Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

This song is so clever.

Bronwyn Bishop:

Apparently Sondheim himself didn't like the lyrics about books...which is silly of him

Wow, a director! Things are moving along!
I'm doing okay, went back in the office for two days this week and there was a fun party so we could get acquainted again.

Whenever I see the name Len Cariou, I always think “caribou.” I can’t help it.

@Lizzie: We have also been back in the office two days a week!!! I just came from the office! I used to really want a fully remote job and now I just want to be in the office all the time lol

@Henry: At first I thought you were referring to the book as the SS Finishing the Hat and I was like, I would totally go on a cruise on the SS Finishing the Hat

Hi WR and doctorjazz :D

Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Bronwyn I missed being in the office a lot! Everybody was so happy to see each other. I work with people all over the place so doing everything with Zoom or Meet wasn't a big adjustment like it was for some of my friends.
Avatar 7:35pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I'm an executive assistant so it was a crazy adjustment for me haha. So nice to not be trapped at home anymore

This is pretty-got to see Fred Hersch once, he's great!

Those Pablo records were known to be well recorded/good sounding, and usually sold for a dollar more (which sometimes made me pause and pass, $8 instead of $7. ahhh...

The Goodman quartet was one of the greatest groups in jazz history. Seems that there are horns added to this performance. Always exciting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

according to Wikepedia, Avalon rose to #2 on the charts in 1921, for those of you keeping score...

Dean:

I picked up a multi-LP set of Sarah Vaughan Pablo recordings many years ago when Tower was shutting down its jazz inventory, pennies on the dollar. An amazing set of recordings!
  8:29pm
Listener Gregory:

Avalon was one of those swing standards that is never played now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
doctorjazz:

That's funny, Dean, Tower in NYC had a bargain outlet down the block from the main store. I got a 3 box set of Sarah Vaughan The Complete Sarah Vaughan on Mercury there, also on the cheap.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

WH, I spent many hours in that Annex, back in the day...
  8:35pm
Dean:

Once upon a time my Tower purchases would be mis-priced in my favor EVERY time I shopped there. I felt bad about it for about two seconds.

"Tower Records Annex" to me means the classical music annex on Sunset Blvd. I spent quality time there, and I miss it to this day.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
TonyR:

The Philly Tower annex was where they sold premium blank VHS tapes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
doctorjazz:

I did get to see Robert Goulet in a revival of Camelot, but he was older, and played King Arthur in the version we saw.
  8:41pm
Listener Gregory:

I would guess that having Elton John do your demo would increase its probability of success considerably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Webhamster Henry:

This actually sounds a lot better than Elton John.
  8:42pm
Listener Gregory:

I took a job in NYC in part because it was two blocks from Tower Records and Other Music. Imagine my feelings when both closed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
doctorjazz:

@Dean, The NYC Tower Annex did have a ton of classical records, maybe mostly classical records, but other genres made it there as well
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm

It was a constant challenge, @doctorj. And then someone told me about the Downtown Music Gallery, which was just a few blocks away then… There went my retirement fund!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
doctorjazz:

@LG, I still have that Sunflare tab open on Bandcamp (but at least it's name your own price...)
  8:47pm
Dean:

The arrangement in LA on Sunset was a major outpost of Tower Records to the north across the street from Puck's Spago, and the classical annex, which was purely classical, directly to the south. I met Cheap Trick and the Ramones at the latter, Andy Summers at the former.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I walked past a huge used bookstore in San Francisco on my way home, for 23 years.... or why my house is filled with boxes of books and I'm broke. But happy.
  8:48pm

How did we get here from Elton John?
@doctorj, I bought it. Tab closed!

^Er, vice versa. Cheap Trick and Ramones at Tower proper, Andy Summers at the classical annex.
