G'day Brian & Current Crew.
I'm out here, but a bit too tired to follow the chat closely tonight.
Did 2, 3 hours Show recordings in 2 days. Then a 12 hour session at TRASH CULT yesterday.

Greetings, humans! Ate too many dark-chocolate-covered pretzels earlier, still thrumming from the sugar, playing silly games on this accursed phone while listening.

Brian, the getting a TRASH CULT Radio Show together to put on Sheena's Jungle Room is a great thing. Doing a 12 hour drinking session in TRASH CULT Bar, probably not so healthy.😉 But some great people to share time with.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am

Re: Anna K., the translations make a difference. I prefer any translation NOT by Constance Garnett. Those are rampant because they’re public domain IIRC. Garnett often rushed and also, as a Victorian type, occasionally chopped out the saucy bits.

Thank you, Lix. I'm hit or miss on Murakami. Loved After Dark and many of his short stories, but didn't like 1Q84. But, I'm willing to try him again.

Everything tells a story.
Now I’m thinking of
All the times I’ve
walked through someone’s house
after a fire.
The fire tells the story of its life
Where it began and how.
It’s journey t
How it grew
Obstacles it faced
It’s influence and impact
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08am
Ike:

@Brian, to be fair, some are quite fond of Garnett’s translations. It’s a matter of taste. I prefer the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.
  5:11am
LiXiviated Life:

The people in the house have their story
Sometimes an easy read
Sometimes it’s more dense
Most are tragic
Once in a while it’s a comedy
Truth is
I prefer the fires story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17am

There were two articles about translation in the latest issue of n+1. Interesting stuff from two very different angles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am
Ike:

Re: crime rates, also interesting to note NYC has a pretty low crime rate by U.S. standards, contrary to what the NY Post or other such Rupert Murdoch outlets would have us believe. Many smaller cities are far more violent per capita.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31am
Brian D:

Very true, Ike. See Bridgeport, CT, Washington, DC, New Orleans...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35am
Brian D:

And I love cities, Ike. To be clear. I lived in Bridgeport and worked at the paper there for a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
fred:

There's also the issue of what gets counted as crime. I was robbed 4 times, 2 were not by cops, and one of these was by a guy who had an "agreement" with local cops (also, a knife). I guess the official count ignored some of these

Hello Brian & folks.

Just started reading Lee Miller's War. I am fascinated by her. The articles for Vogue in '44/45 are to the point as are her photographs. Rumours that Kate Winslet will portray her in film have been around for several years now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45am
fred:

@morphe': I guess he's doomed then. That Peltier is still imprisoned is a shame, but Biden isn't going to set him free. What would be in it for him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46am

Lies, damn lies and statistics, Fred. I've been mugged twice -- both 30+ years ago and neither reported by me.
