	9:10pm Ellen Lovebug: I saw Iggy Pop on a double bill with The Pretenders. I love Iggy. And of course he is represented in Velvet Goldmine...a film I adore. Iggy live was so raw.
	👻 9:10pm Austin Rich: Ellen: I think your reaction is totally appropriate. It's a pretty chilling song. A lot of punk is sort of hard to digest, sort of like a lot of hip hop. But I think it's worth it; sometimes, the imagery is on purpose.
	👻 9:10pm Austin Rich: Iggy is the best. Saw him a couple times, and he was SO MUCH FUN. Just a wonderful performer.
	9:12pm Mr. X: Punk is generally anti-fascist (except for maybe the Oi! genre.) Any use of Nazi imagery or word choice is generally intended as mockery of fascism.

I've been meaning to connect up my previous History Lesson (about Radio and Electricity's impact on music) and fill in the gaps between that show and this show. Maybe that's a good project to work on here at Sheena.

	👻 9:24pm Austin Rich: I would say that a lot of the stuff for this show (and for next week's show... tipping my hand, here) are solidly in the "top faves" category. Sort of my "go to" music when I just want something upbeat and loud, which seems to be my default mode.

	👻 9:25pm Austin Rich: A cover of the song "Strychnine" by the band "Strychnine" was the first song I ever played on the radio, on my first broadcast, on April 15th, 1998.
	9:26pm Mr. X: So yeah, Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith Group compiled Nuggets, that's why it's so punk.
	👻 9:26pm Austin Rich: From about 2004 to 2006, I did an "all Nuggets-era" show, with the thesis statement that Lenny Kaye was right, and that Punk Rock started in the Garage Era. The DJ at our Wedding was instructed to only play "Nuggets Era Music," and it was a great reception.

Fact: I was flying to my grandma's birthday party back East, and I flew Eugene to Portland, scheduled a 4-hour layover before my East-bound flight, got picked up at the airport, went to see Patti Smith at the Roseland, and then back to the airport

	👻 9:29pm Austin Rich: I think Lester Bangs essay about The Count Five, and his imagined "other albums they released," might be one of the best essays on Rock Music that I've ever read, and he does lay out the blueprint for what punk should sound like in that essay. (He doesn't call it that, but he suspects that future Count Five albums would be punk. But he imagined all of that; there was only every one Count Five album.)

	9:39pm Formaldehydra: I vaguely recall finding a beat up vinyl copy of that first album at a used book/record store I used to frequent as a kid. It was already peeled, of course. I didn’t buy it
	9:40pm Formaldehydra: More notable finds at that shop that I DID buy: Bauhaus’ Seing the Heartache BBC sessions, Trout Mask Replica, some King Crimson records…

	👻 9:46pm Austin Rich: Woah, Formaldehydra! Those are some good scores. I found a few used King Crimson records in Portland in the early 2000s, when kids hadn't figured out yet that they were cool and the prices went up.
	9:46pm Ellen Lovebug: I had no idea Sub Pop existed in 1968. I heard of them shortly before '90 through Grunge. @Austin I will gladly take you up on that.
	👻 9:46pm Austin Rich: I found a Can CD in a thrift store a few blocks from here... and a Residents CD... and then the store closed! Now it's a head shop.
	👻 9:47pm Austin Rich: This is a re-issue on Sub-Pop. I think the original album, which was recorded in 1968, never got released. But it is a very strange and wonderful album from the late 60's, that sounds great on the Sub Pop re-issue.
	9:47pm Mr. X: Michael Yonkers is a new one on me. I like it.
	9:48pm Formaldehydra: Have y’all heard the BEYOND THE CALICO WALL comp? It’s another sixties garage comp, lots of deep cuts in there. “Tripsy” by the Pebble Episode and that one song by Riders of the Mark are both highlights that come to mind. It opens with a even more tripped-out take on “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,” and a cover of “In a Gadda Da Vida” done by this band called Six Feet Under (not the death metal band) where the drum solo sounds like it’s being playing a school marching band kit

	👻 10:07pm Austin Rich: I had this argument at The Matador in 2001 with my friend Lyra: That The Doors were one of the gateway drugs to punk and goth. Lyra, a goth, refused to hear anything I had to say on this subject, as she hated The Doors. I also had to break the news to her that X's "Soul Kitchen" was a cover, of a song by a certain band...
	👻 10:08pm Austin Rich: (The Matador is an excellent rock club in PDX, with very cool old bathrooms, and used to have great DJs and stuff. I haven't been there in years, so I have no idea if it's around / still open.)

	👻 10:10pm Austin Rich: She sort of hung out with the Cathead crew, but not really. She "technically" played bass for us on one song: a cover of The Germs "Forming." She was gonna learn more songs, but got bored and decided she didn't like to practice.

	10:11pm Mr. X: I've tuned into Alice Coopers radio show a time or two, back in the 90s. It was generally entertaining and educational. I guess he's still doing it?
	👻 10:12pm Austin Rich: While Alice Cooper is sort of divisive among a lot of people, I think he is one of the stops along the way to Punk Rock.

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	9:10pm Ellen Lovebug: I saw Iggy Pop on a double bill with The Pretenders. I love Iggy. And of course he is represented in Velvet Goldmine...a film I adore. Iggy live was so raw.
	👻 9:10pm Austin Rich: Ellen: I think your reaction is totally appropriate. It's a pretty chilling song. A lot of punk is sort of hard to digest, sort of like a lot of hip hop. But I think it's worth it; sometimes, the imagery is on purpose.
	👻 9:10pm Austin Rich: Iggy is the best. Saw him a couple times, and he was SO MUCH FUN. Just a wonderful performer.
	9:12pm Mr. X: Punk is generally anti-fascist (except for maybe the Oi! genre.) Any use of Nazi imagery or word choice is generally intended as mockery of fascism.

	👻 9:14pm Austin Rich: When I originally aired this show (in 2011), I immediately got calls from people who said, "But you left THIS out." I've been meaning to connect up my previous History Lesson (about Radio and Electricity's impact on music) and fill in the gaps between that show and this show. Maybe that's a good project to work on here at Sheena.

	9:14pm Mr Fab: Mr. X: Right, or as parody, like when jewish performers like Joey Ramone sang about a "Blitzkreig Bop," or the Dictators "Master Race Rock."

	👻 9:24pm Austin Rich: I would say that a lot of the stuff for this show (and for next week's show... tipping my hand, here) are solidly in the "top faves" category. Sort of my "go to" music when I just want something upbeat and loud, which seems to be my default mode.

	👻 9:25pm Austin Rich: A cover of the song "Strychnine" by the band "Strychnine" was the first song I ever played on the radio, on my first broadcast, on April 15th, 1998.
	9:26pm Mr. X: So yeah, Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith Group compiled Nuggets, that's why it's so punk.
	👻 9:26pm Austin Rich: From about 2004 to 2006, I did an "all Nuggets-era" show, with the thesis statement that Lenny Kaye was right, and that Punk Rock started in the Garage Era. The DJ at our Wedding was instructed to only play "Nuggets Era Music," and it was a great reception.

Fact: I was flying to my grandma's birthday party back East, and I flew Eugene to Portland, scheduled a 4-hour layover before my East-bound flight, got picked up at the airport, went to see Patti Smith at the Roseland, and then back to the airport

	👻 9:29pm Austin Rich: I think Lester Bangs essay about The Count Five, and his imagined "other albums they released," might be one of the best essays on Rock Music that I've ever read, and he does lay out the blueprint for what punk should sound like in that essay. (He doesn't call it that, but he suspects that future Count Five albums would be punk. But he imagined all of that; there was only every one Count Five album.)

	9:39pm Formaldehydra: I vaguely recall finding a beat up vinyl copy of that first album at a used book/record store I used to frequent as a kid. It was already peeled, of course. I didn’t buy it

	👻 9:46pm Austin Rich: Woah, Formaldehydra! Those are some good scores. I found a few used King Crimson records in Portland in the early 2000s, when kids hadn't figured out yet that they were cool and the prices went up.

	👻 9:46pm Austin Rich: I found a Can CD in a thrift store a few blocks from here... and a Residents CD... and then the store closed! Now it's a head shop.
	👻 9:47pm Austin Rich: This is a re-issue on Sub-Pop. I think the original album, which was recorded in 1968, never got released. But it is a very strange and wonderful album from the late 60's, that sounds great on the Sub Pop re-issue.
	9:47pm Mr. X: Michael Yonkers is a new one on me. I like it.
	9:48pm Formaldehydra: Have y’all heard the BEYOND THE CALICO WALL comp? It’s another sixties garage comp, lots of deep cuts in there. “Tripsy” by the Pebble Episode and that one song by Riders of the Mark are both highlights that come to mind. It opens with a even more tripped-out take on “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,” and a cover of “In a Gadda Da Vida” done by this band called Six Feet Under (not the death metal band) where the drum solo sounds like it’s being playing a school marching band kit
