I have watched Altman's "Popeye" four or five times, trying to make sense of it. Haven't succeeded yet. Maybe it will hit me over the head one day. Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall are both great, but the movie built around them seems like a bad-fitting pair of pants.

I went with the easy obvious surmise that Altman was trying to capture or adapt crazy air and energies of cartoon, but it didn't get there. And what he did create wasn't its own effective new brand of different-world dynamic, either.
