Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

Avatar 🎭 7:00pm Listener Gregory:

BB, I’m guessing you didn’t hear All Things Considered tonight, in which they interviewed the author of a new novel, “Let’s Not Do That Again,” a political-family comedy. One character stops working for his Congresswoman mother and decides to write a musical on the early life of Joan Didion. The author explained that he chose this because, “that would be the worst topic in the world for a musical.” I thought of you immediately!
Oh, and hello, darlings!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm WR:

Ha Ha. I assuming it was a hair metal musical that I hadn't heard yet.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Bronwyn and Broadway Babies!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Webhamster Henry:

There's a bit of a Carioca parody in this revue tune by Ronny Graham: jhhl.net...
  7:06pm Listener Gregory:

BB, try clicking your heels three times and repeating, “There’s no headphones like mine, there’s no headphones like mine.”
The volume level is great, btw.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:06pm WR:

sound good. good balance of mic and bed music.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm doctorjazz:

I'd like the voice up, a bit hard to follow the speech (my hearing is likely shot, though)
Avatar 🎭 7:08pm TonyR:

After listening to medson's stream earlier, I just figured it was another stream snafu.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:09pm doctorjazz:

(on the other hand, I can just turn the volume up here.)
  7:12pm P-90:

What do they know from Carioca in Nashville, anyway
  7:12pm Listener Gregory:

Your voice did drop a bit. @doctorj is not dead yet!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Webhamster Henry:

Ere-we in-hay e-the oney-may!
  7:12pm Listener Gregory:

The carioca may be a loser, but nothing is as bad as The Yam.
  7:13pm Listener Gregory:

Sorry, doctor!!! Not deaF yet!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:17pm doctorjazz:

I'm not Dead Yet, as Monte Python sang (hysterically in the show)...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Webhamster Henry:

You folks might like to check out the TV series Pennies From Heaven with Bob Hoskins, rather different from the Steve Martin / Bernadette Peters film version.
Avatar 🎭 7:20pm Listener Gregory:

I'm going to guess that Thanks for the Memories was a winner. And pray that Sweet Leilani wasn't.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Webhamster Henry:

Bob Hope hosted the Oscars forever, and could easily substitute the envelope.
  7:27pm Listener Gregory:

True, @webhamster, but could he take a punch? His jaw was certainly a huge target.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Webhamster Henry:

The Oscars Awawrds Dinner was a veritable Three Stooges show until the TV cameras came in.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Webhamster Henry:

"The Last Time I Saw Paris" was Kern's response to the Nazi takeover of Paris.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:32pm doctorjazz:

Hope did have the cutest nose...
  7:39pm KWilde:

Great show!
Avatar 🎭 7:39pm Listener Gregory:

I've Got a Gal should be nominated for *something*, but not an award.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:41pm WR:

I remember seeing the TV show the King sisters had in the mid 60s. Reading the Wikipedia page, see that one of the sisters was married to Alvino Rey and 2 of their grandsons are in Arcade Fire.

Der Bingle!
  7:47pm Listener Gregory:

Hearing Charlie Haden, or is it a European imitation?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm diciassette:

G'day mates! My head's been in the spaghetti code. How did it get so late on a Friday without music and beer? I will fix.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm doctorjazz:

Always really liked Bing Crosby's voice. Nice relaxed presentation.
  7:51pm Listener Gregory:

Even Bing can’t rescue this one.
Avatar 🎭 7:53pm Listener Gregory:

Answer: It was Marc Lalonde, not Haden. Never heard of him! @doctorj?
  7:55pm ?:

As I recall, Alvino Rey and his "singing" pedal steel guitar was a regular feature on the King Sisters show
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Bugs Bunny does a good cover of It's Magic..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm adamdoesit:

Carrots are divine, they're a dozen for a dime, it's maaaaagic…

Hello Bronwyn B and show-tune lovers!
Avatar 🎭 7:58pm Listener Gregory:

I think that "It's Magic" has fallen into obscurity (except for Bugs, of course). The only exception I know is a great performance by Eric Dolphy. www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:01pm doctorjazz:

Hey, LG, I wasn't sure which bass player you were referring to (been doing office work I've been stalling all day while listening).
But, to answer the question, don't know Marc Lalonde either. I Googled quickly, not tons of info there either; he does seem to be a Canadian bassist, but not much written about him (there's also a Canadian politician by the same name).
That's a great Dolphy track-don't think I connected it with the original tune when I heard Dolphy's, nice to put them together.
Avatar 8:02pm HyperDose:

Good evening, theatrical ones!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm adamdoesit:

This set's in the Cahn.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Bronwyn and B hive.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Webhamster Henry:

I approve corny-ass radio dialog!
Avatar 🎭 8:11pm Listener Gregory:

I just saw the early Kurosawa film "Ikuru." The characters suddenly break out into song at one point, without subtitles. After a while, it occurred to me that these Japanese people were singing Rosemary Clooney's hit, "Come on-a my house"... in English! Very strange. It isn't a musical, by any means. The characters were doing this as part of the action.
Avatar 8:15pm David in California:

I thought "That's a Moray" was from a wildlife documentary about eels.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm doctorjazz:

Where's Dino?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm adamdoesit:

When you swim and you feel like a big slimy eel…
  8:16pm Listener Gregory:

I remember That’s Amore from my childhood. Huge hit! Dean Martin did a good job with it, IMHO.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm doctorjazz:

Dino always sang everything sounding a bit soused...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Dano59:

I'm listening ... just a little out of it RN .. food coma I think
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Webhamster Henry:

WFMU DJ Citizen Kafka did a parody based on the Three Mile Island incident called "It's A Meltdown". Catch it and lots more on this Shulcoth Tribute show from Irene. www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Dano59:

Or a precept or code you live by on life's road ... that's a more. (Moxy Fruvous)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Dano59:

When you can't even feel you've been stung by an eel ...
Avatar 8:27pm David in California:

When you've lived since you're birth near a small Scottish firth, that's a Moray.
  8:29pm Listener Gregory:

This is a nice version of Chicago, before the schtick began to take it over.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm doctorjazz:

I've never quite gotten the love Sinatra gets from many, to me he sounds limited in range, nothing particularly striking in vocal timbre, his vaunted timing doesn't do much for me. (this gets me hate comments sometimes).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm adamdoesit:

When your isle's the stiff feet of a glacial ice sheet, that's a moraine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Dano59:

In the Wee Small Hours and his other drunken bummer concept albums are pretty great, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Dano59:

Who's that short funny guy hanging with Dick Van Dyke? That's a-Morey
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Webhamster Henry:

Nashville is one of my Favorites!
  8:33pm Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, I will overlook that post!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm doctorjazz:

See-it always gets me in trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Dano59:

Nashville is truly great. Much love to Karen Black, Christina Raines, Gwen Welles, Barbara Harris, Allen Goorwitz ...and Gary Busey (who wrote one of the songs when he was originally cast as Tom)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:35pm WR:

Ms. B, your commentary on this episode is tip top.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm adamdoesit:

What's a sauce that will please folded in mac and cheese? That's a Mornay!

Love Nashville, and this scene where KC sings this tune to Lily Tomlin is indelible.
  8:35pm Listener Gregory:

When a campfire has a snacker, marshmallow and graham cracker, that’s a s’more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Dano59:

So far this validates the Oscars' predilection for schmaltz and MOR. Not that there's anything wrong with either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@WR: aww thank you!!
Avatar 8:36pm HyperDose:

adamdoesit you genius
  8:36pm Listener Gregory:

I think Keith C won for that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Dano59:

it's totally a campfire song now, @listener gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Dano59:

I take back what I said. I'm a total sucker for this song (from an awful movie)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm doctorjazz:

@LG, great lyric (even makes up for the earlier comment).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:37pm doctorjazz:

Get up and dance!!!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm doctorjazz:

Adam, yours is also great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm adamdoesit:

Yours too, doc. Bring that sugo now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Dano59:

these alternate "Amore" lyrics are being forwarded to the Girl Scout Songbook people

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Dano59:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm adamdoesit:

When your ear has an itch scratched by Lionel Rich', 'ats amore!
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm doctorjazz:

@Dano59, I don't think you want to know (unless you're obsessing over DA converters, high end CD/SACD players, in ear headphones...)
  8:43pm Listener Gregory:

Good trivia category: Which songs from Bond films won Oscars? I can think of a few (maybe incorrectly).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Dano59:

no, not those doc ... kinda old-school. I bought a Harmon Kardon cassette deck last year and still looking for decent-quality & affordable Koss headphones. A MiniDisc deck, maybe ... RN I need to have my Marantz receiver refurbished
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Dano59:

my CD/video equipment could use an update, but not a priority
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm adamdoesit:

LG, idk, but my personal favorites are: Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, and We Have All the Time in the World.
Avatar 8:48pm HyperDose:

I remember this song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Dano59:

All good ones, @adam ... all second to You Only Live Twice for me tho
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm doctorjazz:

I always liked the Koss PortaPro, inexpensive, good sound (the Koss Electrostatic headphones, ESP-950, are great (but list at $999, but I have seen them in the $3-400 range).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm adamdoesit:

Dano, that's a (atsa?) good one, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Dano59:

Bonds: 7 were nominated, only 3 more recent ones have won including Skyfall (Adele).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Dano59:

.... Pigs! (Watch Closely Now ...)
Avatar 🎭 8:52pm Listener Gregory:

@adamdoesit, Didn't You Only Live Twice maybe win? And the Sheryl Crowe song, I think.
Oops, @Dano has ruled out Goldfinger??? What a great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Dano59:

thx for the tip, doc
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm doctorjazz:

You Only Live Twice, Goldfinger, Live and Let Die are the ones I remember.

Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm doctorjazz:

Great show, BB, thanks!!!
Avatar 🎭 8:55pm Listener Gregory:

Sheryl Crow's song was a hit, but not nominated, I find. (It was for a Golden Globe.)
I know that version, @doctorj! Very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm adamdoesit:
