I also helped slightly less punky singer Beverly Sills (shopping for her husband), character actor Jack Gilford (looking specifically for Burlington dress socks, but we only had them in white athletic style) and Calvert DeForest — the guy who played Larry "Bud" Melman on Letterman (very short and kinda odd).

To NOT say hi to Al "Grandpa" Lewis or Larry Storch on the street is downright rude. It's positively creepy to NOT acknowledge them in person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Gene C: Arnold Stang is my favorite celeb sighting ever! I was not going to let that go unheeded!

@LesleyK @myron feld: But we sell only one bowling shoe. What's more punk rock than mismatched footwear?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm

My friend lived a block away from Al Lewis' Italian restaurant in the Village, so I'd see him pretty regularly just talking to folks on the street, and of course I'd say hi too.

I flew with Herbert Hoover, but the Secret Service kept us out of the front section that he had to himself. I've met various other politicians. I met Buster Crabbe at Grossinger's, but was too young to get swimming lessons from him. Mother might've had me say hello to some musicians when I was very young; I did say hello to Sha Na Na before they were big, and were playing my high school.

Jean Shepherd I met and talked to at WPRB. That impressed my date, but I think I put Shep off.

I was the mover behind the scenes in Howard Stern's run for governor, but wasn't in close touch with him.

Said hello to Jimmy Dean when our friend Norman Levine (trumpeter Norman King) at brunch spotted him at another table.

My friend Bob Blumetti got to meet a lot more celebs working at Barnes & Noble.
