This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Those Bauhaus 2D design principles are so all-pervasive in graphic design that I never thought to consider those covers as being Albers' own work. They're exemplary.

really poppy, stereo-cartoonish rhumbas mambos and cha-chas are such a delightful twist on the form

generally on trumpet you're hearing Doc Severinsen, guitar Tony Mottola
Avatar 7:53pm
Flash Strap:

both of whom ended up doing quite a few albums as leader for command. don't much care for Mottola's tbh but we'll hear some nice stuff from Doc. Likewise it's very often Hyman on the keys

I lack the proper context to evaluate this... music? A beer hall in the 60's where everyone is on acid? Is that close?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
StringOFperils:

The last 4 tracks have me thinking of the TV theme for the show I Dream of Genie (1966.Hugo Montenegro/Richard Wess). They had to have been listening.

Moe Wechsler on keys for that Pertinent album actually
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm
PaulRobeson1920:

Good evening WFMU World!

I have seen most of these album covers at the thrift store… I buy the pretty ones

“Command Radio Checkout” is a heavy record. Those tones could freak anybody out
Avatar 8:03pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Help Me: just think of this as one of many instances where background music mutates to defy its own purpose and comes forward to be intentionally or unintentionally psychedelic and bizarre, largely to demonstrate new stereo technology, much of which was developed by the military during WWII and often worked on by the engineers and musicians on these recordings... music is so bizarre no matter when or where
Avatar 8:03pm
marpay:

I love this music as my folks had the FM radio playing 24 hours a day when i was little and this style was on all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

Avatar 8:12pm

@SoP: yeah muzak's whole history is intensely intertwined with military tech, reading about it is like reading a Pynchon novel, full of weird characters and very specific technical info
Avatar 8:13pm

excellent claps

@Flash Strap I recently bought a “Command Stereo Checkout” from the thrift store… & also recently about 200 records (mostly Classical & Opera) out the back of a 1800-Junk truck on Bethune St. in the West Village. I still have to listen to 90% of them

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
PaulRobeson1920:

@Flash all good

It’s a record to check your speakers sound and the tones are not really music…. The 1st side is tones and speaker balance and technical sounds
Side 2 is more music like
www.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:28pm
Flash Strap:

a lot of these goofy arrangements end up reminding me more than a little of Spike Jones, who I imagine was a major influence, acknowledged or otherwise
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

@Paul: ah yes, I love those records! I have a whole section of them in my collection but I don't have that one. side B is all stuff from other records naturally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
