Alan Ladd is one of my fave radio voices. I think he's perfectly deadpan, in a good "noir" sort of way. Plus: he could almost put you to sleep, it's so low and lovely!

Good to see you, Mr. Fab & HyperDose!

What about the time travel caper from last week?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:04pm

I wonder if 7 was already being rented by a character from a competing Christian Program?

I love that story from last week.

I do like that The Great Torino's theme music is the same as Dan Holiday's

Nice to see you, Feldy! We actually did an obituary / biography of Alan Ladd Jr. last week! He had a pretty wild career.

That accent sounds suspect. Maybe Eastern European.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm

Again, Torino's stage music (in the background) is the same as the theme music for Box 13.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

I'm almost 100% sure that the actor doing this accent had no connection to any ethnicity sort of similar to what he's impersonating.

Austin Rich:

This is the second time that Dan has been called to investigate something that happened at a show. (Once at a radio show performance, and now at a stage magician's show.) I have a feeling that Dan should just assume that if he's invited to a show, that it's probably going to lead to something TERRIBLE.
  6:12pm
Ellen Lovebug:

Thank you! And I just got your new postcard! Her voice sounds familiar.
  6:12pm
Listener Robert:

A version of the Bullet Catch was done on "Lost" -- except I was the only one AFAIK who realized it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Austin Rich:

I think Houdini did a version of the bullet catch trick too, if I remember correctly? I can't remember exactly how his version of it went, but I have a vague memory that there was some twist on it.
  6:13pm
Ellen Lovebug:

@Listener Robert when was that? I'm trying to remember. Been a long time since I watched Lost.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Austin Rich:

You can hear some surface noise on this episode, more than you usually hear on an episode of Box 13. I think the particular disc that is being used was just hard to improve beyond this.
  6:17pm
Ellen Lovebug:

This is deeply disturbing
  6:17pm
Listener Robert:

@Ellen, in season 1 when Shannon appears to shoot at Locke. She shoots into the ground first to show the gun is loaded with real shot. Slow the replay down enough, and you can see that JUST BEFORE Said tackles Snannon, she moves her aim away, and then the shot appears to graze Locke on the WRONG SIDE of the head. He claps his hand to his head; his hand conceals a sharp object with which he simulates a bullet graze.
Avatar 6:17pm
HyperDose:

That accent is hilarious
  6:17pm
Listener Robert:

Said was the only character at the scene who wasn't in on it.
  6:19pm
Ellen Lovebug:

@Listener Robert, wow. I honestly did not know that.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

Lt. Kling is starting to become a regular, and considering how often he and Dan run into each other, he should either be MORE suspicious of Holiday, or should just immediately ask him to lead the investigation, knowing how successful he usually is. It's odd that Kling's memory regarding Dan's role in previous cases is so short term.
  6:19pm
Listener Robert:

Of course you didn't, Ellen. I'm the only one who noticed these things. See users.bestweb.net...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 6:21pm

I saw Penn & Teller do the bullet catch in their live show. They made sure we all knew how many people have died doing the trick.

  6:38pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I didn't know any of this history. Yay, Detroit!
Avatar 6:41pm
HyperDose:

This is fascinating!
  6:42pm
Listener Robert:

"Lost" was a work by two detective show writers -- Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse -- to be a mystery show that posed as a sci-fi/fantasy adventure show. The catch was that the audience was to be the detective, and most didn't even realize they were supposed to be.

Damon practiced magic as a teenager -- did a trick for me and other friends of his father. That hidden Bullet Catch was part of a sequence that included another disguised dangerous magic trick: the Coffin Escape, by Boone. Most viewers of the show thought he was dead and that it was a ghost of him who later visited Locke.
Avatar 6:46pm
Mr Fab:

I take it that these disks preceded tape, and tape made the discs obsolete?

I've never even heard of transcription discs. This is intriguing. I'm amazed that you have such detailed knowledge of them.
  6:47pm

@Listener Robert, that's fascinating. If I had the time, I'd rewatch with that vantage point.

There are a ton of records out there that claim to have Rhysling's songs on them, or bands doing versions of them. I couldn't possibly include them all here, but if this sparks your imagination, I suggest looking them up... and even looking for the original short story, which talks about even more songs that don't show up in any radio version.

Good old Jimmy Legs.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:37pm
Austin Rich:

I like how you could sort of hear the actor blow the line, but they just keep going. Clearly, this show was done live, where they had to manage all the voices and FX in one take.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:38pm
Austin Rich:

In the original story, Rhysling plays an accordion. In the radio adaptations, he usually plays guitar.
  7:38pm
Charles:

wow, Jimmy Legs Live!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:39pm
Austin Rich:

For this show (and X-Minus One, later), all the guitar and singing was by Tom Glazer, who adapted them from the descriptions in the story.
Avatar 7:40pm
Mr Fab:

that wiki article sez "The story features several other partial songs and a number of titles attributed to Rhysling. These are...Since the Pusher Met My Cousin (title only)
That Red-Headed Venusburg Gal (title only)
Keep Your Pants On, Skipper (title only)
A Space Suit Built for Two (title only)...

Several are described as sexually explicit songs excluded.."

Sure would like to hear those.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
Austin Rich:

The actor playing Rhysling is Kenneth Williams, who plays the character as being from the Ozarks, not far from Heinlein's hometown in Missouri.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

CBS Radio Workshop actually aired a version of the story with a script written by Draper Lewis and Robert Heinlein. But I think that's the only version that Heinlein every had anything to do with.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

Mr. Fab: we should write our own versions of those songs for the next Sheena's release.
  7:43pm
Listener Robert:

In the original, there was no such blast. Instead he took a shortcut, looking where he shouldn't have without eye protection.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Austin Rich:

I forgot to mention this in Dimestore Revelations, but the story was the first Science Fiction story published in The Saturday Evening Post. Probably because it seems like it's more about a singing Hobo from outer space, and seems less like Sci-Fi, capital letters.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

These were on NBC. Pretty good budgets there.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Austin Rich:

Heinlein says that she pinched the title, "The Green Hills of Earth," (for both the song and the story). According to Heinlein, the short story "Shambleau" by C. L. Moore (first published in 1933) was the source. In it, a character sings / hums a songs called "The Green Hills of Earth." Another story by the same author credits the song to a performer, Rose Robertson. The song also appears in a further short story by the same authors.
  7:49pm
Listener Robert:

"Feel the pain in your shit"?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Austin Rich:

Heinlein used to tell stories of a machinist he met in WWII who was blind and had a perfect safety record. Tony also played accordion, like Rhysling did in the story. Tony was identified as Tony Damico in Heinlein's biography.

Given the stories we've been getting on Dimension X, we're starting to get a "left of center" political perspective. Especially given that only a couple people adapted these scripts for almost all the shows, I think we can certainly start to suspect who on the Dimension X staff were pushing that agenda.
