Woods: I just sold my copy of "Neu II" back to the record store, I felt pretty disappointed by the filler/prank they played by filling Side 2 with versions of their single played at various wrong speeds. If I want to play a record at the wrong speed, I'll do it myself!
I know an American who went to Japan and took 20 people out to dinner and paid. and then every Japanese person made a line outside the restaurant and all bowed and said thank you
My dad worked for a Japanese bank. After my mother's funeral they lined up, each person shook our hands and bowed with the utmost discipline. A beautiful culture
Bloody love Yard Act, tho I told a record shop in Newcastle that their EP had sold out everywhere in the country and he rang me a few hours later saying heβd found a copy, I reserved it, not realising heβd hiked the price up to Β£15! For a 4 track ep on 12β vinyl, I paid it because Iβm too polite to complain but I go to a different record shop now
Had a sluggish start this AM. Thought I would have time for a shower, but had to deal with remote password reset which is a clusterfuck because I never got an expiration notice--lots easier to reset if the old one is still in force. Meh. Will sneak one in later; I feel foul.
I did swag selections before taxes β¦ but thatβs me. (Joe knows Iβve waited til the end of the year to finally make up my mind in the past)
Those last 3 songs β¦ as a sentimental sap, I approve
You have to take those last concerts with a grain of salt. How many performers announced that this will be their last concert, then a few years later, Boom! They're back on stage.
went the yahd act the other night up here in cambridgeβ¦ first show in longer than the covid, so out of practice and with the opener apparently having succumbed to the covid, yahd act came on early and i missed most of their set, but what i caught was very good and funny (singer really is like a MESmith reIncarnate). many friends thought they were like a GangO4 meets Fall evolutionβ¦ π·
Oh! Now I just remembered my dream! On Saturday afternoon I tried to watch the Sinfonia perf but my wi-fi was bad (basketball?) so I was disappointed. Then that night I dreamed I was at WFMU and Joe McGasko loaded a bunch of people in his car to drive around, and it was a vintage Range Rover covered in panels of grey felt a la Joseph Beuys. Wild! www.centrepompidou.fr...
There's DJ Stashu! And you were there, and you, and you. . .*L* (I had watched the first snip of "Do You Really Want to") For Beuys, felt is healing, so that is how I think of the station. . .
Not much family to speak of, Son Of Pantz. August Derleth did a lot of the estate and literary management after HPL's death. Even in the sixties, though, using HPL's name seems pretty culturally tone deaf (though he was a LOT less part of the cultural landscape then so maybe it just felt edgy-nerdy?).
And I'm saying that as someone who has read pretty much every word of his published fiction and poetry.

Greg Lake mustβve taken voice lessons from HP Lovecraftβs singer.
No way headcleaner, released in Nov 1984 was Dead or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" -- that was my 1984.(What played at the mall was not my concern.)

@Handy: If you haven't already, the Lovecraft Arts & Sciences bookstore/HPL nook in Providence is a fun visit. Also the proprietor was very realistic about his Big Issues when I asked how the operation squared them with everything else.
James, I don't think I have! Maybe it opened since the summer I lived in Providence? I got to look at some of his papers in the Hay library (and spent a few senses-disordered nights hanging out at his grave that summer).
There are some very interesting authors publishing cosmic-horror SF right now who are actively decolonizing Lovecraft and the Lovecraft story. I have been enjoying a few of them a lot. I mean, I will always treasure a lot of his writing, but as you say, the Big Issues are there and need to be confronted honestly.
I've played in ONE really satisfying Call of Cthulhu game. It's a tough one to run. It's all split-up-the-party action!

Gerry from Miami:
I have a dedicated shelf in my record collection for what I call "my 99-cent specials." These are records by artists who always seemed to end up in the "cut-out" bin at record shops. I have almost the entire catalog of bands like HP Lovecraft, Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach, Earth Opera, Tracy Nelson and Mother Earrh, Spanky and Our Gang, Rotary Connection et al. These bands are all worthy of our attention, but somehow got shoved to the back of the bus. Oh well, that's the record biz for you!
Seconding the modern cosmic-horror writer point. Folks are doing some good work with the IP in the RPG space outside Chaosium, too.
@Son of Pantz: Had a similar experience with Call of Cthulhu back in the day. Folks came into the game knowing too much and couldn't keep their characters properly new to the horrors. Too much munchkinism from their AD&D days.
Or maybe I am just saying it's a deep cut because it was buried in with some of my "favorite but heard least on the radio" tracks (except for the exceptional WLIR....soundtrack of my youth....).
I get you, Threemoons. Not trying to quibble -- I have four Joan Armatrading Lps. Glynn Johns said some great things about her in his very readable bio.
Blood moving with The Singles! Must text my best friend to turn on radio! And say our in-joke "18 Forever!"

Gerry from Miami:
@dday. As a matter of fact, I still have my copy of Lothar's record with "Standing on the Moon" that I bought at the Bassett Center Mall in El Paso, TX, in 1969.
Gerry in Miami@11:09 Yes, the time line of cut out bin. For me, this adjunct to the department stores and discount stores of my youth started in 1971 when MGM it seems kicked their entire rock catalog it seems into the junk pile.
OTOOH Mom is very ill. Maybe I should just roll the dice and hope I'm not picked for a case.

Hi Joe and All,
I have a quick break from work to check in. Single File looked especially great. The War and Hoodoo Gurus are two of my faves, sad I missed it and will have to leave again in a few minutes though the show looks great, Joe.

@Joe and listeners (for after-show entertainment purposes only) hereβs an all girl punk band doing Freebird. https://youtu.be/IGiwQp4kc98 I sent it to Kens email but I think he was so horrified by it that he stopped playing Freebird at the beginning of his show. Sorry but that go-goβs track reminded me
Enjoying the show, JoeMcG -- Was able to jump in around 11am today!I missed the REO Speedwagon, but that's OK -- that song always plays in my head whenever we run into each other at the station anyway. :)
I've rejected MANY versions of Freebird. It's a hard song to be dedicated to because 99% of the covers of it are incredibly faithful to the original, which is NOT what I want at all. That punk girl band Brendan. Mutley Chix? I,pressively bad but not very entertaining, and 7 damnminutes long
@-ΠΆΠ΅ΠΈ: Is there a similar cover culture for Stairway to Heaven? Now THAT would be a fun 3 hours, and you'd have plenty of time for bathroom/nap breaks! :D
I just got dismissed from jury duty this morning, thanks to being exposed to about a hundred students 2x per week, and getting weekly notices about some anon student in my class being plague-ridden.
Hey Handy! That's great. We haven't formally announced the tour dates yet, but a few have leaked... I'm still trying to nail down a couple of details, and then the big reveal.
Saw Tom Cochrane open for Hoodoo Gurus in Knoxville in 199-something. Maybe 80s even.
This song was so ubiquitous in Chattanooga in my high school days. It really evokes a sense of boredom for me.
