This was finally explained when one of the books put in a footnote "refers to the presence of garlic." Yes, to the Victorian mind, garlic made the food completely inedible.

	♥ 9:50am Doug Schulkind: I'm currently watching the gorgeous adaptation of Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend. The music is mostly a melange of syrupy "classical" and '50s and '60s Italian pop. The show is marvelous. Two young teenagers are the leads. Neither had been an actor before working on the series. Shockingly wonderful performances from both women.

The show is marvelous. Two young teenagers are the leads. Neither had been an actor before working on the series. Shockingly wonderful performances from both women.
