Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 4, 2022 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

If you've never seen "Footlight Parade" movie or at least the By A Waterfall segment, you should treat yourself. It's wonderful, "looney tunes" in its own way, Hollywood craziness of the period. The extravagance today is in action and tech-effects budgets. This was something else amazing, people and nuts-and-bolts-wise, to make us wonder at it being conceived, signed off on and executed.
Part of the nuttiness is that in the movie's story, the massive changing sets and waters and performing horde are ostensibly doing their whole thing live onstage in a theater.

What bothers me is that if the average adult just starts singing, even in the company of friends, they'll tell hir how awful it sounds and to stop right away -- which I think is wrong, the AVERAGE person's singing isn't so bad to my ears -- and yet there've been all these people who RECORD AND SELL RECORDS and sound like heavy breathing set to music (Bing Crosby), whining set to music (Neil Young), and so on. (I won't even get into acknowledged bad singers who sound charming because they have a good gimmick like Dylan or Bingo Gazingo.) The world is so grossly unfair like that.

Listener Robert-I think it feeds on itself (the more people get to sing, the better their singing gets, the more inhibited, the worse it will sound when they try it). In general, amateurism in music went by the wayside from the days people had a piano in their house, leaned to play classics for friends and had sing alongs with them.

Yes, doctor, that positive feedback is a big factor. But it doesn't explain it all. It may be that recording killed singing, or music generally, for most people. But then why didn't the printing press make us start to judge AVERAGE writing as CRAP instead of just average?

I have a friend who's a real music junkie, worked in the music biz (ASCAP, concert producing), just loves to listen. HE CAN'T SING 2 NOTES CONSECUTIVELY! I like to hear him sing, but I'm sure he's quite inhibited. It's an interesting phenomenon-obviously, the neural connection from his ear to his brain are working incredibly well. However, the neural connection from his brain to his vocal cords has something amiss. (back in college, when I'd play sing-around-the-campfire guitar, we found the perfect song he could shout in front of anyone and it was great-Lou Reeds's Sweet Jane. Worked like a charm!)
