Kicking around going to hear Alan Broadbent tonight (if there are tickets...). He's not that near, at the Deer Head Inn in the Poconos, about an hour and a half drive from my Centeral Joisey abode But do really like his playing, never seen him...
  1:02pm
Dean:

doctorjazz, I hope you go! I love Broadbent's playing, arranging, and composing. I've seen him more than a handful of times, even hired his trio c.2000 to play the public library where I worked. This is when he lived in Santa Monica.
  1:02pm
Dean:

He *might* even recognize the name if you tell him Dean from Whittier says hello.

Re: Bunty Pendleton. Seems odd that a label would contract an artist to cut one tune. There must be a story behind it.
Avatar 1:05pm
Bob Brainen:

Best guess: there was time left over on someone else's session? Prob. Pat Flowers.
Avatar 1:05pm
Bob Brainen:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm

Dean, I swear, I was just searching your email address, I knew you'd have something to say about Broadbent!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
wmfromD:

Bob, that makes sense.
  1:10pm
Dean:

RCA Victor took out an ad in an Oct. '46 issue of Billboard to promote, among others, Pat Flowers' recording of "Ain't That Just Like a Woman" b/w "Horizontal," which includes "vocal refrain by Bunty Pendleton. Almost as if Flowers tapped her to sing on that track. He sang the A side. Pendleton got a good deal of press as a lounge singer.
  1:10pm
Gerry from Miami:

Better late than never, BOB! Came on board during the Burritos tune. Looks like I will have to hit the Archives later to hear all the great numbers I missed today. Especially that Young/Crazy Horse cover by Mott the Hoople.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm
doctorjazz:

I love Broadbent's CD's, under his name and with Charlie Haden, as well. I've never had the opportunity to see him live, though. Partly will depend on whether there are still reservations available, partly how the missus is feeling (just got COVID booster #2 this morning). But, actually, going to see a show in NYC from here can take the same amount of time, driving or NJ Transit, parking, etc, not really any easier...)
  1:11pm
Dean:

I really hope you go, doc. Is he playing solo or in a trio? Drummer Billy Mintz alone is worth the trek.
