Traffic’s in my top 5. I kept missing opportunities to see them at Fillmore East (esp that bill w/Fairport). Finally, got another chance when they played the Academy of Music in ‘74. It was not easy getting to the show. Had to hitch a ride from upstate where I was at college. Lindisfarne opened, and Traffic was a quartet. They were very loose and free form. Maybe, a little too loose - Chris Wood fell flat on his face.
Just made the last bus back to New Paltz. No way I was going to show up at my family’s apt in Bklyn. They thought I was safe and sound in my dorm room.

I got another Traffic (sorta) story. I went to the Bottom Line to see Mason/Capaldi, and Steve Winwood is sitting at a table. Mason kept asking him to come up on stage. I could see that Winwood was not into it. He finally gave up and joined them on stage. After a little huddle, they did Gimme Some Lovin’ and Low Spark. I think Steve deliberately didn’t want to do any Mason era Traffic tunes given their history.

Have seen him a number of times, solo, with band, not sure what the show will be tonight (not long before the Pandemic, I saw him at the old City Winery, where he did a solo all request show, where he had baskets on each table, and the audience was encouraged to put 2 requests on a slip or paper. He almost pulled off a solo "And Your Birds Can Sing", valiant effort (and a really fun show).

Mornin' to BOB and PT! As you both know, Dave Mason was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic, even though he only played on their first album. Do you think he would have deserved the invite as a solo artist without his early connection to the band?

I think Mason was on the first two Traffic albums (even though he’s not pictured on the US release). He also rejoined for Welcome to the Canteen. He’s best work was with Traffic and Alone Together. Also, a pivotal figure w/others (Hendrix, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek and the Dominos, etc).

Steve Winwood + Jack Bruce are my two fav British musicians. I’d buy any record that either had anything to do with (back when I was buying records). The only regret was a Fania All Stars LP w/Stevie that I bought in the ‘70s. It should’ve been great. I’m a fan of salsa. The record was ruined by horrible disco string arrangements by Gene Page (I think that was his name). One of the few records that I hated so much that I traded it in.

Hey, @Jesse Farlowe! Great to hear from you! Honored and thrilled that you're listening. I remember with great envy you telling me about that magical Fillmore East bill. We were endowed with great musical riches in them days. Hope all is well with you...still waiting for the new issue of Bedloe's Island!

@coelacanthø: Winwood is singing with the Powerhouse (with Paul Jones "shadowing" his vocal).

Wasn't there a short-lived group with Capaldi, Wood, Denny Laine and Mick Weaver? Post-Traffic break-up in '69.
Avatar 🥁 12:46pm
PT:

@wmfromD: Are you thinking of Mason, Capaldi, Wood & Frog (aka Wooden Frog)? Short-lived indeed, though they opened for Hendrix at the Royal Albert Hall. They also recorded a couple of BBC sessions that Bob and I didn't think were up to snuff for this show. We have very high standards, you know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
coelacanth∅:

Thanks Pete. i'll have to listen to that again because i was here thinking they had 2 great vocalists but this isn't either!
...not that it's bad - it did the job; just not Steve's usual beautifully smooth delivery

Is that Chris Wood on piano, or someone else playing a composition of his ? It's impressive as hell, whichever...

I've heard that Dave Mason can be hard to work with. He was booted from Ringo Starr's All Star Band because he wasn't gelling well with the other bandmates musically and also, they found him to be conceited.

Some great guitar-slinging on Mason's Alone Together album.

I have a theory that Jim Capaldi was the Traffic member with the best sense of humor, or at least the most groan-worthy. Not only did he write their often witty lyrics, but he called his solo album 'Whale Meat Again.'

PeterT (the Seattle one):

Question on the John Barleycorn tour - I saw them headline with Mott the Hoople and Fairport Convention at FE, but for some reason I think I recall Rick Grech was touring with them at that point. Am I remembering wrong ?

I was hoping you were going to play this one.

dan @116 a lot of what i've seen and heard points toward that too. ...which is ironic as the original line-up of traffic could most easily afford to lose him, of the 4, in my opinion.

@PeterT (the Seattle one): I believe you remember correctly (not that I would doubt someone with your track record for recall!) Grech (né Grechko) toured with Traffic throughout 1970. There's an unreleased live album from FE, recorded late 70, and they're a 4-piece then. And of course, Grech stuck around for Low Spark.

Here's the source on the Dave Mason firing:

Source: Interview of Mark Rivera at Beatlefan (a fanzine), issue #143. He was fired as he didn't learn his part and Rivera said, "Never once came prepared (...) and anytime things were right, he'd puff his chest up like he did everything". He was fired after Ringo asked the band if he should be fired↩

Pete, thank you. My wife would disagree with your assessment of my recall, but I'm secretly pleased I remembered *that* bit.

Little known fact- The day before Paper Sun was released, Procol Harum released their classic Whiter Shade of Pale, which became a national best seller. Paper Sun would have been huge otherwise. A nd Steve Winwood sings and plays organ on Santana's cover version of WS Of P!!

Gerry from Miami:

"40,000 Headmen" was covered by Blood, Sweat and Tears on their third album. A very smooth arrangement with those great horn parts. David Clayton-Thomas gives a bit different twist to the lyrics from Winwood's take. Both are excellent.
