A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Just to chime in with my thoughts on when we did this interview, it was so exciting. Austin is the REAL Maxhead, I'm a noob, but, still, what a delight and honor to be able to speak with these fellows. If I remember correctly, I'm pretty quiet during this because (a) Austin always has all the good questions and (b) Brian, Steve, and Michael really took off running with chat between the three of them and it was so fun to just be there listening to them talk.

Also, while I edited out most of it, other producers were trying to contact Brian during this conversation, and he keeps ignoring his calls. If you google Brian Frankish, you might understand why he was being called so much.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Austin Rich:

All three of these gents were so generous with their time, and from the interviews, really wanted to show us how much Max still influenced them and their work. There were props and signs and other stuff all over the place in all of their offices, and Steve and Michael still meet up for beers on a regular basis.

re: The Samples. When I was editing this show, I would listen to it, make some notes about what would make a good sample after the comment, and then scurry to find something that fit into flow. It's a very slow process, but I like the collage style in the end.
  🎸 9:29pm
Heather Z:

It really came out great, Austin. I know it was a ton of work but you did, as always, an excellent edit!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
Austin Rich:

George R.R. Martin was another writer that worked on Max Headroom, who had come off of The Twilight Zone with Michael, and was supposed to write two episodes. One was shelved, because it was TOO controversial. The second was supposed to the the Season Two "Christmas" episode, but the show was canceled before it could be made. And then he moved on to work on Beauty & The Beast after that.
Avatar 9:30pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

was that controversial one "Theora's Tale"? where she was kidnapped?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

Michael keeps promising that George will talk to us about Max, but doesn't really want to talk about GoT stuff these days. Plus: he's a little busy right now. But I guess George does want to talk to us about his role on Max, someday.

Apparently, George's controversial episode was "Mr. Meat." I tried to get some info about "Theora's Tale," but I don't think there was ever more than a name at that stage.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

If people don't know what I'm talking about: google Rick from Max Headroom, and then Morpheus from The Matrix.

Avatar 9:35pm
ImaginosBuzzardoDesdinova:

Can you imagine if someone actually produced Porky's Landing and Missile Mike?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
Austin Rich:

I actually had a text exchange with Michael today, who was interested in joining us at first. But as it happens, not only is tomorrow is birthday, but he's pitching a new TV show at <network redacted> tomorrow. So he's a little busy tonight.

I think all three of them were a little afraid to really answer this, while being recorded. But given some of the stuff that pops up in different episodes, it's hard to think that they weren't more aware of some of the odd things in the background here and there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:45pm

I think what Michael is talking about here in coded language: there were probably two kinds of scripts. One for the censors, and one of the crew making the show.

While the Ultravox and the Art of Noise videos merely had Max connections, the Divine video is in an episode of Max Headroom, and "The River" is in the UK Telefilm. (Along with another, upcoming Divine video.) There's more music in Max Headroom, but I could only fit six picks in this show.

I believe Walk was in the Body Banks episode and was playing when Rik took Edison and Mel to see Blank Reg.

We're gonna go a little long tonight. Which should be okay, as there is no one on after me. But I wanna make sure I fit in all of this stuff, and why not?

@Imaginos: "Walk"? Hmmmm... did I miss that?

Heather, I'm sorry I never made it at Halloween. What fun that must have been. I liked the River song.

Ellen, I've heard ELVIRA, omg, I love her, performs at Knott's Scary Farm at Halloween! What a dream it would be to see her anywhere.

For years I was going crazy trying to figure out this video based on a clip I saw on the Max Headroom music video music show. I just remembered something about Scottish guy swinging a claymore. (It was Jesse Rae - Over the Sea.)

Yesssssss! She just came out with an autobiography last year and I highly recommend it. She's so funny and personable and a great story teller. And she talks a lot about coming out, too, and it's very very cool.

Good night, Scott67! Thank you for tuning in!

@Odvo: I'll have to check that out! I'm sure there's more video references in Max that I still haven't managed to piece together.

@Otis: glad you're enjoying it! This is sort of like what the show that Heather and I do is like to listen to. But it takes a LONG time to produce each conversation.
