Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from January 25, 2022 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

they like the idea of not being recognised by the neighbours on practice night
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

I find there is a dynamic range to the BoC skronk that is almost meditative. It might sound confrontational on a huge sound system, but on a home stereo there are some really cool dynamics that sound great!
Avatar 9:29pm
Mr Fab:

Ah, I see. Originally, I thought it was a Grim Reaper/"Scream" kinda mask. Y'know what - he should do a cover of "I'll Be Your Mirror."

In his own unique way, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
drowsy:

I get the meditative thing. Like sometimes between shortwave stations you just roll with it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

One of the things that I feel going to experimental shows now is a kind of camaraderie that I felt when I would go to punk shows as a kid. I think punk can still be like that, but I find the kinds of kids and weirdos at experimental shows are all record collectors, nerds, and weirdos looking for a community.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
drowsy:

But I'm sure there's a practice here, like the longest drum freakout that ends up creating its own surface.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Aitch:

An ode to DIY dentistry
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
Austin Rich:

I meet as many old punks turned experimentors at shows like this as I do kids trying their own thing. And these shows are more diverse than a lot of punk shows I used to go to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm
drowsy:

That is awesome.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

I'm not the first to say it, but I think Experimental is the new Punk Rock.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Aitch:

Bone-saw is the new guitar
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33pm
Austin Rich:

The thing that's missing from this presentation is the pushing their table around, almost knocking it over, and the audience swarming their table, in a wonderful chaos that is very cathartic.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

There's a guy not too far from the Mid-Valley, in Corvallis, who used to open for Suicide back in the day. He now runs sound for local experimental shows, and has an act called "Luthor Maggot."

I'm still working out the techincal aspects of The Lava Lamp Lounge, and how to monitor signals / relay them in real time / not have to use six mixers to do so. So the home-made delay loop is just part of the fun, i guess?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

It is cool if the venue soundboard is part of the product tho

Any questions for the artist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

How much of the output over time is making/messing with hardware/software and how much is curating sounds?
  9:59pm
Bri:

I agree, experimental is the new punk
  10:01pm
Ellen:

Hi, Austin. Sorry I missed the first hour, I was on a virtual tour of Jewish Spain with my parents. For some reason, I can't hear the livestream at all. No sound at all. I'm not sure what I'm not doing

I'm so glad to be here. Thank you for inviting me. I used to live and work and meditate at Oregon's Dzogchen Retreat Center. This performer might want to check that out sometime

ARU are from Dubuque, Iowa. Great experimental scene there, apparently.

BLOOD OF CHHINNAMASTIKA:

That's great their still around
  10:27pm

I'm enjoying this. I almost forgot how relaxing sound collage and drone are for me. They drown out negative thinking, keeping me in the single present moment
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

Yeah, ARU is still slaying, as far as I know. I should hit up Randy... see what they are up to.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

I think Sickness is one of your choices, too?
  10:30pm

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

For those who are from the Mid-Valley: In Eugene, there's a gaming store that would have monthly experimental shows, called Funagain Gaimes. During the day, they would be playing Warhammer. They they would clear out, and us weirdos would put on a noise show in the back. (And catch up on the most recently modules for Cyberpunk 2020.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, BoC, you need more Formaldehydra in your life.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Austin Rich:

Whoops! That should read, "Who aren't from the Mid-Valley..."
  10:41pm
Ellen:

I miss Funagain shows, as well. I met so many talented people through them, including JUICE MACHINE. The show where you (Austin) and I and JUICE MACHINE and Curtis all played for my birthday and Autumn Equinox at David's was a watershed event in my life. First cassette release, Bast Awakening and DEATH MUTATIONS. Thank you so much for that
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Austin Rich:

That houseshow at David's was hella dope. I never miss Curtis play if I can avoid it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

"Curtis" is the performer in [view], who build amazing weird gadgets that make BIG NOISES. It's something else. You have to see it to believe it.
  10:43pm
Ellen:

I clicked with him immediately at the Salem Noise Fest where I reconnected with you. Remember his set with Don, glorious
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Austin Rich:

Him and Don are something else together. I wish I could have seen their full set... I was filming something else at the time.

I think you mean Corvallis Noise Fest? I don't think Salem has had more than the one, that sort of fell apart.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Austin Rich:

This one and the next two are BoC selections.
  10:48pm
BLOOD OF CHHINNAMASTIKA:

oh sick Peace Doctrine! This is a selection from my label, Matt Gomes from Misery Engine's cutup noise side project.
Misery Engine's LP will be out on my label in hopefully less than 9 months or so! I just sent it out to the record plant

Sorry, yes, Corvallis, you are correct.

Dope! Yeah, I need more Peace Doctrine.
