Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from April 19, 2022 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Hey Austin!
MKUltra was the CIA's infamous brain-washing program. And a mind as dirty as mine could use some washing.

Twas cold and rainy here in New Jersey last night and this morning. Might hit 70 degrees by Friday. The temperature seesaws back and forth. That's spring in the Northeast.

Howdy, xapnomapcase1! Always a pleasure to see you in the chat.

And Krys O, and Mr. Fab! Thanks for popping in!

Austin Rich:

This cassette tape was released as "Mini-Mutations" and in the notes, mentions horridus and Derek. But the original session was MKU and Derek together.

The cassette this appeared on is out of print now, until I can source for C-40s to make more.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

For this session, Derek was playing a cello, run through plenty of FX. horridus was using a rack of modular synths. And I had a MicroGranny and two CDJs, with samples loaded into all of them. There's more to this session, but this section works the best, I think. (Derek's solo set during this session was also amazing.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:09pm
Austin Rich:

Nice to see you in the chat, Aitch!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:11pm
Austin Rich:

Since MKU didn't keep going, and the recordings didn't really wind up getting used anywhere, some of the sessions have turned up as early Mini-Mutations releases, with horridus credited on them. Someday I'll do a proper collection of all the MKU stuff, and release it on a USB drive, or something.
Avatar 9:12pm
Mr Fab:

What film is this from?
Avatar 9:12pm
Mr Fab:

i would never have guessed that's a cello.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
Austin Rich:

It's from an old episode of Suspense, if I remember correctly. (The radio show.) I'd have to dig around in my files to see if i can find the exact episode.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Austin Rich:

Derek did some Cello work for Unwound, and performs in a number of groups as a performer. But his solo stuff is pretty incredible. I've engineered live performances for him a few times. He can play straight up cello, but also likes the really weird stuff, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Krys O.:

Nice ambiance for puttering around the kitchen and cleaning up.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:18pm
Austin Rich:

I always said that MKU (and Mini-Mutations) are more soundscapes and ambience than "music." But what is music? Arranged Sound, setting a mood, I guess?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Austin Rich:

I would occasionally say we made "Audio Essays." I still describe Mid-Valley Mutations / Mini-Mutations that way.

I remember hearing the term “audio art” and wondering what’s the difference between that and music?

I think I've played it before when you've booked me. It's a small, red box, that I load with samples, and I can play them back at different speeds, or with FX on them. It's a cool little thing, made by Bastl.

I agree :) I went to one Ghost House, and I went there for New Year's Eve, and for one other meal prior to Easter. If I make it tomorrow, it will be my first concert, per se, since Fe-BREW-ary, which I coordinated at Rooted Space:
FE-BREW-ARY: FREE, ALL-AGES experimental music show (7pm-10:30pm), with FREE kombucha & jun (6pm-7pm). EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO JAM, BEATBOX, & CYPHER! Headliners: Curtis Rochambeau as [view], whose home-made noise devices, Crustaceans, inspired this whole event, and who is also the visual artist of this poster; and Tethys (Francis Atrus). Other amazing performers will include My Burning Bush/ William R Harris; Obstacle Intercourse (Geoffrey from @Tawas Melek); Unbeknownst (on the one-of-a-kind, delightful Penguin Theremin!). and Eugene Difficult Music Ensemble c/o Lee Sparks PembletonLee Sparks Pembleton. I will debut at 7 as Driftwood Dryad, in a meditation honoring trees, on driftwood reverently modified by Casey Chittenden Jones of Driftwood Orchestra.... And at 10:05 I'll frolic a lyric with Try-Cypher-Atops, our fam jam of cyphers from Page 3 poetry, to beat-boxing by Francis Atrus and homemade beats by Will Minz. I want to make some audio art out of mangled bits of Eagles songs, and dedicate it to Mr. Fab.
  10:22pm

I know I've mentioned it before, but I too shared your passion for Environments albums :)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Austin Rich:

This piece we did with Doug, where he mixed us and gave us the TINIEST bit of direction, was probably our high point, as a group. And I guess the writing was on the wall; I think we only did a could more sessions together, after this. But we had some good chemistry, for sure. I invited horridus to join us today, but I'm not sure if they are still online. they weren't really much on the internet, even when we were playing together.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Austin Rich:

Those Environments albums are great. Just wonderfully thoughtful albums.
  10:23pm
Ellen Lovebug:

I have to get back to work, just wanted to say I really enjoy MKUltramegaphone, and I'm sorry you can't join us for the show tomorrow. It's like a bookend; the first real concert I'll see in the pandemic era features Curtis, the lead act of the last concert I coordinated at Root Space pre-pandemic.

If I remember correctly, that is a chimney cleaning brush, that he bought new for the purposes of attaching a contact mic to it, and running that through FX. He plucks it, and has it mounted on a board, that he can tap on, etc. Lots of options.
