Galax has been home to a famous fiddlers convention since, I think, 1935!

@Webhamster Henry
Ernest Pops Stoneman was among the more famous autoharp practitioners from Galax. (My apologies. I think I selected an a cappella number for this set.)

Good morning, Gina the B!

Galax was definitely scouted for talent. The marathon recording sessions happened elsewhere, though. Galax was too rural. The electrical grid there was probably too unreliable in Galax.

Those early recordings have such distinctly American sounds. For me, they instantly paint a picture of an isolated Appalachian place, yet they're also one plugged in to the centuries-old ballad traditions of the UK, and to Africa, through the banjo. So homely and wide-ranging at the same time. For me personally, they're also wired into memories of my dad, who loved that kind of thing, and so to childhood itself.

That reminds me of the tune "Kansas City" from the musical Oklahoma:

I got to Kansas City on a Frid'y
By Sattidy I larned a thing or two
For up to then I didn't have an idy
Of whut the modren world was comin' to!
I counted twenty gas buggies goin' by theirsel's
Almost ev'ry time I tuk a walk.
'Nen I put my ear to a Bell Telephone and a strange womern started in to talk!
(Whut next! Yeak whut!)
Whut next?
Ev'rythin's up to date in Kansas City
They've gone about as fur as they c'n go!
They went and built a skyscrper seven stories high,
About as high as a buildin' orta grow.
Ev'rythin's like a dream in Kansas City,
It's better than a magic lantern show!
Y' c'n turn the radiator on whenever you want some heat.
With ev'ry kind o' comfort ev'ry house is all complete.
You c'n walk to privies in the rain and never wet your feet!
They've gone about as fur as they can go,
(Yes sir!)
They've gone about as fur as they can go!
Ev'rythin's up to date in Kansas City
They've gone about as fur as they can go!
They got a big theayter they call a burlesque.
Fer fifty cents you can see a dandy show.

It was interesting watching the 2 drummers. I'm sure different bands that have dual drummers organize it differently. One drummer had the backbeat, he was constantly playing rolls the whole time. The other had what you might call "accents", he's hit the syncopated beats, the "coloring" riffs. It was cool to watch/hear.
