Hello David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am
MHLee:

"Notable folk singer Clarence Ashley actually did make an earlier recording of the same song in 1933, where his version is definitively in the bluegrass style." A nitpick but conventional wisdom is bluegrass emerges in the 1940s. We'd call that old-time.

Kitschy Mama:

Hi chresti
  10:25am
Listener Robert:

Interesting that record cover is from 1948, because I'd been thinking "shanty" is a recent mistake for "chanty", since a "shanty" is a shack. Seems that spelling goes back farther than I'd thought.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am

@Robert Sharp uses the CH spelling in 1909
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
David (in London):

Yo, Feldy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
chresti:

Hi Feldy!
  10:35am
Listener Robert:

I wonder whether "sea shanty" spelled that way to mean a song was influenced by the existence of temporary dwellings on the seacoast, hence some confusion. But I see by Wiktionary that "shanty" in the meaning of "shack" is ALSO thought to be derived from a French word spelled with an initial "c".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
David (in London):

Or it could be arsy Brits not wanting to spell anything in a French fashion...
  10:37am
Listener Robert:

Maybe people heard sea shanties being sung from within sea shanties!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
chresti:

Hi Robert! I somehow connect "shanty" with "chant-chanson"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am
chresti:

*or what David said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am
chresti:

au chante
  10:47am
MHLee:

I wonder if the word occurs in Stephenson and how he spells it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Feldy:

I love all these diverse character voices
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am
David (in London):

As I Brit, I have always known it and spelled it as a 'Shanty'. I didn't even know the meaning of 'a shack'. I'll have to drop that in sometime and see if anyone responds.
  10:51am
MHLee:

Melville might also be worth checking
  10:52am
MHLee:

Actually even simpler would be to check an 1800s dictionary... they should be in public domain
  10:59am
MHLee:

The only chanty or shanty in Websters 1828 is

SHANTY, for janty, gay; showy. [Not in use or local.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
Jan Turkenburg:

Janty... mmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
Jan Turkenburg:

is almost like 'Jantje' in Dutch of 'Jantie' (in dialect, pronounced as janty) meaning little Jan. I was called like that untill I was 10 or so :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am
David (in London):

Crikey, it's Yma, hold onto your hats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am

Come to my little shanty sounds more exotic than come to my little shack.
