adamdoesit:

doc, I went last night, both sets, both very pleasurable. Dedications to a victim of Sandy Hook, to Ralph Peterson Jr., and to Jonathan Blake's dad. Bags' Groove as a feature for the excellent young vibes player, and a Monk-tribute original feature for the pianist. A lot of hard, heartfelt blowing over group ostinatos, and a couple of vignettes played straight through with no improvisation. Warm humor and waves of percussion. A great feeling to be back there after so long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am

Great to hear, Adamdoesit, I mentioned the other day, I saw his band pre-pandemic in the same venue, he puts together great groups. Glad you enjoyed! Nice to be out in the world again, no? (though not 100% worry free, but we gotta live, amirite?)

Just recently I saw the conclusion of the series since the initial broadcast. It was filmed at Pacific Ocean Park in Venice. Something that past me by the first time around. P.O.P became something of a hang when I was in high school when it was a deserted pile falling into the ocean.
  12:30pm
Gerry from Miami:

With regard to my comment on Steve Katz being a member of BS&T, I didn't mean to slight the great Al Kooper, credited with the founding of that group after he left the Blues Project. Koopee is another in the long list of rock greats who have been snubbed by Jann Wenner's R&R Hall of Fame.
  12:34pm

Bernard Hermann, a superb film composer. Didn't Hitchcock hire him to score "Psycho" as well?

Remember watching The Fugitive when it was running with the family.

Listening to music on YouTube is like looking at masterpieces of painting as low-rez JPEGS. The availability truly democratizes it all for everyone (with computer access) I guess, but it's like cardboard chips for all, everyone is fed.

@doctorjazz: I had the impression that Katz basically led a mutiny against Kooper (hence the second half of the title of his memoir).

Gerry from Miami:

BOB, "Shazam!" is my favorite Move album, bought as an import. Later, while signed to U.S. Capitol Records, "Message from the Country" joined the earlier LP as my favorite. The Move is a band that American radio never gave a fair chance. Just like Family and Gentle Giant.

Hi Frank, someone else mentioned Hunter. He's a bit later, and, not to quibble, but I don't think he was considered a member of the band which had other lyricists...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm

(I don't recall the timing of Hunter and the Dead, but he was generally the lyricist for Garcia, and not actually a member of GD. He did perform on his own, I believe).

@doctorjazz. No time wasted when tuned into Bob Brainen! I actually have this 3 hours slated into my Saturday activity cakendar.. Other things can wait! I am not an FMU archive freak yet. But if I start, I may never be able to escape! LOL!

doctorjazz:

Gerry, that's a problem, I do go to the archives sometimes, but you can just live your life there...not that that would be so terrible, but have to get to other things (if only albums purchased after hearing them on FMU-no chance to get to them if you're on the Stream, The Archives, etc...)

Not plain Deluxe, but SUPER DELUXE, thank goodness, I'd be crushed if I were just stuck with the Deluxe...

Quibble away, Bob! That's what this board is for, right? I certainly know that Hunter did not write all the lyrics.
I know that Hunter shows up on the cover of Workingman's Dead(well after PC of course). But I guess I don't know if that means he was an official member of the band.

This particular Beach Boys deluxe retrospective has been especially rewarding. Keep 'em comin'!

IMHO, the '69 version of All I Ever Wanted is THE version. Esp. Garcia's pedal steel work.

it's nice to hear NRPS song other than Panama Red.

Anybody here a fan of Old and in the Way?
Avatar 1:10pm
Bob Brainen:

Wm, this one's def. growing on me, but it's missing the backing vocals that add a lot. it's less fully formed. There are no right or wrong answers, of course.

Digging the show, BB!

With this music, I expect Charlie Chaplin to get into one of his pickles.

*That's PH = Procoul Harum.
I wonder how you document being an official member of a band. Is it on your W2 form?
@Gerry: Old and in the Way is my favorite bluegrass album.

Pretty good sound on this James P. Johnson (as heard through the digital streaming pipes), good remaster sounds like to me.

Bob, agreed. I dig the other version as well.

Old and In The Way is a great albumfor sure, Frank (I'm headed that way, hopefully not in the way yet...)

Me, I'm proud to be in the way.

Gerry from Miami:

@Frank Zaatar. Actually, Procol Harum misspelled the Latin word "procul," which means "far off" or "way beyond." "Harum" is the genitive(or is it dative?) plural of "these things." FOOTNOTE---There is a word "proculsexual," that means having a desire to have a relationship with someone unattainable, like a celebrity or entertainment star. Class dismissed!

A double Q treat!
Thanks!

@Gerry
Proculsexual should be the name of a tribute band

There was a Nick Drake song used in this last episode of Young Sheldon.

A perfect pop song. Oh, Laura. I hate ovarian cancer.

The title tune from Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" album was featured in a 1999 Volkswagen Cabriolet commercial. Really cool.

@Gerry: I remember hearing about this philological howler back in the day. Another reason I should have learned Latin.
