see one evening
The god Dollar descend
From the top of his perch
And in front of his machines
Without understanding yet
Man die of starvation
Under mountains of gold!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am
David (in London):

Hey MHL.
  10:42am
Listener Robert:

Interesting that Google Translate gives in English for "eclat" in isolation "sparkle", which actually would fit that context very well.
  10:47am
Listener Robert:

The part it translated as, "We do not lose the north, you think", is a metaphor, the person saying, "Well, we're not REALLY getting so lost", as an excuse. Like, "You think you're not really losing sight of your values."
  Swag For Life Member 10:49am
WR:

Something like "not losing your way"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Dave in New York!
  10:53am
Listener Robert:

"We come hammer" should be "We become hammers". Can't blame Google Translate when a poetic contraction is used.

MHLee, in 1976 I built my first FM transmitter and my friend 700 meters further down the road, phoned me to let me hear he was recieving the music (Greased Lightning) I was broadcasting: WOW!!!
  10:59am
Listener Robert:

Got to say Google Translate did a better job than I could have for the most part, and its vocabulary is much wider. Here's how it renders the first verse, which I translated above:

Across the Atlantic
In fabulous America
Shone with a fantastic glow
The dollar
The beggars in rags are dreamed of
The soup vendors and the goofs
Whose brain beats the charm
The dollar
And by the thousands, from old Europe
Leaving his farm or his shop
Or the shady slums
We leave, having sold even his shirt
We put the cap on the promised land
To see the god in his church
The god Dollar!

I also think "Dont le cerveau bat la breloque" means whose brains beat TO the charm, i.e. that the charm is beating out a beat that their brain follows.

Very metaphoric song.
