Yeah, those crystal balls go out of spec very easily if you don't keep them up.

Austin Rich:

Dan always finds a way to describe the women in a way that seems like he's gonna hit on them, but so far in the show he's actually been pretty kind, and is rarely demeaning. In fact, he almost never actually hooks up with the women. He's pretty chaste, in a lot of ways. (He can't handle his "sodas," and he rarely drinks or smokes.) I wonder if this was because of Alan Ladd's preferences, or something else?

Listener Robert:

My friend here hears me laughing a lot at the self-referential humor there, and says, "You are easily amused."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Austin Rich:

I like the idea that everyone around Dan knows what's up by him. In a pre-Internet era, you could be blissfully unaware of a lot of things for a very long time.

I do love when Dan goes to the morgue to chat with Jonesey. In old stories, this is the equivalent of using the internet to google the answer to a question.

Mr Fab:

Hey Austin!

This show reminds me of old slang like, "What's the big idea?"
Which would then be a joke set-up, like:"Say, what's the idea of you guys painting in here?"
"Well, the idea of painting is to put paint on a brush and make the walls a different color"
"I know that! Why you, I oughta..!"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Austin Rich:

I do need to get on with my "Sheena's Comedy Noir" script for next Pledge Drive.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:17pm
Austin Rich:

Good Hello, Mr. Fab!
Avatar 6:18pm
Mr Fab:

"Sheena's Comedy Noir"? Heck yeah!

Everyone's mission for this week: if you get angry at someone, say: "Why you, I oughta..!"
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:18pm
Austin Rich:

"Your Box 13 Routine" might have to be the name of the script.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
Austin Rich:

I've been mulling over some silly script that we could all do live, where it's just a bunch of silly noir jokes and tropes, about us looking for the "big payoff." (Pledge Drive Donations.) Still fleshing it out in my head.

What a twist!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Austin Rich:

I listen to so many of these shows, I can every quite remember how any of them actually end. They're all sort of jumbled up in my head. So the endings are often still a surprise to me, all these years later.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:28pm

Suzy insists on taking a Selfie!
  6:30pm
SW:

That one started slow but got interesting
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Austin Rich:

I might have mentioned this, but the lengths of these shows vary tremendously, depending on the ad breaks and other stuff that they would throw into them. So this week I have to run a little more music than normal.
Avatar 6:33pm
Mr Fab:

more music is fine - gives Holiday and Suzie a chance to, as they used to say, cut a rug
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:34pm
Austin Rich:

Sort of given away by the title, but a certain character returns this episode.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

Not the worst sound this week. I still did a tiny bit of EQ, as all of them have strange sound qualities. (Mostly: the source files have very low signals, and the sound is just quiet.) I've tried to boost it without too much distortion, when possible.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Austin Rich:

I'm thinking about taking all of my "fixed" versions, and posting them for download on archive.org. All the versions up there have sound issues of one kind or another. (And some files are mis-labeled, etc.)
Avatar 6:44pm
Mr Fab:

that would be a great service. Have you ever used archive.org? It's very easy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:44pm
Austin Rich:

The show really goes out of it's way (just like last time) to sort of "code" Ah Sin as queer. (He's "mincing" and wearing perfume.) But given the homoerotic tension between Red and Phil anyway, it sort of only emphasizes that there's probably a safe queer spaces for these sailors.

Sorry. Went into "College Paper" mode.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Austin Rich:

I do use archvie.org! It's where I've been storing all my podcasts / radio shows / other media for a while now. Been trying to digitize all the old stuff, too, as that place is a good place to store things.
Avatar 6:47pm
Mr Fab:

'twas gettin pretty steamy there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Austin Rich:

Phil seems very worried about Red right now, and was ready to ditch her in a second.
  6:48pm
Listener Robert:

Like how the text of "The Maltese Falcon" just says, "This one's queer," while the movie had to incorporate a bunch of cliches -- which the book did as well, anyway!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Austin Rich:

"The Maltese Falcon" is such a weird book. I've got a couple papers about it lying around the lounge here somewhere.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:49pm
Austin Rich:

(I love it. But it's totally strange.)

Wow, Bill Conrad and Paul Frees!
Avatar 7:00pm

The Scarlet Queen writers really knew their Indonesian geography, or faked it really well.
  7:03pm
SW:

Yay!
  7:04pm
Listener Robert:

What's so great about William Conrad and Paul Frees is that I didn't recognize them until the credits! Paul Frees especially could be anybody, and Conrad was versatile too.
  7:05pm
SW:

Sounds cool
  7:08pm
Listener Robert:

Come to think of it, I had a couple filing cabinets with folders with stuff I'd researched or was keeping up with. Couldn't take it with me when I moved, though.
  7:09pm

Listener Robert: Among all the other voices he did, Mr. Frees he also voiced John and George on the short lived Beatles cartoons.

Yeah, Mr. Frees career is pretty impressive. He's all over the place. He worked for Disney, so there's a TON of their stuff with his voice all over it.

It's late here and Chandu makes me sleepy 😴 Cool show again Austin! Night all!

Making stuff disappear and then reappear in an orange is still a popular trick.
  7:25pm
Listener Robert:

There are videos online on how to do it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:26pm
Austin Rich:

I feel like Penn & Teller have a version of that trick.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:30pm

Those papers are becoming a bit of a McGuffin for this show.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:34pm

"I sure could use a good broom."

Oh, you're a spy. Uhm... so... do you have brooms anyway? I really need one.
  7:41pm
Listener Robert:

Why not shrink the operators as well as the weapons?
  7:41pm
Listener Robert:

Oh...sounds like they've thought of that.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Austin Rich:

I think that was their way of answering that plot hole.
  7:43pm
Listener Robert:

Not very secret if they're blowing whistles and sirens.

i missed your intro, Austin. Who is Villiers Gerson? Never heard of him.

You don’t have to shut off the machine. Just turn off the goddamn beeping.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

Not a lot is known about Villiers Gerson. I was gonna do some deep dive researching, but I ran out of time. But nothing is easy to find, anyway.
Avatar 7:51pm

i bet their names are Adam and Eve

Nearing the end of the show. Don't forget to weigh in if you want to hear my 90 minute scripted "Supernatural Radio Noir" on Dimestore Radio Theater someday. (Featuring guest cast The Weatherman and Little Fyodor!) Titled: The Adventures of Marcus Little: Tall Tales & Small Rewards.
  7:54pm
egould:

Yes, Rich. I’d like to hear whatever radio wackyness you produce.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:54pm

This is sort of the other version of that story on The Simpsons, where Lisa grows a vat of small people, who live centuries in a short span.
