A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

This song makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I have a very visceral reaction to the words, "final solution," regardless of context. It's cognitive dissonance to fear the words but like the music
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:06pm
Krys O.:

I bought 390 Degrees of Simulated Stereo in my senior year of high school in 1981. Still have it. I can't say that about a lot of the records I bought, but that's another story.
  9:07pm
Ellen Lovebug:

This is one of those songs where it's as though the lyrics are deliberately mumbled so as to be enigmatic
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:07pm
Krys O.:

Oddly enough I'm wearing my Pere Ubu 90 Days Same As Cash t-shirt.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

Nice! Pere Ubu needs more representation.
  9:10pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I saw Iggy Pop on a double bill with The Pretenders. I love Iggy. And of course he is represented in Velvet Goldmine...a film I adore. Iggy live was so raw.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

Ellen: I think your reaction is totally appropriate. It's a pretty chilling song. A lot of punk is sort of hard to digest, sort of like a lot of hip hop. But I think it's worth it; sometimes, the imagery is on purpose.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm
Austin Rich:

Iggy is the best. Saw him a couple times, and he was SO MUCH FUN. Just a wonderful performer.
Avatar 9:12pm
Mr. X:

Punk is generally anti-fascist (except for maybe the Oi! genre.) Any use of Nazi imagery or word choice is generally intended as mockery of fascism.
  9:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I love that quote. Opposing complacency
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Austin Rich:

When I originally aired this show (in 2011), I immediately got calls from people who said, "But you left THIS out." I've been meaning to connect up my previous History Lesson (about Radio and Electricity's impact on music) and fill in the gaps between that show and this show. Maybe that's a good project to work on here at Sheena.
  9:14pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Chess Records was actually started by a pair of Jewish brothers, immigrants from Poland.
Avatar 9:14pm
Mr Fab:

Mr. X: Right, or as parody, like when jewish performers like Joey Ramone sang about a "Blitzkreig Bop," or the Dictators "Master Race Rock."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Austin Rich:

I'm looking for a good Chess Records Documentary.
  9:16pm
Ellen Lovebug:

This is definitely hippie psychedelic rock (which I grew up idolizing, I had a Woodstock poster on my wall and played the soundtrack often)
Avatar 9:16pm
Mr. X:

The hippies were the original punks? All right, I'll buy that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Austin Rich:

One omission in this show: Captain Beefheart. He even wrote a song about how he felt like his contribution to Punk Rock was already being overlooked by music critics. ("Ashtray Heart" is the song, supposedly.)
  9:17pm
Bri:

I had a Woodstock poster as well! Went through a bit of a hippie phase back in high school

Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Bri!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

I would say that a lot of the stuff for this show (and for next week's show... tipping my hand, here) are solidly in the "top faves" category. Sort of my "go to" music when I just want something upbeat and loud, which seems to be my default mode.
Avatar 9:24pm
Mr. X:

Such a great song.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Austin Rich:

A cover of the song "Strychnine" by the band "Strychnine" was the first song I ever played on the radio, on my first broadcast, on April 15th, 1998.
Avatar 9:26pm
Mr. X:

So yeah, Lenny Kaye of Patti Smith Group compiled Nuggets, that's why it's so punk.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm
Austin Rich:

From about 2004 to 2006, I did an "all Nuggets-era" show, with the thesis statement that Lenny Kaye was right, and that Punk Rock started in the Garage Era. The DJ at our Wedding was instructed to only play "Nuggets Era Music," and it was a great reception.
Avatar 🎸 9:27pm
Formaldehydra:

Speaking of “Strychnine”: one of the tracks on my “monthly music exchange” CD (curated by Austin himself) from last year had a track titles “Ernest Strychnine”
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Austin Rich:

That's right! I forgot about that track. Pretty good!
Avatar 🎸 9:28pm
Formaldehydra:

I love the Residents’ take on “Psychotic Reaction”
  9:28pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Patti Smith is amazing live. I saw her in Portland. Fact: I was flying to my grandma's birthday party back East, and I flew Eugene to Portland, scheduled a 4-hour layover before my East-bound flight, got picked up at the airport, went to see Patti Smith at the Roseland, and then back to the airport
Avatar 🎸 9:28pm
Formaldehydra:

Oh! And on my HARSH RECITAL album, I have a track titled “Circumference Redacted”…a nod to this tune playing right now, haha
  9:28pm
Ellen Lovebug:

The Residents were one of the odder shows I've seen
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

I think Lester Bangs essay about The Count Five, and his imagined "other albums they released," might be one of the best essays on Rock Music that I've ever read, and he does lay out the blueprint for what punk should sound like in that essay. (He doesn't call it that, but he suspects that future Count Five albums would be punk. But he imagined all of that; there was only every one Count Five album.)
Avatar 9:29pm
Mr. X:

@Ellen, I might have been at that Patti show, too. Just a few years ago?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Austin Rich:

I saw Patti Smith in PDX too, Ellen. It was the first "Perk" I got for working at KPSU, after they hired me as Programming Director. The show was Amazing.

I love the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. My mom surprised me the other day by correctly guessing Lou Reed for a crossword puzzle entry
Avatar 🎸 9:34pm
Formaldehydra:

I think I prefer this version over the “Waldo Jeffers” story…
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Austin Rich:

That was Lester Bang's philosophy, too: you can make up something that's probably more true than anything a rock star would make up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Austin Rich:

I've been meaning to make new music for Waldo's story. A future show, I guess.

One of the first albums I bought when I moved to PDX was that Velvets and Nico album, that I only had on tape before. I was stoked to find it on vinyl, and bought it immediately.

I vaguely recall finding a beat up vinyl copy of that first album at a used book/record store I used to frequent as a kid. It was already peeled, of course. I didn’t buy it

I know all these psychedelic tracks. I probably know everything on the Nuggets collection...

That Nuggets Collection is well worth picking up. I could hook you up, Ellen, if you need it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

Woah, Formaldehydra! Those are some good scores. I found a few used King Crimson records in Portland in the early 2000s, when kids hadn't figured out yet that they were cool and the prices went up.
  9:46pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I had no idea Sub Pop existed in 1968. I heard of them shortly before '90 through Grunge. @Austin I will gladly take you up on that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

I found a Can CD in a thrift store a few blocks from here... and a Residents CD... and then the store closed! Now it's a head shop.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Austin Rich:

This is a re-issue on Sub-Pop. I think the original album, which was recorded in 1968, never got released. But it is a very strange and wonderful album from the late 60's, that sounds great on the Sub Pop re-issue.
Avatar 9:47pm
Mr. X:

Michael Yonkers is a new one on me. I like it.
Avatar 🎸 9:48pm
Formaldehydra:

Have y’all heard the BEYOND THE CALICO WALL comp? It’s another sixties garage comp, lots of deep cuts in there. “Tripsy” by the Pebble Episode and that one song by Riders of the Mark are both highlights that come to mind. It opens with a even more tripped-out take on “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,” and a cover of “In a Gadda Da Vida” done by this band called Six Feet Under (not the death metal band) where the drum solo sounds like it’s being playing a school marching band kit
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:48pm
Austin Rich:

He was active for decades, but I think he almost never had a record deal until very late into his career.
  9:48pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I've been immersed in nostalgia recently as I hooked up a cassette deck next to my treadmill. I started with Eugene's Hairy Mamas
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

I've been wanting to get that comp, Formaldehydra! I've heard it's good, but I don't have it yet.

This is new to me and quite groovy! Ooh I would treasure that
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm

It's All Meat is pretty obscure, but I really love the album. I found it in 2011, researching this show!

I love Kiisu. Happy memories. Of course MC5 links back to Patti Smith, she had been married to Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder if there is enough material to do a full "MC5 / Steamed Hams" mash up?
Avatar 9:57pm

It's hard to engineer for all the different speakers people are going to be using. It's like trying to design a web page that works on both computers and phones.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:57pm
Austin Rich:

Kiisu is the best. He let me sleep on his floor so many times when I was suddenly homeless that I owe him eternally. Plus we've been in bands together... he's wonderful.
Avatar 9:57pm
Mr. X:

Oh how Patti loved Fred Sonic Smith.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

Ok now we're back in my childhood bedroom, I had a huge tapestry with Jim Morrison's face on it on one of my walls. I read the biography, No One Here Gets Out Alive, and was enthralled by his poetry
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
Austin Rich:

I had this argument at The Matador in 2001 with my friend Lyra: That The Doors were one of the gateway drugs to punk and goth. Lyra, a goth, refused to hear anything I had to say on this subject, as she hated The Doors.

I also had to break the news to her that X's "Soul Kitchen" was a cover, of a song by a certain band...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Austin Rich:

(The Matador is an excellent rock club in PDX, with very cool old bathrooms, and used to have great DJs and stuff. I haven't been there in years, so I have no idea if it's around / still open.)
  10:09pm
Ellen Lovebug:

HAHAHAHAHA oh that's amusing. Was Lyra Honey Vizer?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:09pm

No. Honey Vizer is Honey Vizer, a rock star and celebrity in her own right that I would name drop if I were so lucky!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

Lyra is Lyra. She sort of went by Lyra Cyst, but not always.

Austin Rich:

She sort of hung out with the Cathead crew, but not really. She "technically" played bass for us on one song: a cover of The Germs "Forming." She was gonna learn more songs, but got bored and decided she didn't like to practice.

Androu B.:

Hi there, Austin! Just noticed how lonely it is here on the chatboard and thought I'd join in for some extra company!
Lovin' the selections so far. Iggy & The Stooges and MC5 are right up my alley.
Just tuned in as you were playing SLB. I had one of their albums (can't remember which, maybe the eponymous album). Can you guess which format I had it in?
Avatar 10:11pm
Mr. X:

I've tuned into Alice Coopers radio show a time or two, back in the 90s. It was generally entertaining and educational. I guess he's still doing it?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

While Alice Cooper is sort of divisive among a lot of people, I think he is one of the stops along the way to Punk Rock.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Austin Rich:

Did you have SLB on 8 Track, Androu B?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:13pm
Will the Sound Guy:

This show is solid
Avatar 10:13pm
Mr. X:

At least Alice didn't turn out like Ted Nugent.

Androu B.:

DING DING DING! That's the correct answer!

When the Sound Guy likes your show, you know you are doing SOMETHING right.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Austin Rich:

Wow. I've been looking for an 8 Track recorder, like I used to have in the 90's. And a CART Machine, too.
  10:14pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Always up for The Stooges. Thanks for this
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. X: You are correct. Alice is a lot cooler than Ted ever was.

Hey Austin. So much happened before '75. Great premise

Hi there, Will! How's the little bundle of joy doing?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

Thanks Feldy! It's one of my fave eras of music, so it's easy to do for me.
  10:16pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I used to drive an early '70s station wagon for work at a group home, and it had an 8-track player. I used to scavenge whatever I could from thrift shops. It was delightful. My favorite was a compilation that had Bad Blood by Neil Sedaka on it

T. Rex is essential if you follow that Glam Proceeded Punk. I think they were more parallel, but really, T. Rex is good no matter what your allegiance is.

Congrats on the kid, Will! If I lived closer, I would offer Child Care... but that's an old career that I haven't done in years.

Marc Bolan had such a sweet guitar tone... many have tried, but it's never quite the same.
Avatar 10:18pm
Mr Fab:

Johnny Rotten would agree with you on Alice Cooper. He sang “I’m 18” as his Pistols audition, and think he later wrote a piece for a Cooper box set.
David Byrne said “Psycho Killer” was somewhat Alice-inspired.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Will the Sound Guy:

Thank you Austin!

I love T. Rex. And I think glam was its own FU to the establishment and a worthy contemporary of punk

Ellen, that's absolutely so cool! I was lucky that my dad took me to the Sound and Vision tour. It was Fantastic to see Bowie perform live.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

For my money, THE overlooked glam band of the era was Zolar-X. I saw them once, and they KILLED. Fantastic. And they actually believed they were from another planet.
  10:26pm
Androu B.:

@ Will - Glad to hear!

@Ellen Lovebug - Many years ago, one of WFMU's luminary DJs (possibly Irwin Chusid or Joe McGasko, not sure) had as a guest the founder of the 8-Track Preservation Society. Ever heard of it?

Zolar X pretty wild, have to check that out
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:28pm

Heather has been trying to get me into Bowie for a while, but for some reason, he has always eluded me. The song included here, and a couple others from the same album, are the only ones I've every played on my show, and know very well.
  10:29pm
Ellen Lovebug:

@Heather pleased to meet another Bowie devotee. & Sound & Vision is a great song, of course! @Austin I am definitely digging the Zolar-X and glad to see you opening to Bowie. @Androu B. No but I support the cause!

Everyone makes fun of me for not liking Bowie more. I mean, I like Side B of that Low album okay, I think? (I heard it at a party once.)
  10:31pm
Heather:

It's true. I have. There's so much you'd love. But I'm not going to push!

Ellen, Bowie means so much to me, it's absurd. You saw him 4 times?!?! Which tours? Seriously, that is so cool!!

Play the title track of Scary Monsters super loud on headphones Austin and then re-assess
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Heather and I actually discussed Bowie quite a bit on a podcast episode, and I do need to listen to more. But I'm always slow to pick up on things.

If it makes any difference: My wife loves Bowie too, and has even seen him live. I'm the odd person out.
  10:33pm
Ellen Lovebug:

A glam intro wouldn't be complete without the New York Dolls! @Heather: Serious Moonlight (once), Glass Spider (twice in 2 different states), and whatever the tour was that came through Portland shortly after 2000

But really, I'm not much of a fan.
  10:34pm
Heather:

Austin, I've said Low is what everyone expects you to dig immediately but my pick for you is Station to Station as an intro. Thoughts, Ellen? And Aitch, heck yessss Scary Monsters is an album that, like, i don't even have the words.

I'm not good at chat chains but Ellen!!! Holy cats, you saw the Glass Spider twice??? Amazing. I so unironically love that tour and adore the film of it!!!

@Ellen Lovebug

Just so happens I'm a big Bowie fan myself (since the 70's, when I was still in grade school)! In fact, I now have his entire discography one of my hard drives. (Incidentally, my brother has an 8-track player. And I once found the Low album on 8-track, which I gave to him.)

I do have to admit that I’m pretty shocked that you’re not a Bowie fan, Austin! “Station to Station” is indeed rock-solid, and the song “Heroes” is without question one of the Masterpieces of the 20th Century.

I know I told Heather this, but: the main barrier to Bowie has been that I usually look for a sense of humor / loud guitars in a lot of my music, and I wasn't getting that vibe from Bowie. But I'm middle aged now, so maybe I'll feel different? One of these days.

"Panic in Detroit" from Aladdin Sane has both. it's kind of punk.

@Mr Fab, a confession: Heroes took a while to grow on me until I heard the not radio edit with the lines "you, you can be mean. And I, I'll drink all the time" and I was all in.
