A friend who has moved to Cali was working there for a few weeks, so another friend and I flew out from NYC for a long weekend. We decided that a good way to see more of the town than just downtown was to find a gaming store and take public transport out to it. So two El lines and a bus got us to a pretty nice, active gaming store somewhere on the North Side, past Wrigley. We got some dice, chatted with the staff, and eventually asked if there was a decent bar nearby. They gave us directions, we walked over there, and had a super fun afternoon at a gay sports bar on a college football Saturday. Really nice day on the town!

Sent him to college for three years, but it was the Depression, and they could afford to send only her. But he and my "aunt" remained close all their lives even though they rarely lived close to each other. I went to visit her in Marin Co. in the early nineties and met Peter while I was there. She was a very, very interesting person and extremely kind to me all my life.

I think his assessment of the current situation in America of what he calls a “corporate coup d’etat” as part of his Inverted Totalitarianism theory is the most accurate I’ve heard yet. Hedges is a rarified journalist par excellence who’s exhibited in droves the requisite fearlessness to speak real truth to power. That's where he was friends with Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday and gave her his stash of pot to hang onto when he was drafted only find after he failed the physical that it was all gone ... He was a scenester. But mainly dabbled in both politics and art. Did some arranging, some poems, some stories, some paintings. But mainly waited tables and was on the scene. Back in the Village by the fifties. Met my mom in '59 at Minetta's Tavern on Macdougall.

It’s sort of reclamation of his genius and political prescience after decades during which his outsized reputation in mainstream circles for drug-crazed cavorting and outlandish antics took up all the air in the room. Some really good interviews with and essays by the author at his website: peterrichardson.blogspot.com... I agree with the others, Handy. There’s some vignettes in there about your Dad and his times that would be interesting to flesh out. Speaking of the Village of those days, and then walking it these, is as disorienting as being dropped in from another planet.

	♥ 11:52am Zinn The Mood: Thanks, Jonny…though I have to confess it pains me to send any click traffic, commercial or otherwise, Amazon’s way. Will have to look into it. Have to admit the latest book I read on him I enjoyed immensely was E. Jean Carroll’s. Was at an amazing, off-the-beaten path, used bookstore (housed in a refurbished barn) deep in the woods (literally) upstate NY and found a few. Looked pretty salacious at first and was headstand for that reason. But did a surprisingly good job filling in some of the details of his personal relationships throughout his life. Agreed, RevRab. Mark Twain-esque often, in his defense of the maligned and disgust with dishonest brokers and corrupt politicians. I also agree with Richardson that most often it’s his letters that I find most hilarious and insightful. Was once reading The Proud Highway in a cafe during lunch laughing out loud every now and then when a woman nearby cracked a smile and asked what I was reading, saying that she needed something to do the same for her. Wasn’t sure if she’d get the same belly laughs I was from reading his famously precise descriptions of what he planned to do to unscrupulous editors, profiteers and the like.

	♥ 9:14am Handy Haversack: luka, I was thinking about your dice still being in Chicago, which reminded me of the last time I was there. A friend who has moved to Cali was working there for a few weeks, so another friend and I flew out from NYC for a long weekend. We decided that a good way to see more of the town than just downtown was to find a gaming store and take public transport out to it. So two El lines and a bus got us to a pretty nice, active gaming store somewhere on the North Side, past Wrigley. We got some dice, chatted with the staff, and eventually asked if there was a decent bar nearby. They gave us directions, we walked over there, and had a super fun afternoon at a gay sports bar on a college football Saturday. Really nice day on the town!

	♥ 10:14am Handy Haversack: Peter I have actually met a few times. Yeah, TomDash. Their mother and my dad were cousins. When my dad was orphaned, her parents took him in for a while. Sent him to college for three years, but it was the Depression, and they could afford to send only her. But he and my "aunt" remained close all their lives even though they rarely lived close to each other. I went to visit her in Marin Co. in the early nineties and met Peter while I was there. She was a very, very interesting person and extremely kind to me all my life.

I think his assessment of the current situation in America of what he calls a “corporate coup d’etat” as part of his Inverted Totalitarianism theory is the most accurate I’ve heard yet. Hedges is a rarified journalist par excellence who’s exhibited in droves the requisite fearlessness to speak real truth to power. That's where he was friends with Louis Armstrong and Billie Holliday and gave her his stash of pot to hang onto when he was drafted only find after he failed the physical that it was all gone ... He was a scenester. But mainly dabbled in both politics and art. Did some arranging, some poems, some stories, some paintings. But mainly waited tables and was on the scene. Back in the Village by the fifties. Met my mom in '59 at Minetta's Tavern on Macdougall.

It’s sort of reclamation of his genius and political prescience after decades during which his outsized reputation in mainstream circles for drug-crazed cavorting and outlandish antics took up all the air in the room. Some really good interviews with and essays by the author at his website: peterrichardson.blogspot.com... I agree with the others, Handy. There’s some vignettes in there about your Dad and his times that would be interesting to flesh out. Speaking of the Village of those days, and then walking it these, is as disorienting as being dropped in from another planet.

	♥ 11:52am Zinn The Mood: Thanks, Jonny…though I have to confess it pains me to send any click traffic, commercial or otherwise, Amazon’s way. Will have to look into it. Have to admit the latest book I read on him I enjoyed immensely was E. Jean Carroll’s. Was at an amazing, off-the-beaten path, used bookstore (housed in a refurbished barn) deep in the woods (literally) upstate NY and found a few. Looked pretty salacious at first and was headstand for that reason. But did a surprisingly good job filling in some of the details of his personal relationships throughout his life. Agreed, RevRab. Mark Twain-esque often, in his defense of the maligned and disgust with dishonest brokers and corrupt politicians. I also agree with Richardson that most often it’s his letters that I find most hilarious and insightful. Was once reading The Proud Highway in a cafe during lunch laughing out loud every now and then when a woman nearby cracked a smile and asked what I was reading, saying that she needed something to do the same for her. Wasn’t sure if she’d get the same belly laughs I was from reading his famously precise descriptions of what he planned to do to unscrupulous editors, profiteers and the like.
