Does anyone outside the US really think that Guantanamo was ever necessary, as the reporter claims? I think that keeping it open through now 4 presidents has done more than many things (though it's unfortunately not the only thing) to lower the reputation of the US abroad, at least here in Europe.
Things like the Republican party's brazen attempt to keep control in the face of changing demographics is another one. And Manchin's and Sinema's refusal to make it possible to pass voting rights legislation didn't help either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49am

Sadly, I think she's right about the US, Don. I'd be surprised if 20% of people here care that Guantanamo remains open.

There was a big disconnect between US (and UK) and world opinion at the beginning of the second Iraq war too. I seem to remember that something like 70-80% of people polled in those countries believed the lies about weapons of mass destruction and supported the invasion. In most of the rest of Europe sentiment was more like 70-80% being unconvinced by the claims (most famously stated by then foreign minister Joschka Fischer, in the UN if I recall correctly) and opposing the war. It was also when Rumsfeld formulated that crap about old vs. new Europe, since some of the former Warsaw Pact states (interestingly, mostly the same ones that are now dismantling democracy and serring up authoritarian governments) also supported AMerica's illegal war.

Safety - The US managed to inter thousands of Nazis throughout the US without incident
Security- US knows how to supermax thanks to practice on the war on drugs.
"Real reason" - Avoidance of habeas corpus - expected of Bush et al, shame on Obama & Biden
Of course, the torture is a field day for the psychopaths in the "intelligence" industry
One more sign that Western democracies have embraced the resurgence of Fascism with glee...

As a native South Carolinian, I can recommend ice tea if you make it real rather than buying some instant stiff. Make really strong black tea and either add sugar to taste while still warm (in any case, even really sweet tea probably has much less suger than that carbonated brown stuff) or, as I've started doing, make a sugar syrup and add when it's cold. Anyway, put some ice in your thermos in with the cooled down tea and it should stay cool enough through the show. Though I do seem to remember that Yankees don't really get sweet ice tea :D

Are there still no restrictions on bars there? I thought that cases were quite high in the US at the moment, though apparently going down some. Things are bad in Finland too (5000-10000 cases a day) but as a result bars and restaurants have to close at 6 pm. Because apparently the virus doesn't wake up until 6 pm..... (actually, it's because it tends to be in the evening when people get really drunk, sloppy and careless).

@Don, no, we "northerners" don't get sweet tea... And there are few restrictions here in NYC/NJ (though you must be vaxxed) and NO restrictions in most of the rest of the US. Hence, the ongoing disaster. And, sounds yummy @Scott. Enjoy.

Ike:

I’m a green tea addict and over time I’ve become a bit of a tea snob. Once you’ve had the half-decent loose-leaf green stuff from a place like Ten Ren in Chinatown, the cheap teabags taste like dishwater. And then if you get hooked on the good loose-leaf stuff from an online tea store like Little Red Cup or the really good stuff from Silk Road Teas, then you’ve leveled up again, and then even Ten Ren seems off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46am
Brian D:

Ike! Greetings, sir. And spot on about tea. Porto Rico has decent teabags, but I'm drinking (a popular commercial brand). Also, per our discussion on Anna Karenina last week, the translation I'm reading is by Rosemary Edmunds. English, but still saucy bits, as you put it.
Avatar 4:47am
Don in Tampere:

When I still made it to New York now and then, Ten Ren was always a "must-do" stop.
Surprisingly, most of my Finnish friends (who are far more northern than anyone in the US outside Alaska) have liked ice tea when I've made it, which is usually in the summer and on New Year's Day to go with the blackeyed peas and greens. How a South Carolina native ended up in a latitude somewhere about 2/3 of the way up Hudson Bay is another story for another time...

Concerts were making a comeback here until omicron hit, even managed to have a few gigs with my band. But will venues closing at 6 pm and no culture of afternoon gigs here, there's no chance at the moment. Good thing we have good cross country skiing conditions at the moment.
Avatar 5:00am
Don in Tampere:

I used to work for the (no longer existing) chemical company Hoechst, and the first thing any of the top managers would ask when we came up with a new technology in research (like OLEDs, organic solar cells) was whether you could put it onto plastic. While there are good arguments for plastic foils in some cases, their only interests were the D-Mark signs in their eyes.
There's been a fair amount of work done on moving away from petroleum-based to bio-derived and compostable plastics, with some promising results. I've been part of a project here in Finland that includes looking at some of these materials for use in electronics. If anyone really wants to nerd out, you can read about it here: www.ecotronics.fi...

As for mask wearing, it was maybe 10% at first show, half at the second, 90% at the last 2. That tracked the politics of the audience more than their age (here it maps in a different way than in the US)

@Don: I'm in France, here anti-mask is prominent on both far-right and far-left. Opposition to vaccines adds the Green/Vegan constituency (nothing new there). I'm sadly out of touch with anarchists these days, but they're probably divided as a matter of principle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21am
Scott67:

Brian, doesn't influence the Show mate. But "TRASH CULT" is also a Record Store / Bar & Band Room. So doesn't stop Mick & I recording the TRASH CULT Show. Just the capacity limits make it unprofitable for the Bands. & 100% of ticket sales go to the Bands.

I think the greens here are mostly pro-science, but probably lots of the anti-vaxxers on the hippie side of things are vegan. But so are a lot of pro-science people. I think it's still mainly the right-wing here despite the odd alliances. A recent poll showed that most of the anti-vaxxers here also voted for the True Finns, and next in line were the Christian Democrat (who are a right-wing theocratic party here, nothing like the CDU in Germany) voters. If I recall correctly, the highest percentage of vaccine supporters was among green voters.

@Don, wow @ β€œvery weird alliances between neo-Nazis with crystal hippies etc.” Not totally unfamiliar here in the U.S. β€” when I listen to the QAnon Anonymous podcast, which investigates all the latest Q madness and its deep origins, it becomes clear that many of the new-age types are trending rightwards in recent years, at least in most ways.

Interesting that vegans don't want eggs to be robbed for vaccines but are quite willing to let possibly millions of people die if a vaccine for a deadly disease (think polio or smallpox for example) is not available.

I should qualify that: some vegans. I don't think that's a majority of vegans.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40am

@Don: their objection isn't usually to the "robbing" of eggs (though some do oppose that), but to the fact that the amount of eggs required for vaccine production requires industrial poultry farms
