Hi Adam.

Anthony Franchini, an Italian that the Hawaiian Ferera met in NYC
and chose as a musical partner had an amazingly varied career, including a time playing fiddle in Hank Williams band and violin for Marlene Dietrich during her Las Vegas stint.

That prompted me to look up the lyrics of "Complainte de Mackie". I don't know German, but I've heard the original discussed, and it's interesting that the French version of the song is a little closer to the English.

The original Beggar's Opera is not far off three hundred years old now. Amazing.

裏町人生
Ura-machi-jin-sei
back town life

According to Uehara Satoshi's Japanese Wikipedia page was released in August of 1937.
ja.wikipedia.org...
裏, ura, means rear or back, make me think of Louis Armstrong's "Back O'town Blues". Don't know that song well enough by memory to identify any relationship except the jazz life association with joys and trials of common folks.

I wonder how many Jolson recordings have him doing his "mammy" bit. I would not have guessed that a song called Chloe would be one.
