Power Of The Dog was inappropriately slow moving and filled with less than stellar performances. Belfast was the complete opposite. Every moment mattered to the plot and the actors put 110% into their work.

And The Herbie Nichols Project did release albums with his music (Ben Allison, Frank Kimbrough, Herbie Nichols, Matt Wilson, Michael Blake, Ron Horton, Ted Nash, Tim Horner, Wycliffe Gordon), and individual members of the band also released Nichols music.

I've always liked The Dan as well, also more the earlier stuff, but even later stuff, solo stuff. Not sure why they elicit such strong responses either. The Eagles do this-I always liked them, the FMU boards get many angry responses if they get played (Matt Warwick for a while would play Don Henley's Heavy Metal every week at 11 AM, the chat board would go crazy, even Station Manager Ken got into the act, think he banned it in some way).

BOB, that Shellagh McDonald record sounds a lot like Judy Collins from her early 70s "Wildflowers" and "Whales and Nightingales" period on Elektra. Especially the arrangement.
Avatar 12:35pm
Bob Brainen:

Gerry that sounds apt. I thought Wildflowers was earlier than that. (?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
fred:

@doc: The fight about Heavy Metal was tongue in cheek at first, but got out of hand. There was a poll/auction during a marathon as to whether to keep or retire it, which Matt outmaneuvered by play Sammy Hagar's track instead. I think that's when Ken might have stepped in. Matt said he accidentally broke the record, which may well have been a white lie that allowed everyone involved to save face (and hopefully reflect on how that got this bad; I know some did, my mirror told me so)
  12:37pm
Gerry from Miami:

Anything by the prodigious Gary Burton is always welcome, BOB! A musician's musician! This early stuff on RCA earned him his notoriety, but didn't quite fit what the record company was looking for. His championing of the music of Carla Bley and his long associations with superstars like Chick Corea and Pat Metheny have made for some of the finest moments in jazz over the last 50+ years. Alas, he has retired from performing and lives about 50 miles away from me in the town I grew up in, Fort Lauderdale, FL .
  12:50pm
Gerry from Miami:

BOB, you are correct. Judy Collins released "Wildflowers" in 1967. "Whales and Nightingales" was from '70 and the album that featured Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns," titled "Judith," was from '75. By the way, Judy's arranger to whom I alluded was the great Joshua Rifkin

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm

Love Jelly Roll (my name is from his tune).
@Fred-I remember the whole thing (I only brought it up in response to Bob's question about bands that inspire extreme reactions). I actually looked forward to the Heavy Metal segment.
  12:59pm
Gerry from Miami:

BOB. thanks for running through most of the other playing partners that Gary Burton had during his stellar career. In 1974 or '75 I got to see him in Royce Hall at UCLA when ECM Records was presenting a traveling cavalcade of its label roster. Guitarist Terje Rypdal was also in that show.
Avatar 12:59pm
Bob Brainen:

dan, not sure. Like who?
  1:10pm
Gerry from Miami:

BOB, Wikipedia says Keith Reid wrote songs for French singer Michel Polnareff in '66 and Brit John Farnham in '86. He also issued two albums as the Keith Reid Project in 2008 and 2018, featuring artists like Southside Johnny and John Waite.
