	🎸 ♥ 6:05pm Austin Rich: As I sort of referenced in the chat last week, this show is airing three days after Thanksgiving. (Sunday Night.) Chances are it's been a long weekend, with the family, and you're settling in to listen to a radio story... And it's a boxing tale.
	6:05pm Mr Fab: Yep, the draft was a fact for American men. i can't imagine the terror of spending two years in the military. I guess men of that generation would have called me "yellow."
	🎸 ♥ 6:06pm Austin Rich: My grandfather was a teacher, and somehow talked his was into being a radio operator, instead of having to see combat. Still, he hated the war. I'm sure he wasn't alone.
	🎸 ♥ 6:08pm Austin Rich: Anyone who has seen, "Barton Fink," knows that, while never mainstream, there was an audience for "Boxing Pictures." And, of course, this bled over into radio, too. I've heard a number of shows who have done a boxing story, eventually. I think that's just one of the story tropes that was common at the time.

Still, I was never interested, and never ran the risk of really being drafted. That was certainly different that the generations previous to me.
	6:11pm Mr Fab: Boxing was one of most popular sports in America at the time, along with horse racing. They dwarfed football, basketball and hockey at the time.

	🎸 ♥ 6:32pm Austin Rich: Thanks @Charles! While I'm editing the shows, I usually script out the commercials (roughly, in some cases) based on some of the content from the show. (Sometimes not; sometimes based on commercials I hear on commercial radio / podcasts that I want to parody.) I usually write them off the top of my head, and then revise as I read back through them later. I try to make them a little stilted - like old commercials used to be. I've done a lot of "commercials" over the years, probably most well known in "The Adventures of Marcus Little." marcuslittleadventures.com

But I like the way the star's voice often jumps into a higher register at that point. It'd be something most actors would probably try to avoid, but it's his trademark. Not this time, though.

	7:10pm Listener Robert: The decline in spectator and gambling popularity of boxing seems to have been a major factor in making room for pro football. Some think the causality ran the other way. Pro basketball may have benefited as well.
	7:12pm Listener Robert: I'm interested in the trends over time in popularity of both participant and spectator sports.
	7:16pm Mr Fab: Robert, i read somewhere that horse racing was the most popular sport in America until TV. The horse tracks thought that no one would come to to the races if they could watch 'em on tv, thus allowing the sports that were televised to gain popularity, and spending "a day at the races" fell.
	7:21pm Listener Robert: The tracks in the USA (except for Nevada) also had a legal monopoly on the betting thereon, and opposed the opening of legal off-track betting parlors. And yes, by some measures they may have been the most popular spectator sport. There are so many ways to measure, though -- and that's even if you limit it to SPECTATOR popularity. Supposedly the bowling alleys claim bowling to still be the most popular participant sport, but there are many ways to measure that too.

	7:27pm Listener Robert: To your point of a while ago, I think the reason superhero radio shows weren't more popular is that without the visuals, they were just detective shows -- of which there were already plenty.

The Shadow - which was really almost a crime / horror show more than a superhero show - is probably the main exception. I think once comics really became super popular in the 40's, the superhero stories on the radio in the 30's and 40's just couldn't compete.

	🎸 ♥ 7:33pm Austin Rich: I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this, but at this stage in the run of Dimension X, Wheaties was the sponsor. If you cut out the sponsor breaks, Dimension X is a LOT shorter.

I remember really loving that episode of Over The Edge, and I've been afraid to sample this episode for that very reason. I can't compete with Don.

	🎸 ♥ 7:37pm Austin Rich: This was just after a number of new rules had been put in place, so that stations had to space themselves out, so the signals wouldn't interfere with the signals of other stations. Big fines were being issues for anyone who would try to broadcast on bandwidths that other stations were already broadcasting on. This show was probably reinforcing those rules. And the writers - old radio writers - would be familiar with the FCC's new rules being passed out.

	7:16pm Mr Fab: Robert, i read somewhere that horse racing was the most popular sport in America until TV. The horse tracks thought that no one would come to to the races if they could watch 'em on tv, thus allowing the sports that were televised to gain popularity, and spending "a day at the races" fell.
	7:21pm Listener Robert: The tracks in the USA (except for Nevada) also had a legal monopoly on the betting thereon, and opposed the opening of legal off-track betting parlors. And yes, by some measures they may have been the most popular spectator sport. There are so many ways to measure, though -- and that's even if you limit it to SPECTATOR popularity. Supposedly the bowling alleys claim bowling to still be the most popular participant sport, but there are many ways to measure that too.
	7:23pm Listener Robert: For a long time fishing was said to be the most popular. I don't know if that was nationwide or world.

The Shadow - which was really almost a crime / horror show more than a superhero show - is probably the main exception. I think once comics really became super popular in the 40's, the superhero stories on the radio in the 30's and 40's just couldn't compete.

I remember really loving that episode of Over The Edge, and I've been afraid to sample this episode for that very reason. I can't compete with Don.

	🎸 ♥ 7:37pm Austin Rich: This was just after a number of new rules had been put in place, so that stations had to space themselves out, so the signals wouldn't interfere with the signals of other stations. Big fines were being issues for anyone who would try to broadcast on bandwidths that other stations were already broadcasting on. This show was probably reinforcing those rules. And the writers - old radio writers - would be familiar with the FCC's new rules being passed out.
