Historically, Ghost stories were associated with the holiday season. This episode aired December 12th, so it's possible the writers were thinking of that. But most likely, this was just another story they hadn't gotten to yet.

Regardless, Box 13 rarely acknowledged the holidays, so it is likely a coincidence. Still...

I think I mentioned this before, but "Voyage of the Scarlett Queen" has started to get more commercials as the show goes on, so I'm editing more and more out each week. Hopefully the music is better than the commercials.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:31pm

@Mr. Fab: I mean, Spellbound is really good. It's hard to top that, so maybe people stopped trying?

Avatar 6:32pm
Mr Fab:

Yeah, I saw a cool exhibit at the LA County Museum of Art dedicated to Dali's time in Hollywood. Lots of his work from "Spellbound" on display.

I wish they'd made a movie out of "The Haunted Artist". They could have had party scenes with all those colorful "bohemians."

It's funny to think that a lot of "30 Minute shows" in those days were actually close to 30 minutes long. The average show that is "a half hour" long is now 22 minutes of show, and at least 8 minutes of commercials. Even at almost 25 and a half minutes long, it's funny that that is a "short" episode of Scarlett Queen.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: I agree. it would be fun to see some of these stories as short movies, as they do find ways to depict the seedier side of culture, back then.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm
Austin Rich:

I'll mention it, since I do every week: The sound is pretty good this week, but I did do a little EQ and whatnot, to clean things up a little. Still, I did less that I often do, as this one was pretty good.
  6:37pm
Charles:

I can't make out what he's shouting in the intro. Something "make sails"?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Austin Rich:

Something like that, Charles. I'm not entirely sure, but really, only the crew need to know what he's saying. We just need to know, "That's the call that starts the show!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm
Scott67:

Hit the deck!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Austin Rich:

While this has been mentioned before, it rarely comes up as a plot mechanic, so it seems worth mentioning: the Scarlett Queen has both a motor and sails to assist it when coming into land. (It's like the difference between "Warp Speed" and "Impulse Speed.")

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Austin Rich:

The more I think about the "asian voices" on this show, I have considered something that I think was absolutely important at the time.

Yes, the voices were most likely done by a white person. But there are so many different asian characters on this show, I can't help but wonder if this was appealing to the Asian American audience that lived in the US in those days. While there are many offensive elements to the portrayals, I imagine you probably didn't hear many Asian voices on the radio at all in 1947. (In the wake of WWII, where most Americans were fairly racist against the Japanese, and often confused all "asians" as Japanese.

The characterizations could be a lot better, certainly. But having any representation on this show must have meant something to people who only heard white voices, for the most part.
Avatar 6:51pm
Mr Fab:

I"m sure you're right about that. Magazines like "Jet" used to have a list of every appearance of any black folks on TV for that week or month, and I'm sure some of those portrayals weren't too cool. But black families would still plan their week around it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: I was thinking about that analogy! Still, I wince when I hear those white people doing foreign accents. It's like when I see Neil Innes do blackface: I love you buddy, but... wow.
  6:53pm
Charles:

I like how Phil narrates action scenes in this sped-up agitated way. That's usually how I read moments like these in books.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:07pm

Yeah, I think all of October will just be horror shows on Dimestore. We'll take a little break until Thanksgiving, and then we'll probably follow the holidays from there on out.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:08pm
Austin Rich:

I might do a voice, hosting the Halloween shows. Still thinking that over...
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:11pm
Austin Rich:

In those days, being "On Contract" meant you didn't make movies for other studios, unless they "loaned you out." So getting a studio contract in those days was important.

Since then, actors mostly sign contracts for one film, possible a multi-picture deal. But unless you're a Disney Brat, you don't usually sign with a studio anymore.

Charles:

Since it was daily I'm guessing Chandu will be the longest running show of the four current ones?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:21pm
Austin Rich:

I think I've mentioned this before, but the "titles" for the episodes of Chandu The Magician are sort of guesswork by fans. Often, whoever has collected the episodes names them after what happens in the episode (sometimes spoiling the plot). I'm tried to stick with the titles from the original archive.org download that I found online, but I've seen other titles listed here and there online, and they are often very different.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:23pm
Austin Rich:

Yes, @Charles. Chandu should last a few years, at least. I haven't done the math precisely, but I think it'll go for a long time, so that "Dimestore Revelations" has an open slot in the line-up.

However, if Chandu reaches a natural "conclusion" to the main storylines a little early, I might switch it out before all the episodes are aired. There are a lot of 15 minutes radio serials, and it might be fun to explore some of the superhero shorts from that era. (Which are a lot different from the kinds of superhero stories you get now.)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:29pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah, just did the math. There's just under four years of Chandu, at this current pace. But like I said, I'll probably look for an early out. I can always come back to it.
  7:31pm
Charles:

Well, there's always a place for Chandu in my home.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Austin Rich:

I'm digging it, and do want to play them all. But I'll probably get impatient for that Blue Beetle serial, which didn't last long, but would be fun for a lot of reasons.
Avatar 7:33pm
Mr Fab:

four years!

I wonder if they recorded them all in big batches. Or they would have to go down to the studio just for 15 minutes every day. Probably, they didn't record many things in advance, did they?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:33pm
Austin Rich:

I've run this story before, as a "Halloween" story, with music intercut between the story beats to "lengthen" the show. (I've done that on this show quite a bit already.)
Avatar 7:34pm
HyperDose:

I don't think cigarettes are supposed to do that
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Austin Rich:

@Mr. Fab: I think, as I understand it, they would record them on transcription discs, and send them out. (And considering they had "live" music by Korla, I suspect that they could only have access to him so many hours a day.) However, I could be wrong. Maybe it was live, every day?

My guess, it, pre-recorded to transcription disc, to send it out to other stations.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 7:35pm
Austin Rich:

So, they probably recorded a week's worth of shows all at once.
