	🎸 ♥ 9:26pm Austin Rich: I've been to Hawaii once. I was dating a girl with rich parents, and they took the whole family to Hawaii once a year, partners included. It was a weird resort, and not exactly super fun. But we drank and sat on a beach and it was fun in that way. But I would have never gone if I was paying. On the last day we got to do a little site-seeing that wasn't on beach, and I liked that better.

	🎸 ♥ 9:34pm Austin Rich: This Yma Sumac record was the other record I brought back from Chicago.
	9:35pm Mr Fab: Austin, no Don Ho, Martin Denny, etc? Haven't been in over 20 years, but yeah, had to hit the lounge entertainment. Also, snorkling north of Honolulu is a MUST. Water so warm and clear you dont hardly need to even stick your head under water to see bright tropical fishies. And native tiki carvers. Got one I saw the dude make before my very eyes that I brought back.
	🎸 ♥ 9:37pm Austin Rich: I got one carved Tiki dude before I left. And we did some snorkling / diving off the beach. It was pretty fun. But the folks I was with really just wanted to drink cocktails in deck chairs and didn't do much. I largely read on the beach and walk a LOT, trying to see what I could find on foot. Fun, but again, I would have done it different.
	🎸 ♥ 9:38pm Austin Rich: Martin Denny is coming. I don't have any Don Ho records, but I should have downloaded some! I totally forgot. I sort of threw this show together on the fly.
	9:39pm Geoff-U: I was wondering if that was Yma Sumac. Are there any tiki bars in Salem, out of curiosity?
	9:41pm Mr Fab: Hmm, yeah. Too bad, Austin. There's also the Bishop Museum, and just driving all around Oahu is cool - massive surf break up on the North Shore where you can watch the real daredevils. Sounds like the folks you were with have probably gone to Hawaii so often they've done all that stuff, and to them, when they go it's just like hangin out by their backyard pool.
	🎸 ♥ 9:47pm Austin Rich: Yeah, that Hawaii trip was "another family vacation" to them. But I did make it to a place the Mark Twain visited when he was in Hawaii, and did some other driving around. (After much coaxing.) But even my partner wasn't as excited about what was there as I was. So it goes... I've met a much more fun person since then.
	9:48pm Mr Fab: This Tito es muy frio! Lucky I got to see El Maestro live at the Hollywood Bowl not long before he died.

	🎸 ♥ 9:49pm Austin Rich: The "Hits" Da Bossa Nova record is one I bought from a co-worker, in a lot of their records, that they were getting rid of. They decided to stop collecting vinyl. I was happy to take everything from them, and even more shocked at how well kept they were, and how well curated they were. That might have been the best "bang for your buck" lot of records I ever picked up.

	9:57pm Ellen Lovebug: Having grown up there, I can vouch Chicago has some primo used record stores. I basically grew up at Second-Hand Tunes, though I also went to Rolling Stone
	🎸 ♥ 9:57pm Austin Rich: I used to work at The Velveteria (I believe I've mentioned it in the chat before), and they INSISTED that we could only play records with women on the cover, looking at the camera, in island dress. It wasn't a bad rule to follow when picking records.

	🎸 ♥ 9:58pm Austin Rich: I can usually find an interesting record store, in almost any city, if put to the challenge. (I can usually find something.) But Chicago was OVERLOAD. Every store we visited had TONS of great stuff. Too much to choose.

	🎸 ♥ 9:59pm Kat in Chicago: A lot of stores I used to go to here are gone, but there's plenty still, and new ones open more often than you'd expect.

	🎸 ♥ 10:00pm Austin Rich: We visited Chicago in 2016, before the election. I can't remember the names offhand (would have to check my journal), but they were all great!
	🎸 ♥ 10:00pm Austin Rich: The Velveteria was in PDX for a while, and I worked there, and helped Carl & Karen make a DVD, at one point, of all their TV clips. They were very fun to work with. But PDX wasn't their style, so they moved.
	🎸 ♥ 10:01pm Kat in Chicago: Not sure if the Alley is still around, but if so, it's a shadow of its former self. That Clark/Belmont corner area changed a LOT, and not for the better.

	10:03pm Ellen Lovebug: I distinctly remember stopping at The Alley on the way to the midnight show of Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Biograph on a date in high school and if I remember correctly one of the male companions got his ear pierced there. Though that was eons ago and there might have been more than one stop
	🎸 ♥ 10:04pm Austin Rich: My friend Ash, who we stayed with in Chicago, basically had stories of how it all used to be better. We had fun, but you could tell Ash felt like something was gone.

	10:05pm Mr Fab: Nice, Ellen! We're planning on going to Cabo, southern tip of Baja, this xmas. The snorkling looks pretty spectacular there.

	10:07pm Mr Fab: that was George Cates' one and only exotica record, and it's excellent. One of the few records featuring the rare early electronic keyboard the Novachord.

	10:18pm Mr Fab: Ha, I had so many of these rekkids on vinyl, including this one. Yep, always got comments. By the '90s exotica/lounge records were like weeds. Always cheap, so you could very quickly build up a bachelor pad-worthy collection in no time.
	🎸 ♥ 10:19pm Austin Rich: Totally, Mr. Fab. As you can hear from the skipping, all of them authentic thrift store finds!
	🎸 ♥ 10:20pm Austin Rich: As a not exactly wealthy person, I don't have a huge budget for records. So I used to just buy $5 worth of thrift store finds and that would be my Saturday night sometimes. Some finds were better than others.
	🎸 ♥ 10:21pm Austin Rich: But I haven't been any kind of record shopping (except online) since around March of 2020.
	10:22pm Mr Fab: Sheena's: home of the Lounge Revival REVIVAL. After all, we are now as far removed from the '90s lounge revival as it was from the original lounge era.

	10:40pm Heather: Not to be that guy but Steve was Martin's landlord. And I so vaguely know Martin! But I am such a fan and he sure did us a favor introducing us to Steve. Sweet, smart, interesting men, the both of them.
	10:41pm Mr Fab: Don't think I can make it this year, but Sheena's own DJ Shangri-La will be spinning at Tiki Oasis in San Diego this year.

The only book I can find on there for sale is sold out. We should probably tell him again his books aren't easy to find in the US. A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

	🎸 ♥ 9:26pm Austin Rich: I've been to Hawaii once. I was dating a girl with rich parents, and they took the whole family to Hawaii once a year, partners included. It was a weird resort, and not exactly super fun. But we drank and sat on a beach and it was fun in that way. But I would have never gone if I was paying. On the last day we got to do a little site-seeing that wasn't on beach, and I liked that better.

	9:35pm Mr Fab: Austin, no Don Ho, Martin Denny, etc? Haven't been in over 20 years, but yeah, had to hit the lounge entertainment. Also, snorkling north of Honolulu is a MUST. Water so warm and clear you dont hardly need to even stick your head under water to see bright tropical fishies. And native tiki carvers. Got one I saw the dude make before my very eyes that I brought back.
	🎸 ♥ 9:37pm Austin Rich: I got one carved Tiki dude before I left. And we did some snorkling / diving off the beach. It was pretty fun. But the folks I was with really just wanted to drink cocktails in deck chairs and didn't do much. I largely read on the beach and walk a LOT, trying to see what I could find on foot. Fun, but again, I would have done it different.

	9:41pm Mr Fab: Hmm, yeah. Too bad, Austin. There's also the Bishop Museum, and just driving all around Oahu is cool - massive surf break up on the North Shore where you can watch the real daredevils. Sounds like the folks you were with have probably gone to Hawaii so often they've done all that stuff, and to them, when they go it's just like hangin out by their backyard pool.
	🎸 ♥ 9:47pm Austin Rich: Yeah, that Hawaii trip was "another family vacation" to them. But I did make it to a place the Mark Twain visited when he was in Hawaii, and did some other driving around. (After much coaxing.) But even my partner wasn't as excited about what was there as I was. So it goes... I've met a much more fun person since then.

	🎸 ♥ 9:49pm Austin Rich: The "Hits" Da Bossa Nova record is one I bought from a co-worker, in a lot of their records, that they were getting rid of. They decided to stop collecting vinyl. I was happy to take everything from them, and even more shocked at how well kept they were, and how well curated they were. That might have been the best "bang for your buck" lot of records I ever picked up.

	🎸 ♥ 10:00pm Austin Rich: The Velveteria was in PDX for a while, and I worked there, and helped Carl & Karen make a DVD, at one point, of all their TV clips. They were very fun to work with. But PDX wasn't their style, so they moved.

Though that was eons ago and there might have been more than one stop

	10:18pm Mr Fab: Ha, I had so many of these rekkids on vinyl, including this one. Yep, always got comments. By the '90s exotica/lounge records were like weeds. Always cheap, so you could very quickly build up a bachelor pad-worthy collection in no time.

	🎸 ♥ 10:20pm Austin Rich: As a not exactly wealthy person, I don't have a huge budget for records. So I used to just buy $5 worth of thrift store finds and that would be my Saturday night sometimes. Some finds were better than others.
